Pasar Semawis, also known as Pasar Malam Semawis or Waroeng Semawis, is a night market that sells a variety of Semarang's specialty foods and souvenirs. This market is only available every weekend and is located in the Pecinan area of Semarang City, specifically along Gang Warung Street.
This culinary hub is the result of an initiative by Kopi Semawis, a community dedicated to revitalizing the old town area of Semarang. Pecinan is a place where Chinese culture and modern Semarang coexist harmoniously. Pasar Semawis first appeared with the celebration of Pasar Imlek Semawis in 2005, coinciding with the recognition of Chinese New Year as a national holiday in Indonesia.
Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, dozens of stalls stand along a stretch of about 300 meters on Gang Warung Street, equipped with tables and chairs for dining. Visitors can find a variety of Semarang's cuisine and snacks such as soto, tahu gimbal, nasi ayam, lumpia, pisang plenet, es puter, kue serabi, bubur kacang, and various steamboat dishes. This is the longest snack market in Semarang and operates from 6 PM until midnight.
During Waroeng Semawis, several streets in the Pecinan area, such as Gang Besen, Gang Tengah, Gambiran, Gang Belakang, and Gang Baru, are closed at one end to provide parking space for Pasar Semawis visitors.
There are several routes that can be taken to reach Gang Warung, where Pasar Semawis is held. Visitors can go through Gajahmada Street, enter via Wotgandul Barat - Plampitan - Kranggan - and park on Beteng Street. Another alternative is through Pasar Johar or Jurnatan, entering via Pekojan Street, and parking on Gang Pinggir Street.
