Still, I’m saying this as an advice, but don’t rely on this to make you sound on time, never stop practicing with a metronome! It sucks, I know, but in the long run, it’ll make you better, more on time and less time spent on editing! Cheers!
@@charlespetitclerc1256 True. Same thing goes to vocal. I learned that it's better to learn proper technique rather than spending so much time on EQ, stretch/warp, or tuning. For example I wasted my time trying to fix nasally voice when it could've been fixed with a retake lol.
I really enjoy how in all of your videos, you start with the slow, manual way of doing something so you can explain exactly why you do each part of a task; THEN you move on to "Oh, and by the way, this is how you do all of that automatically, or much more efficiently."
Excellent. Glad you put this out today as I was reading up on stretch markers not three hours ago. Haha. Also, I really appreciate how you show several methods of doing the same thing. That's exceptionally helpful and informative. Peace
OH. MY. GOSH! I've been on Reaper for 10 years - can't believe I've never seen these. Using a lot of audio samples in my music this will make life tons easier. Thank you!
I've started using stretch markers last Thursday, and my recordings sound so much tighter now. Thanks for this updated video, which clarifies the different techniques and shortcuts.
Great guide Kenny - just a quick note. When using dynamic split to add stretch markers by detecting the threshold of the transients, the option 'Display gate threshold in media items' isn't checked by default, which makes setting the threshold correctly more time consuming and difficult, sine you're then forced to use your peak metres. The dialogue window for the gate also isn't floating by default, as seen in this example. Awesome guide, just wanted to leave a comment in case other Reaper users struggle with this option. Keep up the good work! :)
Fun fact : I noticed after doing this that there were some blue stretch markers , the rest were red . When I played back these sections the blue parts were out of sync . By dragging these markers down to match the red ones “ everything “ was now perfectly synced . This is a game changer for me because now I can alter my creation process. Usually I create a drum track 1st and build around it BUT now I can start with any instrument or even vocals and perfectly sync everything else afterwards. THANK YOU SO MUCH !
Thats totally possible but keep in mind that your mileage may vary when it comes to some instruments especially those without super clear transient dynamics. If you try to do this with something with a long release or a bassline with constant signal you'll introduce unnatural sounding "artifacts".
Kenny, I quad tracked a song and the guitar notes are all over the place (I tried to get good takes, but it seems impossible to track it perfectly), I watched this video and stayed up all night moving the notes around on all four guitar tracks. Thank you!
Thanks Kenny!!! I was putting a song together this weekend and I really had some timing issues. This makes adjustments sooo much easier. Thank you for this demo on Stretch Markers!!❤❤❤
Hi Kenny great video as always. I noticed that when you're moving stretch markers you can drag the marker up and down as well. What is that for? Cheers
i love all ur vids, such a wonderful resource! thank you. i have a question pertaining to stretch markers; although very mindful where to place them when aligning vocals, i find that i get a popping sound at the point of marker which makes the vocal unsable. am i doing something obviously wrong?
Nice, I'll try the "transient guides" next time. I use the stretch markers as you shown, for quickly aligning my guitar parts. The thing I regret is it is a "hard" quantize, you need extra scripts to be able to quantize with a percentage and have a more natural feeling, while still doing this automatically.
Do you recommend bouncing to a new clip after correcting the timing with stretch markers? If you leave it as is, you might accidentally change it doing some other editing in the future. What do you think?
I wish you can do the a video like the previous one you did for singers 'how to record your first track in reaper' do for rappers as well. Like how to add fx and all the effects for HipHop/Rap type of a tamplate, would really appreciate for life Kenny. I been doing it lately and just cut seem to find a right template for rap .
add a compressor (like ReaComp) with a ratio of 4, threshold getting about 6db of gain reduction, fast attack, fast release, then with an eq (ReaEQ for example), cut everything under 100 or 150Hz, if you feel like it lower the mids around 500hz, and boost the top end maybe about 2Khz and above by 2db or something, add reverb (ReaVerbate) at the end, but dont go too crazy on the wet value, keep it lower than you might think, again, all of this values really depend, on the sound of the beat you are using, the tone of the voice, and the mic used, if you get stuck with the fx settings, you could look up Kenny's videos on those specific plugins i mentioned, good luck
Sometimes my stretch markers lines are straight, sometimes they are angled. Is this covered under warranty? ;) Jokes aside, where do I control the slope, and what are they used for?
Any chance you could do a video using stretch markers to line up a long audio track made on Reaper and a long video track made with a camera with a lot of drift?
Is it possible to transfer stretch markers from one item to another? I'd like to use drum transients one one track to stretch another track to fit the grid. Thanks!
