THANK YOU!!! I've had streps for several years, but this is the first time I've ever heard they are short lived and will die off. I thought I was doing something wrong! My wonderful plants that I've had for about 4 years have gotten weaker and weaker and were dying and I've tried everything to save them. I had no idea this was normal. Thanks so much for this information. Really good info on how to keep them going, and you have a beautiful collection. Thanks!

Wow, that's so pretty to see your table full of flowers. Not only the flowers are looking gorgeous , the strong shiny leaves are beautiful as well. I would love to have such a nice plant but the biggest con is that they need space that I can't provide. I have to resist but luckily there're yours and I can look at them whenever I want. Thank you Rachel for the wonderful video and the rich information. Have a nice Sunday !

I always love looking at your Streptoccarpus. They have always been on my list of plants to try. My con is the space, however I would like to try one. I don't think of myself as a pink person, but I think that those are my favorite!

Wow, I loved 'Spring Daydreams' and your description fit perfectly. I have to admit that the cons that you mentioned put me off for the moment, especially the short-livedness. But that's not too bad, I don't have space for another plant family anyway. ;)

Bumblebee, each leaf is a new separate individual plant, all you need to do is remove the old leaves that have finished flowering, each leaf has a predetermined amount of flowers I think it is about twelve and they flower from the base up ..one at a time, hence they flower over a huge amount of time, after the last flower the leaf will start die anyway and new ones continuously reappear, the problem really is with tidying them up and removing spent flowers and old leaves, because they will become untidy looking if neglected. Roots do like having a spring clean every so often, you can easily do this once a year, just loosen as much of the old soil away and replace with new, I use Jacks Magic along with perlite and a little vermiculite mixed in and they love it! They always end up dying because we do something wrong or a pest/bug has got at them, but then of course you can take cuttings of it and away you go again! ..always take cuttings anyway if you love the plant so you have a back up in case they go tits up.

Beautiful! I have babies and have read somewhere about their lifespan and have forgotten about it until you mentioned it now. It's a really shame but how can you not have some in your collections as they are really lovely plants. Have you done some propagation of your older ones?
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 7 лет назад
Yes, it is a shame, Susana. But I guess you can't have everything with one plant. Yes, I have a number of cuttings on the way. Thank you for watching :)

They are so beautiful, Rachel! My streptocarpuses don't do well in the winter. The cinnamon looks like an Addams Family plant. The DS Good Mood looks better, but it is rather sad looking if compared to yours. Leaves keep hanging low, and look only slightly better after I water them. I repotted them in the end of the summer, in the same pots, but with fresh potting mix. The roots had not grown that much. I wonder if I should have potted them in smaller pots. I have seen streptocarpus videos on RU-vid by an Ukrainian woman, and the roots on her plants fill the pots completely. Mine were nothing like that. Clearly I'm doing something wrong, but probably it would be good to try to repot them again now in the winter.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 7 лет назад
Streptocarpus roots really should fill the pot before they get potted on. It is not usually a problem. Have you remembered to stop fertilising for winter? I'm not sure what to say really :P
@orchidsadutchy4940
@orchidsadutchy4940 7 лет назад
Gardening at Douentza Yes, I'm not fertilizing anymore. Do you think I could still repot them now into smaller pots?

Hi Rachel. A great video. I did not know that the plants have a limited life span. I am wondering if the simpler plants like the first small baby plant you showed us ( crystal ice I think) have a longer life span than the larger flowered more frilly types. I tend to like the plain ones the best.
@GardeningatDouentza
@GardeningatDouentza 7 лет назад
Hi Beverly. I'm afraid I don't know about that. It hasn't been my experience so far but different plants would have different traits.

I.tried to propagate my Polish streps (Drako and Wow) from leave cuttings in vermiculite.They all rotted. ( twice) The tiny whole leaves taken along with the leaf cuttings and growing along side the cuttings are growing into little plants. Any ideas about what I did wrong with the cuttings. I have divided my plants and they are regrowing. One of them flowered and has continued to flower. It was the one I gave to a good friend. You have explained why the others are sitting around growing slowly. Sigh! I have two other Streps that struggle: one is Dibney Blue, so I am really motivated to get a good plant. The other one may be a species type as it is smaller flowered and rather plainer in its colour scheme. Thanks again for the video.

@laurieparis2203 7 лет назад
candace weir if you used a mature leaf for your leaf cuttings, instead of a fresh new leaf from close to the center, that may be why they rotted?

Douentza is a town in Mali in West Africa, where I spent some time in 1989. I spent six months in West Africa then. The sky, from the roof of a building following a storm, in Douentza one night was indescribably amazing and counts as one of my most important life experiences. Unfortunately this part of the world is no longer accessible.

Gardening at Douentza thank you! What a great backstory. I did look up "Douentza" before I asked, and saw it was as you said... but I could not put together Ireland and Mali, until you told your tale.

Are you in America, Laurie? Actually, by coincidence (or maybe it was because of your question) I recently started scanning the photographs I took from that trip onto the computer. I was thinking what I might do is make a video about why my garden is called Daountza and just show some of these photos and talk about the trip. What do you think?
