A quick comparison and overview of three types of grid tie inverters: a String Inverter by Fronius, a String Inverters with DC Optimizers by SolarEdge and a Micro Inverter by Enphase.
String inverters are used when wiring multiple solar panels in a series string to the inverter. Advantages include ease of install and tend to be the least expensive inverter option.
String Inverters with seperate DC Optimizers that are installed behind each solar panel, and connected by MC4 connectors, are then brought in strings of up to 5,250 watts down into the integrated DC Disconnect in the inverter. Advantages include individually managed solar panels and individual panel monitoring.
Micro Inverters connect to each panel and do all inverting at the panel level. Wire up to 17 micro inverters in series and then the cables will run down directly into the AC breaker box. Advantages include ease of install, panel level monitoring, panel level invertering, and it is very expandable.

MLPE is really a GREAT tecnology!!! Not just in the matters of increasing the energy yield but also in matters of security!! I've been working with solar edge inverters since 2018 and with microinverters, specially the ones of APsystems, since 2017! Great tecnology indeed. +marjomjom The best inverter for your system really depends on your situation. Micro inverters and DC Optimizers are great for situations with variable shading or solar panels facing different directions. String inverters are great for consistently sunny locations.

+marjomjom i bought 25 of them, 5 went bad in 2 years....looked around and found many others having the same issue....electronics do not like dirt and heat...i believe the amount of heat buildup by the solar panels as well as the heat coming from the shingles possibly played as the culprit....good idea, but very bad durability

ibezag0 Ok thanks, I searched enphase micro inverters m215 and m250 and look promising with 25 yrs warranty. I live in Hawaii with unpredectable weather, sunny @the beach next thing you know its raining.

+ibezag0 There were reliability issues with the first couple of models, but they resolved those problems a while back and have been much more reliable with very few failures. In the off chance of a failure, Enphase will pay for an installer to go onsite and install any warranty replacements if needed.

I always learn from you. Thank you for these videos. What about central inverters? Are they used in stand-alone applications? Could we know the maximum power rating of each type of PV inverters such as: central, string, multi string and micro?

Central inverters are for larger systems than we tend to get involved in, but there is a lot of good info online about them. For example, solar.schneider-electric.com/products/central-inverters/

You stated in the video that for string inverters, all panels need to be matched. But what about a string inverter system that uses optimizers? Would I still need to have the same types of panels when using optimizers with a string inverter?

+Shun Wong That is the advantage of an optimizer, like the SolarEdge system, you don't need to match the solar panels. I was referring to string inverters without optimizers, like the Fronius shown.

Very nice explained. I like it very much but there 2 questions unanswered: 1. What about the Inverter with DC Optimizer if you have a system over 5250W? Does bigger Inverter exists for higher W or have you to split the system and install a second inverter? 2. You mentioned it is possible to use different types of solar panels with the micro inverter. Is this also the case with the DC optimizer version? Thank you very much for your (hopefully soon) response!

SolarEdge now makes inverters up to 11.4kW. If you need more than that, you would install multiple inverters. DC Optimizers isolate the panels from the others, so you can also have mismatched panels with the Optimizers.

SolarEdge DC Optimizers must be used with the SolarEdge inverter. There are other brands of optimizers, like Tigo, that can be used with other inverters.

It depends on the Optimizer. SolarEdge optimizers can only be used with SolarEdge inverters. But Tigo Energy DC Optimizers can be used with any brand inverter.

Rev John O'Toole The only way to use a micro inverter with a battery based system is through AC Coupling. The micro inverter has to see the grid, or in the case of AC coupling, a micro-grid, in order to turn on. Proprietary is more expensive. How do you charge batteries with AC output of microinverters. Need an additional conversion that wastes power?

I need grid tied but want backup power if grid down. Why can't you just turn off main utility breaker at the meter and use solar and or battery to still have power?

