He is a lesson on how to strengthen your traditional grip left hand.
The exercises demonstrated are from my Three Camps book as well as from Joe Morello's Master Studies.
The pad I am using is an old quiet tone practice pad.
The sticks are barrel tip models that I make.

I'm 67 and have always played using traditional grip. I recently discovered your videos, and I expect to really improve based on your teaching. I'm ready to get to work on it. Your expertise and thoroughness is what I've been looking for.

You have a very good teaching style. Profound, but practical and easily understable. My English is mediocre but these lessons have helped me greatly!

Great as always, would be great if you can do a video on analyzing rhythm: how you count various rhythms/ subdivisions or how you break down intricate rhythms, explaining rhythmic terms such as hemiola, polyrhythm etc, anything that has to do with rhythm and notation 😊🥁

I love that you are operating under the assumption of a future in which drummers will need to calibrate for the different gravitational pulls of other planets. 😂 For real, though, this is super helpful for a guitar player like me to get a hold of these concepts, so thank you.

You can purchase the book Sittin in with the Big Band Vol.2. The charts are in there. I talk about how to play them and show the full chart at the end of the video if you watch the whole thing.

I really wish to learn from you however, I feel you need to slow it down and simplify it for us mere mortals. I hope to see a new clip on these exercises broken down and kept as simple play along technique exercises. We would all benefit from your great skill set if it was applied slowly and methodically. Kind regards Kev

I would suggest you take in-person private lessons with a professional teacher/player. This grip is best taught in a way where it can be monitored for bad habits.

Rick, I am trying to develop my traditional grip (left hand) and, well it's a challenge. I used to play in a Scottish side drum line at age 11, I am now 65, and ex-builder and matched grip player since the age of 7. Your 3 clips, although they are awesome, give me great cause to stress out and consider not putting time into this grip. You explain it really well, show the thumb, fingers on top, fingers on the bottom and quickly how to use them. Then, from there you launch into paradiddles at high speed, singles at high speed, triplets and doubles at high speed. How on earth is someone supposed to actually get a true understanding and application through examples (which are at speed) when you just skip past any slow and meaningful use of these tools. I sat and watched, and I can see and hear great playing however, when you start to show your articulation at speed, how is this possible going to help me or anyone. It's just too fast and there appears to be little consideration for starting very slow and outlining solid and meaningful training and development. I hope you understand, I want to learn and, I am trainer myself so I have a full grasp on how to impart knowledge to students (building, architecture & watercolour) in an explanatory manner, you are too fast for a beginner to grasp the starting points as you move very quickly into your skills as a great player.. I hope you understand, you are awesome but just way too fast for me to work with you and progress slowly. Kind regards Kev

Hi Kevin You can slow the speed down on youtube. Just hit the settings button and you will see the options. I would suggest you take in-person private lessons with a professional teacher/player. This grip is best taught in a way where it can be monitored for bad habits.

Hi Let it bounce and then use your fingers when it stops bouncing. That's the magic.

the stick always slides forward unless play very slowly. is there a point of pressure im not applying?
@rickdior
@rickdior Год назад
You need to apply some pressure to your fulcrum so the stick stays put. It takes a while to develop strength in the traditional hand, so be patient. Make sure you spend lots of time on the three exercises I show you in the beginning.
