From a small town here in England, I just love looking at level crossings, peoples' houses, pickups --- in another small town in Virginia USA! This was a friendly "cosy" video Jaw Tooth. Oh yeah, did love the trains also! Great stuff pal!
Awesome catch Brian thanks, you reminded me when I used to live next to U P Line and a trash train got a red signal and stop. O M G did it stinked LOL the nice animals loved it but I was glad when the signal went green i was doing the can can dance lol
My grandfather was an REA agent in a small town. That wagon is so familiar to me. Morning and evening, we would wait for the train with wagon in tow. When she pulled in, we would quickly take the packages from the attendant and place them on the wagon, when that was done we would take them to the truck and deliver them around the town. Thank you for that memory.
If you ever go to Michigan, go to either Dowagiac, Lawton, or Decatur. They have high speed Amtrak trains that fly through there. There's also one in my home state IL and that down in Dwight or some other southern cities. That would be some awesome live action for you...woooo!!!
Back in 1987 when I was driving a semi-truck around the country. An Ohio, where I live, representative went public and stated he stopped railroads from bringing New York garbage into Ohio. What he didn't stop was semi-trucks from doing so. I was sent to Long Island New York to get loaded with the nastiest bales of garbage I'd ever seen. It was so bad it leaked nasty fluid out of the back of my trailer. It was so bad, I had to drop the trailer off on the off ramp from the freeway before I could go into a truck stop to refuel and get something to eat in the restaurant. After I dropped the garbage off at a landfill somewhere down by Zanesville, Ohio I had to go have my trailer pressure washed cleaned out and then sterilized. Even after having it sprayed out with a sterilizing chemical, it still stunk!
awizardalso, I live in Newark, Ohio and they used to bring the trash train through downtown. One weekend there was a food truck festival in the pavilion adjacent to the tracks where they had offloaded a long line of garbage cars onto a siding to be picked up by another train the following day. Everyone was complaining about the downtown smelling like a trash pit while they were standing in line at the trucks deciding what to eat. Numerous people left because the stench ruined their appetites.
@@norskviking9410 LOL! I know that pig farms stink real bad. After my years driving a semi-truck, I got a job driving a bus for Goodwill. Mostly like a school bus by picking up adults and kids with disabilities and dropping the kids off at a school for kids with disabilities and the adults at the Goodwill training center. Then in the afternoon picking them up and taking them back home. We also did a charter service. I took a large group of elderly people from a nursing home down to a farm where one of the employees lived. The farm had many pigs in a large pig pen. It was not pleasant. Many of the older men got to fish in a large pond but couldn't keep the fish and had to release them as the pond collected rain runoff from the pen. The women all put together a bunch of food for everyone.
Anyone who watches the Ashland live feed will know Kenny. He features on a few you tubers vids. Always polite and helpful, every town worth it's salt needs a Kenny.
The trash train was traveling pretty fast for a downtown area. Guess they wanted to get the stink thru fast! Love the mural on the side of the building!
AAAAHHHHH Yes Jaw tooth. We get those "Flowers" of the rails also. Excellent catch. The city looks wonderful. Very nice place. Amtrak goes with it. Lots of Amtrak. Nice looking drive.
Wow! That was the fastest I think I've ever seen a street runner move, and I'm sure the locals wish that trash train would go even faster! Also, those look like yellow flashers on the top of the signal posts! Cool!
When my grandfather used to haul tar from a tar plant when I was a kid, It damn near killed me. The smell of hot tar being filled in train tanks singed my nose hairs. I just couldn't handle that smell, My grandmother always took me & my brother with her to pick him up sometimes. But almighty god! that garbage train! I WOULD be dead & buried from inhaling that! lol! I also like how the Amtrak train engine makes that hiss sound! So glad I discovered this channel.
Another great Train video I Love Trains and am an Ex Railway man, thanks for the Up-load and as always Stay Safe out there where-ever you maybe and Go (Nmcfmamf) ..
Was anybody else nerdy enough to try counting the cars on that stink train (104 counting the three engines and 20 dumpsters), or were you guys just giving thanks to the gods that there’s no Smell-O-Vision?
Garbage trains do stink worse in the summer. Stinkin all the way from New York City to South Carolina. I remember the first time I saw one it was nothing but a whole unit train then they started adding other equipment to the train over time. There was a time a few years ago that CSX parked a garage train, in the summer, down south for some reason. The residents of that community didn’t appreciate it at all. Gee I wonder why.
When I was young and strong, now Im old and week, I was a switchman on the C&NW. Once a week we had to switch out filled gondolas with the "guts" of animals from a slaughter house! you dident feel like eating after that! The saving grace, was I wasent working in the slaughter house!
