Man that indira doesn’t have even a chip in her paintwork, I wonder how bad things were for her crew to surrender before firing a shot in anger I also wonder if there were ever false surrenders in the hope of luring in an enemy warship to point blank (similar to the ones we saw in the clone wars)

If the ship breakdown video was any indication, months of being stuck in a cramped & hot ship with no resupply likely did a number on crew morale.

It’s true the ship is far less damaged than we might expect, but there *is* some mysterious white gas leaking out of the port (screen right) engine module & the ship appears to be rolling slightly due to the uncontrolled thrust vector. If the engine was crippled by a lucky opening shot, there might not have been enough battle for much other damage to be incurred. There’s also the widespread morale issues that have already been mentioned.

After learning about the difficulties of being a crew member on an Indria class or probably any outrider. I imagine some battle star galactica esk story about how a string of defeats and being on the run from the CDF drained hope and spirits over time. Make me wonder what frontier was really fighting for freedom? Freedom from what was ostensibly their only life line was really an impossibility. Even if the average Centran saw the frontier as ungrateful or self centered by the time of the famine you can’t build a nation from nothing.

Yea, I mean, tbh both were caused by a lack of resources, the inability to expand, and, of course, control on certain populations. Honestly, I think the frontier war was just... ugh, mostly a horrible, pointless blood bath that is endangering humanity.

Yeah how would a starship “strike” its colors..? 🤔 Comm that they surrender and power down their systems..? Maybe theirs a switch on the IFF system that indicates surrender..?

Yeah, it doesn't make much sense to phease it that way. Given that historically striking your colours was the action of literarily lowering the flag from your mast. Beyond sounding cool to those who don't actually know what it means, it's kind of stupid

@@ZaraTheFemboy I don’t mind the use of the term.. it’s far more dramatic then just “the outrigger surrenders”.. Considering the Sojourn leans into its nautical age of sail motif, it does make sense for the setting.. It just brought up a thought, that we see ships getting captured by force in sci-fi settings all the time.. Just rarely see or hear how ships surrender and how they would let the attacker know.. Before being blown to bits. 😅

I mean, in the Honor Harrington novels, ships strike their colours by turning off their wedge (read: turn off what makes their ship go, while providing unpenetrable armour top and bottom). In the Alexis Carew novels, they turn off the lights that show the pattern of their national flag. For Sojourn? It could be removing the part of their tranponder ID that shows their flag of registry?

@@patrickdusablon2789 in The Expanse it was more practical, the act of turning off the fusion reactor. I figure it's some combination of transponder, and power/drive systems.

A realistic setting would probably see the surrendering ship unfurl their radiators. You can't really fight with large, flimsy glowing panels filled with liquid metal coolant extending out the sides of your ship, no matter what the situation is.

“Striking colors” means surrendering, and based on the Indria-class’s lore video, it’s likely this was a long-isolated Frontier ship surrendering itself to the Centrans (likely the first ship it’s seen in months) bc crew morale was at rock-bottom.
