There’s a lot of well-deserved praise going around for Sean Strickland today.
In fact, I think it’s taking the MMA world a bit of time to really get behind the idea that this win was actually more about Strickland was doing and less about Israel being off.
Sure there’s a middle ground between the two - but Strickland stepped up and defied the odds in a way that barely made sense while watching it live.
His pressure, his defense, the moments he chose to spring out and attack, the fight IQ he showed, and the dedication he displayed to his gameplan, where absolutely nothing was ever going to deter him from fighting the way he wanted to fight - save for those final 20 seconds where he came out of his shell and let Israel know exactly how he felt.
This was a masterpiece and in my opinion, it was an upset or a shock that goes way beyond the other candidates in the all-time upset conversation - and trust me, it’s not hard to see why.

If Strickland had knocked adesanya out in the 1st round it would have been described as"lucky" but he out thought and out fought him. It's a lesson adesanya will never ever forget.

Many fighters don't tend to comeback the same after being outclassed like that. They realize deep down that they're not the best anymore which messes with their confidence. To give some examples; Renan Barao was never the same after his first fight with TJ Dillashaw, Anthony Pettis was never the same after the RDA fight, Tony Ferguson was never the same after Justin Gaethje (he did take a VERY concerning amount of damage though), Tyron Woodley was never the same after Kamaru Usman, JDS was never the same after his fights with Cain Velasquez and even though he's 2-0 since Volkanovski 3, I believe we've seen the best of Max Holloway as well.

Yeah this one will be extra hard for him, he thought his life was going to go a certain way after he Beat Alex and he was “manifesting” his life in a certain way, and then this happens, His confidence was shot at the end of the fight and Sean was bullying him. Kinda reminded me of when you see two animals fighting for Alpha and one suddenly stops and runs off knowing it’s been beat and it’s over. @@remyhavoc4463 That wasn't an outclassing though. It was a competitive fight with Jan really only dominating the last two rounds with wrestling. It was also a forgivable loss because it was up a weight division. The loss to Sean though? Sean beat Izzy at his own game for 4 of 5 rounds, dropping him in the 1st, battering him throughout and mentally breaking him in the final round.

I’ll be the first to admit I never ever thought Sean was championship caliber. He really showed a great game this past Saturday and it was definitely his night. If you watch Strickland fight in his time in UFC. I thought his style was really weird but intresting. Keeps it very basic and fundamentals but he uses heavy cardio. I thought he was championship level. The thing is, he has a bad rap for being "according to" UFC and Media: Obnoxious, annoying, homophobic and racist so basically he was canceled out or already put negative in his media coverage. People didn't take him for granted and he wasn't really put out there by the UFC in PPV. Given that, he has absolutely done a solid job. He was kind of in the Belal list. No one want didn't want to fight him yet the UFC was trying to cancel him out. You saw until recently that Robert Whitticker wanted to fight Sean before Sean got the nod for the Izzy fight. If you take Sean's personality or negative image he is a solid high IQ fighter. No wonder he's a mentor in his camp. People like to be around him and he feeds off great energy for his camp and fighters.

I agree. Izzy is 1-2 in his last 3 fights. He doesn't deserve a rematch (especially given how Sean dismantled him). He should fight Dricus and the winner should get the title shot. This way we are sure Dricus vs Izzy happens and either fight coming out of it would be fire. That said, the UFC clearly don't want Sean Strickland as Champ. I keep bouncing back and forth between how I feel. On one hand, TJ was mostly unknown when he fought Barao which is why he was so underrated. For Sean, he was top 5 and had been seen as just not that guy. He wasn't underrated because people didn't know him, he was underrated because people had assumed he just didn't have the talent. it's a big difference and it makes his win a bit more impressive imo. I think it's interesting that we see more and more holes in Izzy's game, with each loss he takes. WIth Jan, is was that he was bigger and heavier and mixed in takedowns. With Alex, it was that he can be knocked out and if you take away his reach advantage, he is touchable. But with Strickland...I don't even know what to say. Maybe that it's he has an inability to deal with pressure, doesn't make use of a full MMA arsenal (never tries to grapple), or he can't adjust mid-fight. Because it's wild to me that a champion of his calibre, with coaches like Bareman in his corner, can't make a read on Strickland over the course of a full five rounds and figure out some way to have success.

