This video is a miracle!😂 I'm visiting Istanbul next Friday for the first time in my life. Can't wait to experience the city through my lens. Thanks, Roman 👌 Edit (end of June 2022): I can't thank you enough, Roman! My Trip to Istanbul was amazing, and your suggestions definitely were on of the reasons. My personal Highlight was shooting the sunset on the Princes Island (Heybeliada & Büyükada) and ofc. the food ;). I agree with everything in this video (also listen carefully to the "general tips" part). I would suggest: 1. to plan at least 5 days to experience Istanbul, each additional day would make everything more relaxed, obviously. 2. learn some Turkish, it definitely lets you connect better with the locals and in my case lead to better pictures on the streets of Istanbul.
As a local, and an amateur photographer, and an urban planner, I would like to express my gratitude to you on how well and balanced you have represented the city. Great captures as well. I have to warn people, though, that most places change in every 3-5 years so you may need to find new cafes and places. Roman if you ever visit again, you have a free coffee from me :) Personally I believe north of the city also requires a special day or two. Best regards.
I was there in 2020 for a few months for my wife to deliver our first baby and frequently pass through once or twice a year. I was shocked this year when I ordered yemeksepeti to our Airbnb how expensive everything has gotten in your city. I hope your inflation issues are solved soon.
Enjoyed the video. Visited Istanbul in March for 5 nights. Probably needed twice as long to cover more of the city, e.g. the islands you mention, but 5 nights was a good taster. Certainly felt like I was on the edge of Europe and heading into the east. (GR3)
I wish I discovered your channel earlier. I am a street/city photographer from Istanbul. I could show you many unknown spots and we could hang out and take photos. Maybe next time. Great video btw. You pretty much nailed everything.
Well done!! I lived in Istanbul / Bebek late 80s for Uni. It was so nice to see my old stomping grounds captured so nicely. Seems like you’ve had a good time, and especially you were able to spend more than just a few days. As you’ve found out, Istanbul is very large and very rich in its offerings to a photographer.
I used to live there and you did a great job capturing its charm and beauty. An additional suggestion: take the local ferries up to the many neighborhoods and villages up the Bosporus, especially between the first and second suspension bridges and beyond. Evenings and weekends you’ll see many Istanbullis strolling along the waterside promenades. Fantastic for fresh air, exercise and people watching all at once.
Good review of your Istanbul journey? I remember Istanbul, I was there many years ago before the Gulf war. It is very much as you described it in the video. I travelled to the south of Turkey all the way to Adana, and Izmir and back to Istanbul. I noticed then that very young kids liked to smoke Marlboro cigarettes and people smoked heavily in the bus travelling from one city to another that I had to request to have the vents opened. It was a great memorable time. Than you for the video it brought back some memories. Cheers.
Thank you much Roman for sharing this!. I'm going to Istanbul in one week with my X100V and the wide adapter, after I decided to go light on photo gear.
What a great and perfect video, I will send it to those who always ask me about the most beautiful places in Istanbul to relax a little from them lol. thank you for making this. for the question at the end of the video well I'm not from Istanbul but I live here as a student, I use my Fuji xs10 to document so many things it's an amazing camera, its been with me for 6 or 8 months now. I've a year left to be a graduate student, So I have to go outside and take pictures on all the holidays that pass me by I have an album with more than 4K photos of this great historical city.
I downloaded the Istanbul Zine and want to thank you for such a great collection of truly inspiring photos. Istanbul never ceases to amaze me and I can't wait to return. One of my favorite spots is at the Istanbul Archaeology Museums in the Old City. There is an outdoor sculpture garden with some great photo opportunities. There is a lot of ancient art worthy of creative photos inside the museum as well. I found the funerary sculpture from Palmyra particularly memorable. I hope you get a chance to return to Istanbul soon. Thanks again!
Thank You! It's everything I ever wanted in a RU-vid video. Great commentary and information to go along with the awesome pictures and videos. Can't wait to see more!!!
Great video Roman . Having been to Istanbul twice, I reckon you have covered many of the locations I enjoyed. I agree that the ferries are a great place to get shots and move around especially if you get an Istanbulkart as soon as you arrive. Another couple of locations to consider are Miniaturk and Pierre Loti in Eyup but there are so many. I'm spending a month there in Sept/Oct to update my albums and don't believe that I will ever tire of the place, people and food.
Good video! Got to Istanbul this morning. Fabulous street photography here. Wish I could stay more than the 3 days in my schedule. Appreciate your tips!
Such a wonderful and heart warming video from my home town Istanbul.. Thank you very much for your afford and time to taking these amazing photos and videos and not least preparing this video. I totally agree your advice about having light photo gear, while walking in Istanbul. I have used Fujifilm cameras for a couple of years until I decided switching to full frame Sony system. I mostly travel with my Sony RX1RMK2 or Sony A7C with 24 + 40mm primes, which weighs only about 165 grams each.
