This is fantastic Kent. I'm glad you revived this. There are so many interesting gems here that I will try to carry over. Thank you for another great lesson

Super lesson Kent! Don't downplay your own stride ability; you do it well. I've already told you how my mother was a stride pianist & teacher. My hands are smallish compared to hers, so I use the roll technique to execute 10ths to avoid striking adjacent notes. Yes, it takes much practice for sure. I'm thinking of the lady on the Lawrence Welk show who played fantastic stride while smiling at the camera the whole time! Keep 'em coming my friend!

Thanks for the comment. Jo Ann Castle from the LW show was a great stride player in the honky tonk tradition. Everyone on that show not only had to be very talented but had to have a great personality too. Thanks!

It takes a lot of patience to perfect the accuracy to progress beyond the basic 'bong-bing bong-bing', but you show us what can be achieved. Thank you Kent for returning us to this excellent lesson🚶

This tune has so many opportunities where you put in fills that i thought perhaps one day you could give us a breakdown of some of them. Thank you so much for all your help. I first discovered the diminished chord approach from your arrangement of All of Me.

This a great tutorial to watch over and over for gems. So much here! Particularly like the root and fifth alternating in the bass (at about 10min) with third and seventh chord shell on off beats.

I would like to politely disagree with Kent about doing Stride technique. He said you have to practice it a lot. I think you have to practice it lots of lot. I have used it to practice my scales since early on...and I'm still learning. BTW merci for you videos and for sharing your knowledge.

That's a good suggestion...and yes, stride and ragtime does take lots of practice to master. Check out Dick Hyman for one of the best still living. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BzcsArJYYfs.html

Is rag the same as stride?
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 6 месяцев назад
Ragtime is the more traditional style that Scott Joblin played and composed. If you play ragtime, it will give you a strong foundation in the stride style that you can apply to standard tunes.

How many times have I tried stride and failed...! I think it's the tenths that kill me as my hands are relatively small. The only stride I can play Ok is Maple Leaf Rag because it only uses octaves. Thanks for the lessons and the downloads Kent! I'll take it slow..!

My worst Technique...and correct I play finger style guitar and it's just not possible...it is limited to tunings and what key the bass is. On piano any Key is possible!
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 6 месяцев назад
Correct. Plus, we have the experience of Joplin who wrote it out for pianist to learn.

@@KentHewittpiano88 Your II V I is great. Your book is systematic yeah? I can play Bach Cmaj 846 Some Pinetop Fats and Blues a biy of Satin Doll 10'ths. But my brain likes to know stuff. Not random lessons. Recomend it? For context John Novello's book is great but it's also a lot of gibberish. Im thinking of getting rid of texts to charity shops starting afresh with a good Jazz method. You're in my Startup Menu on chrome. I can play 24 keys but so much is missing.