All it takes is one person to forget to turn off the main breaker, and a lineman can get hurt. Hybrid inverters allow you to connect to both the main panel for when power is up and a critical load panel when power is down. Once installed, it's all automatic.

OK, I bought a ic 2000 by gopower and this thing only seems to be able to handle the job of powering up batteries, and to be used as an inverter to convert DC to AC power. While a battery back up grid tie inverter will supply AC power to the RV & grid with a backup for when the RV is mobile, isn't it more logical to have this grid tie inverter w/ battery backup then a product like this gopower ic 2000? This gopower product seems to be worthless when parked except to keep the batteries charged.

Which connection is the best if you are going to use more than one microinverter ?series or parallel?

You have no choice, microinverters are wired with their special connectors in parallel. Wiring in parallel adds current, keeping it at 240V. If they were wired in series, the voltage would increase. That would be very bad.

The same model is the best solution. Mismatched solar panels can pull the higher ones down to the lower ones. Different brands and different models may not be matched up as closely as the same model, so you will experience more losses. While it will work, it won't work as well.

The manufacturer doesn't matter as long as the specs are right on. Let's say you took two panels from different manufacturers and you put your multimeter on DC volts and they both say 36.8V. Then you switch to amps and you short the panels one at a time....both facing directly at the sun on a cloudless day and one reads 8.4A and the other reads 8.38A... By all means, USE them together! Don't listen to people trying to scare you into buying more solar panels.

We agree, but it is hard to find two brands with the exact same IV curve, which gives you the best performance. The closer matched they are, the better it performs.

Hello, I am planning to put solar panels very soon. It will be around 150 m from my home , it is the only place I will have almost no schade. I have an electric car and will have a second one next year. I was planning to transport the electricity in DC to my house and have the possibility to charge my cars in DC before I go into the inverter . Until now I don’t find anything about this possibility on line. Could you give me any info or direct me to somebody who could help me. Many thanks.

I assume you are talking about the Fronius string inverter? Because they have separate MPPT functions, you can put different panels on each string.

Micro inverters, like all grid tied inverters, must see a grid connection to work, so they cannot be used offgrid.

If you have a string inverter and 1 panel gets shaded it will not bring down the total string. You will lose power (and voltage) in the string and the string will work normal for the rest. This is when mppt-scan function is enabled (optitrac with SMA). (without the U/I curve will be affected causing losses) Strings are to be designed as long as possible to prevent the string going to low in voltage to operate when shading occurs. It is inadequate to suggest the whole string will be affected. Enphase does not compensate the installer to replace the inverters, the risk is big that Enphase will go out of business in 25 years and the installer even quicker. I would not advise Enphase or micro inverters, only use them if there is no other option.

Good timing. I just did a video demonstrating the effect of shading panels in series, as well as the affect of wiring mismatched panels with different voltages in parallel. The point is that without separate MPPT ports on a string inverter, which is fairly new, when you shade one string, and another string is wired in parallel, that one shaded panel will affect all of the strings. This issue has been greatly improved with the multiple MPPT ports in string inverters. Enphase does have a program where they will pay an installer to go to replace a warranty replacement micro inverter.

I was talking about a MPPT scan function and not multiple Mppt's in the inverter. According to Enphase : enphase.com/sites/default/files/Enphase-Warranty-US-CA.pdf ------------------------------------------------------------ The Limited Warranty covers a replacement unit but does NOT include labor costs related to (1) un-installing the product or (2) if applicable, re-installing a repaired or replacement product. ------------------------------------------------------------ This is from the US warranty, i am in Europe and here also there is NO program to cover the costs. Always a good idea to read that carefully.

@@KetansaCreatesArt I dont see any new developments on this. Micro inverters have higher output these days but they are the same for the rest. The decision depends on local regulations. We dont have DC restrictions in The Netherlands like in some parts of the USA. So my choice depends on the circumstances at the project site. If there is no need to use optimizers of micro inverters i rather use a string inverter. It is easier in maintenance and much cheaper.