I used to work at a grocery store and a man with a special dump truck used to come by and pick up the rotten meat waste from the meat and seafood departments. It was the most horrible, vile smell in the world. This guy would come by every week and this was his job to pick up this horrible smelling meat waste. He would push the garbage cans past me on the way to his truck LOL.
Norsk Viking Got that beat-the last apartment my husband and I rented was in the county seat and directly adjacent to the town’s wastewater treatment facility. We spent 1 1/2 years living downwind of that funk, and believe it or not, we got used to it! It was fun blowing the minds of the people coming to the grocery store in the strip mall in front of the apartment complex-they’d be complaining about the smell, and we’d say “What smell?” When they couldn’t believe we couldn’t smell the sewage stank, we explained that we couldn’t smell it anymore because we’d lived there too long! Fast forward 15 years later, and now that we’ve lived elsewhere for that long our noses have now reset themselves and the smell from that place is enough to knock you on your butt again! Oh, well....
Trains are so elusive. Hey man thanks for sharing this as I never would have seen what a train looks like. I got to tell all my friends I finally seen a train.
We'd never get that close to trains over here, they'd be surrounded by fences and barbed wire. I'll swear I saw a swarm of flies following that trash train :) Nice film work as always Brian.
I believe the town is going to put up fences but NOT the kind that are ugly or cheap. I recall seeing some debate about the issue. As long as they put up something nice it should not be a problem, though they won't necessarily do much since one could still walk on the tracks from the level road crossings.
@@BurtonSKnowles thanks for the update. Unfortunately in the UK, we have issues with people trespassing on the tracks, with near misses, and sadly, fatalities as well. Sometimes they're graffiti or tagging victims, or playing 'chicken', or just too keen to get close to the track action. Do you have the same problems in the USA?
Sir Brian !! Did you check out the Train/toy shop across the tracks from where you filmed the stink train ?? Don't see too many of those shops anymore !! In Greenville,SC ,,there is still a toy shop Called 'O P Taylors " as it is part of "" Merchant's "" stores out of NC.. !!! Enjoyed the videos & keep them coming !!! "" KEEP IT SAFE """ !!
The Stink Train definitely had a garbage unit to it but it wasn't ALL stink, lots of other units in it. I've seen the garbage container cars before, but fortunately, mine didn't stink so bad, because it was being used to transport recyclables rather then garbage.
I visited Ashland, VA earlier this year, March 15th to be exact. In fact, I live about an hour and a half to two hours North of Ashland on near th same CSX Line.
Hey Jaw tooth that's one train I would not enjoy watching. Phew!!!. I'd love to live along that street. Just look out living room window wacthing trains. Have a great railroad day
@wedge4hire, Shit train don't carry no homeless, shit train, shit train don't carry no homeless, shit train....you know that old song This Train Don't Carry No Sinners...
If it goes to San Francisco for shit pickup, it will probably pass through Stockton here and back. So, where will they dump it at? They should rename it..San Fran-Shitsco..
They spend money giving clean needles to addicts while ignoring open defecation , which is more infectious and dangerous than needles. Its just a matter of time til an epedemic hits these cities. Then all hell will break loose when large cities will be under quarantine and Martial Law much like "Escape From New York".
Very few times when I was at the Roselle Park NJT station, I saw a CSX Garbage train pass through it. It sure as hell stunk like crazy. I always run away from the station to avoid the smell.
Have watched Ashlands 3 cameras on A N other site -but there not this good Brian -unusual subject to catch -cant be anything worse than rotting garbage ? No wonder it travels at speed ! Amtrak is a bonus ! Thanks Jawtooth ! Regards
The trash train runs right through the city, and everybody sickens. It's hauling boatloads of bad cheese, and wet feathers plucked from chickens. But one day this train of odiferous joy, may pass the landfill by. But instead, to a refinery, with a renewable energy supply.
Better that city than right here in Columbia SC I'm glad we don't have trash trains running down here in Columbia I think they have trains like that going through Florence but not here.
Damn. For street running, that trash train was moving. Once the power went b, I noticed it pan really quietly except for the cars that had flat spots on the wheels. It must be welded rail through town.
Lol.... I'm glad I live near tracks and railways that don't haul garbage. We get enough stink in our town from local industries, don't need any imported stink, thank you.
I've been to Ashland for 3 times now, such a beautiful city and a great place to railfan sense it is one of the only street-running train places in the US. Has anyone else been to this wonderful place?
Beautiful job is done by you it was a pleasure to watch your presentation, my dear. It takes times and effort of which I am very appreciative ... Stay blessed...Regards Khalique...{:-)
I go to Ashland a lot. The Trains & Toy store is great a lot of trains in there for such a small store. Kenny the guy on the bike is very interesting to talk to.
So did the railroad come through first and then the city built parallel and perpendicular to it or did the railroad come through after the town was built? Way back in the day, I doubt people ever thought about using the trains to move the shit from a city to some other place but people poop and "the mail" has to go somewhere.