Just out of curiosity, why don’t you use tab to transient to find the spot to put the markers in? Do you find that it isn’t as reliable as trying to visually identify transients?
@@georgegeorges4162 This is a popular old feature in Pro Tools (Tab to Transient) that I learned was also implemented in Reaper when I first tried it around 2014. I loooove the tab transient function... I feel like every DAW should have it.
Does anyone know how to do this with stereo tracks? So like using stretch markers for two recordings of the same piano (left ear and right ear). I need the stretch markers to be in the identical time positions for both
F*** sake, it was this simple all along. Dynamic split adds stretch markers with the ability to modify the sensitivity as well as delete unnecessary markers. THANK YOU KENNY for the medicine to relieve my headache, I am a Bass player in a band where mainly the guitar player has always had a problem with trying to lead the foundation and a drummer who can't resist the urge to stop listening to me and follow the guitar player instead. Which anyone who knows, is like just a matter of a few Bars and Measures from acceleration of the tempo and its so hard to reel them back in once they start walking off track. It's frustrating. So I have finally conceded that I have to teach myself to be the engineer who edits the problems out and mixes everything properly because years have been wasted on thousands of takes that apparently paying the going rate for local sound studios (which in So. CA is a premium) who invest a lot of money into studio equipment they obviously don't know how to use. Anyway, thank you, I learned what to do and I know exactly how I can use dynamic splits now.
Kenny, I used pro tools as my learning DAW, but now I am using and loving reaper. When using warp or stretch markers in pro tools, the computer was using a lot of RAM or CPU )If I had multiple tracks with these markers) so I had to press something like "Commit to elastic audio" to make pro tools render or something the selected track ... Do I have to do the same in reaper (Something like commit to elastic audio) after adjusting all my stretch markers ?? Yes, no ? and how ? Thanks in advance !!
Hey Kenny. Can you make a video about adjusting bass to the rhythm of the drums and not to the grids? I have a problem that everything was recorded more or less in rhythm with the drums, only bass line and acoustic guitar is are out of the rhythm because actually it's a fault of the drums player. Instead of recording again drums and bass, then acoustic, electric and 4 violins, cause it's impossible because of bass player and drums player not willing to do it (it's a nonprofit project) I'd like to resolve it with only recording acoustic guitar after I adjust bass to the rhythm of the drums. Is it possible to do it? And how?
I'm glad we have this, but i do really wish reaper had the ability to just effortlessly quantize an audio item with a keyboard shortcut like pro tools does. So far that is the only thing I've found that I can do in pro tools but not reaper.
Hahahaha, I'm watching your other video about stretch markers, and there is a notification of this video ... Thank you Kenny, God bless Regards, From Indonesia....
hi i use reaper with mackie mixer,i love the sound from mixer. If i render in reaper it's in the box,not the sound from mixer so i wanna know if i can record the mixer out with reaper while play my music in it.Thnx
Shift-W does not insert stretch marker at cursor on my Reaper PC. I even tried to insert it in the menu with other marker commands - no go, it’s grayed out - can’t be selected. Can’t be activated from the Actions dialog box either. What’s up with that?
great video as always! i tried this feature when it came out and had the weirdest sound glitches. tried experimenting with the stretch algorithm with no succes. never touched it again. what did i do wrong?
It's not universal. Warping audio isn't magic and needs specific conditions to produce a perfectly natural sound. If you stretch too far the algorithm the repitching can't handle it no matter what settings you use. Signals with little to no dynamic range will be very difficult to edit and the process of using the fast method of inserting markers on transients will probably not work. The example given here has pretty ideal dynamic range for warping. Make sure you have a stretch marker on every single transient in the track and don't stretch too far and you should be able to get good results with a bit of fiddling. May I ask what type of track you where trying this on?
Stretch markers are my best friends! They changed the quality of my sloppy playing dramatically... thanks for the videos. Does Reaper have a similar tool for volume? It would be a really easy way to control volume swells.
this is fucking amazing! so simple and user friendly. finally just had to pay the modest 60$ fee, this software has helped me so much its hard not to admire the creators. and as usual Kenny your tutorials are platinum!
Sadly a big stutter and clip problem with stretch markers and quantizing items in Reaper, no matter what the fade size is set as. Pretty much the only thing that is a real sub standard feature in an otherwise brilliant DAW. I have to go back to Cubase to do any of this kind of intense quantizing work.
A really great video! I'm currently creating an AB test with 10 different tracks. Does anyone have a tip for exclusive solo switching without clipping or clicks? My files are all in sync so far, with some help of the stretch markers and Time Align Reaper script.
You can use auto translate. Since there are no subtitles here, you have to first auto generate them. So.. 1. auto generate english captions and 2. auto translate to any language. The future is now! ;)