This is one of the best videos i have watched about Istanbul and photography walk. I have visited Istanbul 2 times and really liked the place. Good to see this video and reliving memories. Your photography and presentation style is awesome... Keep up the good work.
Thank you for this video! I am going to Turkey next month and this answered all my Istanbul questions regarding places to go, photography and food! Thank you, Roman!
I just enjoyed this so much! Thank you for creating content like this- it’s a super refreshing take on photography and travel and makes me want to do more of both. Awesome job!
Great video - my current favourite is the 27mm pancake lens and a close second is the 16-80mm for scouting and family shots. keep up the great work loving the pics
I'm an amateur photographer, and I lived in Istanbul for a couple of years and now living in the US. The last time I visited there was 4 years ago. I realized how much I missed the city and the culture. Hopefully, I'll visit in late September this year. Thanks for the inspiration, Roman. I'm looking forward to getting lost in the city.
Thank you so much Roman ! I'm in Istanbul and this video is a blessing. I will also buy your book obviously to support your work. I will actually shoot the sunrise tomorrow morning (23th of June) at 5am and do a big morning walk to shoot the Galata bridge and Balat - that said, if someone wants to join, you can reply here !! Thank you again Roman, your work is fantastic and still keeps me away from going back to Sony 😂 Cheers form Cağaloğlu 🙏
A great summary, well done Roman 👏 As a local of Istanbul, thank you for your time and effort 👍 Clearly there are plenty more to see and shoot in this thousands year old city but who has enough time eh :) There are very special spots hidden in both the Historic Peninsula and other parts of Turkey, the intersection of cultures. It is worth documenting really, why not a hard copy of "Through the Lens of" and also you might have a real good chance widen your diet btw, food for thought... Best
Thanks for posting this video. It is very informative and displays the wide variety of option for an Istanbul visit. I have been wanting to go, and this video will help convince my wife of the great trip it would be. I have watched quite a few of your videos and enjoy the mix of photography advice with the travel advice you include. Safe travels!
How incredible! I'll be visiting Istanbul by train (from Vienna) in July for two weeks (partly influenced by your videos). I was subliminally hoping you will make such a photo-travel-guide - and well, here it is! 😁
Awesome Video.. just what I wanted.... would have loved if you had specified certain locations / vantage points to shoot monuments from...esp in eve / night time ( blue hour )
i'm from istanbul and the amount of things i see normal which can have great potential for photography literally shook me, i should be more careful and open-minded when i'm going somewhere with my dslr!
This is a perfect guide for mo Roman!!! A ton of thanks to you~!! BTW I can't seem to find an area called Yavus Sinn near Balat... Does this market have another name?
We were in Istanbul about 10-12 years ago. So many places to go and see. Visited the touristy Basilica cistern where scenes from the James Bond movie From Russia with Love were filmed. While wandering on another day, got some simit (bread ring) from a street vendor. Yes, we were 'dragged' into a rug shop (had some time to kill) but did not buy anything, probably to the dismay of the owners.
Just arrived in Istanbul yesterday and already amazed. Started my trip with visit to Hagia Sofia and Blue mosque and your video today has given me so many more options over next two weeks. I think splitting visit to princess islands is great and I am gonna do this over two days ☺️👍. Also your zine is coming in so useful 😊
I went many times to Istanbul. I have good friends there. I missed Taksim Square, İstiklal Caddesi, the walls of Constantinople, Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, Golden horn, Bosphorus bridge and some other places
Amazing video and super helpful tips! Also would love to recommend Hafiz Mustafa place for delicious baklava. Definitely will visit Istanbul again. Thank you very much for the video!
Weird to say, but I have a feeling that after your journey I will know your mum pretty well. At least from photos where she poses. A bit too much for my taste but hey....
I wish I wasn't writing this but there are some wank stains out there trying to scam people by pretending to be me... please report any comment that is not from me. How do you know? I will not ask you for your telegram or WhatsApp. I will not message you to say you've won £100000 (sorry). If the comment seems to be off... it's because it is. Please use your common sense.
What a great video! Thanks to the author of the channel for this fascinating video! It is interesting to see how people live in other countries! It is very important to know foreign languages on such trips. I would like to recommend to all travelers a practical guide to learning foreign languages by Yuriy Ivantsiv "Polyglot Notes. Practical tips for learning foreign languages". This book contains a lot of useful tips on how to learn a foreign language for tourists, students, entrepreneurs and anyone who needs a foreign language in life. There are a lot of good tips on how to solve problems with the language from beginner to advanced level of language learning. It turns out that the traveler only needs to know a few dialogues and you can easily travel around the world! You don't have to spend a lot of time to fully learn a foreign language, you just need to learn what you can use when you travel. I wish everyone exciting travels!
