This is great advice. You really helped me stop worrying about algae back when my pond was new! A pond just needs to go through an ugly duckling phase. lol I don't like using harsh chemicals in my aquariums, either. Back when I didn't know anything, I thought all those chemicals were great, but I didn't really understand the importance of the food web, or what it is made up of. There's no telling how many good things I killed.

I do the same with hydrogen peroxide. Just switch off the pumps or pause them as you would to with those jebao pumps and then they sutomatically turn back on after 15 minutes works wonderful to remove the black stuff on rocks and string anlgae in your falls

Same. String algae thick everywhere and we'll go into frozen winter here soon enough. I've removed it several times, comes back. Despite heavy plants with aggressive feeders.

you are right Kev. I am impatient, so it was hard to watch the algae growing initially and ruining the look of my pond, but sure enough, as you say, just give it time to evolve and it all falls into balance soon enough. Great video again, thanks!

Patience is the name of the game, let your pond go through all the stages of maturity and you’ll be rewarded with something special. This can take a couple of weeks or a few months depending on your pond. Thank you Kev for all your advice, we now have a raised pond to really enjoy, oh and the fish say thank you too 😀

Another great video!! I usually only use chemicals to get rid of the string algae the first time on a new pond set up. After that, I may use hydrogen peroxide if it gets out of control due to weather related issues, but that's it. I find that a pond usually finds its happy place, by the third year, provided you don't keep adding more bio load to the mix. I too approach my ponds the way you do. Once established, they need little to no effort to maintain. Thank Kev, for another great video!!!

Great to hear 👍 Every pond is different and it really can take years for the pond to fully mature. But once it does it’s ridiculously easy to maintain.

Thanks Kev. Not sure if you have heard of it, but I recommend using Splosht. I use it on an as needed basis. Now my pond has fully settled (5 years old) I dont use it, but it was great in the early days for clearing up green water and string algae naturally.
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 9 месяцев назад
Yes I’ve tried splosht. It’s just a form of bacteria. There’s many different brands available. I think they are all pretty much the same. It’s a very easy to use product though, no measuring, just chuck it in.

Every pond is different. It’s like health/ weight loss. How heavy was the person to begin with? How strict is their diet? Do they stick to exercise? So the pond looks like this: How much nutrient was in the pond during construction? Is nutrient still being added in a way that it accumulates quicker than it is consumed? If so what are you doing to reduce nutrient loads? Have a plan, execute it over a long period and get results. Same in fitness same in ponds. Just keep doing the right things eventually, good things happen 👍

I finished my pond about 3 months ago (~1000 gallons with ~300 gallon bog) After about 1 month I started to get string algae. I was worried it would get terrible, but then suddenly it went away. What I realized the algae going away coincided with was me introducing aquatic plants from a nearby pond. The plants died out, but more importantly I now have a thriving snail population that came along for the ride with the plants. I don't know if this will be good or bad long term for the pond since I know snails can be voracious and may end up killing anything I try to plant. But I figure if they haven't decimated the plant population where I transplanted from it can't be too bad...guess we'll fined out. In the meantime I have clear water again as New England winter sets in, figuring out the plants will be a problem to worry about in the spring.

Thank you very much. Can I ask what type of Hydrogen Peroxide (ie strength/concentration) you use, and how you apply to your waterfall or spillway rocks?
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 9 месяцев назад
3% strength. I put it in a squirty bottle, turn the pumps off and spray it directly onto the algae. I turn the pumps back on after 1/2hr.

I’m building my first pond at the moment, which all your videos have helped massively, my intake bay in 1m2 area with a olive barrel for clean out, im in the process of building the bog and rocking in the pond, my bog is going to be connected to the pond via a 4m stream (about 40-50 cm wide), would I be best having 2 pumps one for the bog and a separate one for the stream so that I have the correct flow, or should I just go with a single pump and y valve it off almost like over the bog as well as under, I’m just thinking the single pump will go the easiest route which is over the bog rather than through it, but just wondered what your thoughts were. ~7000l pond (5x3m) & 1.6m2 bog I was thinking 2 variable flow pumps so I can tweak the flow, get efficiency. Appreciate any views, thanks
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 10 месяцев назад
I think two pumps is the easiest. It costs a little extra due to the piping but it gives you way more flexibility in flow rates and I find that in the long run that will save you on electricity as you’ll be able to tweak the flow to give you good results at low energy consumption. Hope that helps 👍

What are the best fish options to consider for a tropical weather, a pond at a a size of big bathtub that gets partial sun.

Please note, its south east asian tropical weather condition. I am looking to buy comet lengthy tailed gold that looks like koi, or something that looks good. I am unsure which is suitable for weather and partial sun conditions
@Ozponds
@Ozponds 10 месяцев назад
I’d go something small and simple like guppies, nice to look at, very active, hangout at the surface. But your options are so many as long as the fish are small. Nothing too big in a bathtub pond.
