This video is all about the popular streptocarpus houseplant. We learn all about its hybridising history, modern varieties, new developments, care, propagation, growing tips and lots more. The information is taken from an article I had published in the Irish Garden magazine in January 2019 and includes footage and photos of hybrid streps by Dibley's, Franken, Dimetris, Kabanova/Trofimenko, Piotr Kleszczynski, Ford, Allison Bilverstone & Fleischle.
The strep t-shirt I am wearing in the video is available for sale, also the same design on a mug, cushion, tote bag & long-sleeved shirt. If you enjoyed the video, please consider buying one to support the channel...

Of course she is. That's what I say👌 best comment👍. It's for everybody's eyes to see that she really loooves to care and raise these wonderful flowers. I found my first ones on the garbage out potted and blossom less. I didn't know what that is, potted in in good soil gave them rain water and a mist of rain with the spray bottle every evening and one week later I saw the first little blossom stems coming up. It was a white one with a veiny violet color and the second one that bloomed isyellow and white with 3 dark red lashes that are painted from center of the blossom.(i hope I write all right to understand because I'm from austria🇦🇹. Anyways! I did only find pictures on the white/yellow one but it seems that this streptocarpus have no name. Didn't find anything.

Yeesssss! 😍 A top notch video! Just what I needed as a beginner. We moved to a BIG 300 year old house, and my only streptocarpus went wild and tries to take over the world with flowers. And, I have 26 windows, including a place to keep them over the winters. ( My husband claims that I've gone seriously crazy, but there is worse addictions to have. 🤪 )

The twisted seed pots must go brown before opening and collecting seed. If yo are afraid to miss them, attach a small paper bag to the stem! Something like a coin or seed enveloppe. Hope this helps.

Thank you, thank you, for your informative video! I took 5 pages of notes while I was watching!!! I have a dark purple plant, that is in a huge pot, and spreads out in a 3 foot circumference - it has over 80 big blossoms on it right now, and it is glorious! I live in Alaska, and was given a small plant from a friend's large plant about 4 years ago, which has grown into my big beautiful plant. I do have one worry - the end of every single leaf has turned brown and brittle.... I'm not sure what to do... Do you have any advice for me? Thank you for any ideas you can send.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 4 года назад
Thank you for watching and I am glad you found the video useful. Your specimen streptocarpus sounds fabulous. Brown leaf tips can be due to natural die back or incorrect feeding. Besides these, reasons can be complex. Trim off the brown tips with a scissors but maybe it's also time to propagate your plant by leaf cutting. Hope this helps.

Hi there.. a video to study and ponder frequently!! Thank you. I do have a question regarding fertilizing. You had mentioned in another video that one can use a tomato fertilizer at 1/4 strength. Super Video, thank you! I have propagated a lot of Streptocarpus from seed ordered at Dibleys this spring. I so much would like to cross some of my already flowering Streptocarpus plants. What would be the best method to pollinate them? I don't want to put them outside for insects to pollinate them, as we have a lot of aphids in the garden this year. Would you have any advice for me, please?

@@GardeningatDouentza Okay, thank you anyway. Will keep trying. I've read that some are sterile, so I'll have to try the ones that I have grown from seed, once they flower. I've definitely observed male and female flowers, so maybe with the ones I have tried to pollinate, just a little patience is required. I have, as you suggested in your video, removed the petals of spent flowers, but I've tried to keep the developing seed pod. I will try to propagate the ones I've got also the conventional way. There are just never enough window sills in the house ;-)

In noticing orchid fertilizer brands, the numbers change significantly. Might you be able to share what we should be looking for and again the strength required.. full or 1/4. Thanks again!
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 2 года назад
Hi there. I use orchid focus on my streps at 1/4 strength as this is the concentration I give my orchids weekly. For convenience I use the left over fertilizer that drains through the orchids. There are proprietary streptocarpus fertilisers you can buy (and they don't usually share their formulation) but failing that you will probably need to experiment with a tomato fertiliser at quarter strength. They do have different formulations so in case of doubt start with a lower concentration so as not to burn your plants.