Unusual not to hear the usual three blasts on the horn for each crossing passed (at least 2 it crossed with no warning given) - I would've thought the risk greater in a larger town...
Really nice video Jaw Tooth! A couple of questions for you though. First the displayed car or caboose you had crawled under. Is that device coming off of the wheel looks like a gear box going to a generator does that sound like a good guess? Then the stink cars do you know where they originate from and do you think they are loaded by conveyor? Or a crane? Does it look like the green container is separate from the car and can be set on and off of the cars or do the somehow dump the whole car or what? You said they were going to a land fill, so to me that makes me think the green container can be separated from the car to possibly be trucked to where the get dumped? Otherwise the rails need to go right into the landfill and I've never seen that anywhere and they would have to be built right to final area which continuously changes in a land fill and usually continues to grow in elevation or at least the ones in our area do. It would be nice to know their final destination and google map the site to see how they do it. Perhaps they are going to an incinerator instead of which they do in a couple of areas in Wisconsin and actually produce steam for turbines and the produce power. All in all you really got my curiosity peaked and hope you can do some type of follow up video on how this trash is finally dealt with, but I'll leave that up to your discression?
They originate in a few different places in the new york, new Jersey area but the entire train is built in Conrail's oak island yard in North Jersey. The containers themselves are removable from the cars and are loaded by conveyer and compacted. When they get down south they are unloaded like intermodal containers and put on trucks to be sent to where ever they are dumping it. This would be the Q300 since it's loaded, empty would be the Q301
Okay, so I've seen the stink train. But without Smell-o-vision what is it? Just a train video. And only a few cars were stinkers, and the rest was just a regular train. Where's the beef? What's the big stink about anyway?
Years ago in Vegas, a train went by the Union Plaza casino full of hogs. Casino porters went outside with cans of air fresheners. They should have sprayed inside the casino instead.
Per chance that Trains & Toys store (in Amtrak scene) could provide everything you need to model your very own Stink Train (aroma sold separately). Cheers!
Silly man on the bike , ( no crash helmet ) , and Why are the garbage containers , "Uncovered" , out here in Oz , all garbage containers are sealed , No stink trains down under !
0:55 - Can see the warning lights facing the parallel roads. Instead of two red flashers, you got one yellow flasher and one that's lit constantly with the words "NO LEFT TURN" (Just putting this here for folks who've never seen this before. Not common. Not very safe imo.... yellow means 'proceed with caution' and the 'No Left Turn' sign on these isn't really very clear, with small text and the margins of the lamp/sign not very bright. And it's way up high, above the normal sight line.)
Yep this actully proves my assertion , That the United States is a Fourth (4th) world Country it's mostly Third Would Countries that allow Cities and Towns to be built within the 6' Retired Irish Rail Craftsman.
axel mounted generator, that one was shaft driven, other types are belt driven. the only axel mount that ive seen on a red caboose was old southern bay window cabooses
Okay, first thing wrong is a "guy" named Kenny wearing a skirt, garter, and pink high heels on a "men's" bicycle. The second thing wrong is that the "scratch-and-sniff" feature on my monitor did not work. Did you forget to upload the smell track with it? Nice to see a couple of "hobo" cars near the end with the doors left open.
Trash train in Ashland. Damn. Is he heading northbound or southbound? If he's going north, might be taking trash to Potomac Landfill in Dumfries, or Prince William County landfill in Manassas, they get trash trucks from all over the place, maybe they get trainloads too? _But where did it come from?_ That's the sixty-four dollar question. I've seen a similar trash train idling on a siding in Pittsburgh, about 11 or 12 years ago. (& it _stunk!_ ) Figured it probably came from NY, but who the hell knows...(?)
Looking a little closer at the green containers carrying trash it appears they are loaded and unloaded from the rail cars using a large forklift. That’s has to be a nasty 😷 job.
That stink train ought to run up to DC and dump it all around the capitol and Kenny can ride his bicycle up the and tell them it's a present from all the people of Ashland Va...
Actually, I live in DC and several CSX "stink" trains pass thru the mainline just 4 blocks from the US Capitol where Congress meets. They pass thru daily and they do stink! Especially in the summer!
the TRASH TRAIN come from NEW YORK CITY that go to RUSSELL KY go to the land fill just 10mi down the road and yes it STINK sometime the train stay in the train yard for weeks at a time
Do you know when they leave Russell Ky to go to the landfill. I was wanting to film a train on that spur going to the landfill. I use to watch trains on that line all the time when I was in college at Morehead, Ky
Ken's nick name, as he is known in Ashland, is Jingles. This has to do with the bells he has adorned himself with, so as to not draw attention to his short skirt.