I still feel the Dillashaw/Barao fight was the most impressive upset because A) it was insanely savage on dillishaws part against a beast of a champ and B) it was the the moment of seeing a new champ who looked levels above the person who looked levels above, basically a new era from a new destroyer -- with strickland I dont see him as a potential long reigning champ, he just seems like he has izzy's number and so it may be the end for izzy being on top but I think this just opens the division for rotating champs

Yea, I think I'll need some time to reflect. But Dillashaw beating Barao is the other major upset that just ticked all boxes. Cody/Dom was another one pointed to by one of our commentors.

He beat him 4 times, once for every round. Maybe round 2 is debatable. He dominated him nearly the whole fight.

I know that now saying I believed Sean would win carries no weight at all. Sounds like BS. But I really did see a path to victory for Strickland, and it turned out to be what he did: Pressure him WITHOUT getting over-aggressive. Izzy is an absolute genius at luring his opponents into a mistake. Sean resisted, and stayed at range even when he had some opportunities. Most of Izzy's opponents have not been able to resist the urge to close the distance and try to finish him. Izzy's counter striking is so elite he just has had to wait on those situations. Sean never presented that chance. A master class in figuring out an opponent.

I’m not sure what you watched but it was a pure dominant performance from Strickland
@MMADIVE
@MMADIVE 9 месяцев назад
Yea you can call it that, for sure. It was a shade or two below the likes of Dillashaw/Barao - so I'll stick with calling it 'comfortable'. Splitting hairs though, it's right on the border-line for me.

it was, but less obvious because the gap in skill wasn't in offense but defense.

Reminds me of Woodley Vs Usman, Tyron never recovered from that, I think it's safe to say Izzy's reign is over, he will never regain that confidence, the king is dead, long live the king, this game is brutal.

Its happened enough times throughout MMA history to count; Anthony Pettis was never the same after the RDA fight, Renan vs TJ, JDS vs Cain 2 & 3, Tony vs Justin, Condit vs Lawler, one could argue Max vs Volk 3. We may have to add another one to the list.

Another case of "great fundamentals vs player fighter". Watching Hamed vs Barrera was the same kind of experience.

I feel that this is more like those boxing fights where a fighter gets exposed, like Spence vs Crawford. Izzy is not bad, but he was exposed as a bit one dimensional.

I’d love to see a rematch one day. But I think Izzy needs to get a few wins before getting a rematch. But knowing Dana and how much he hates Sean and loves Izzy. I bet the rematch will be the next fight.

HE USED HIS BRAIN FIRST, AND THOUGHT TO HIMSELF "WHO HAS BEATEN IZZY"? AND HE WENT TO SPAR FROM WHAT I HEARD MANY MANY ROUNDS, DAYS, WITH ALEX PEREIRA THE ONLY MAN TO KNOCK OUT IZZY, AND HE SOAKED UP KNOWLEDGE LIKE A SPONGE , DEFENSES, OFFENSE AVAILABILITIES, AND HE PICKED IZZY APART JUST AS ALEX PEREIRA HAD DONE MULTIPLE TIMES. IT'S NEVER TOO LATE TO LEARN HOW TO BE THE BEST YOU CAN EVER BE. I SEE SEAN CONTINUING TO SPAR WITH ALEX PEREIRA AND GET EVEN WAY BETTER AND UNBEATABLE, GREAT JOB SEAN STRICKLAND 👍🏽

Im not a casual fan, with that said I was not surprised at the outcome. Sean Strickland was completely underrated and disregarded in this fight. I really think that most people got caught up in his shenanigans and didn't realize the guy can actually fight and hes technically a really good fighter. I also think everyone got caught up in MMA math. Just because a guy beats someone and then another guy beats that guy doesn't mean that he can beat the other guys opponent. This one was not as much of a shock to me as some of the other upsets but I've seen in the past.

Izzy got beat at his own game. Sean was patient and found the right time to throw. Obviously this is my personal opinion, I think Sean is better than alot of people think he is. He intentionally tries to make people believe he's dumb.

I think training with Pereira had something to do with it... The only person to ever dominate Izzy like that ( even tho he lost his last fight with him still has more wins over him) is Pereira. Strickland Really did have a "Rocky moment" ( rocky 3 to be exact) he trained with his former adversary to defeat a greater enemy ....
