Mike Smedley I love that stealth rod. Can that be used for tog? I need a sturdy tog rod with sensitivity

They are awesome rods. They are Probably not the best for Tog, that slow action will make subtle bites harder to detect. A super sensitive fast tip is pretty important for those guys.

Great detailed video and too the damn point. No filler bs or price comparing or telling us how many $500 rods you got. You told us what you recommend and what will work. Period ! Agree with ya totally on the cast net. Spend the money where you should, not on handles for baitcasters. Thanks again, wish I was a shad farmer and salesman . I'd sellout daily !! Lol. Thanks again

Thanks for the great video. I have randomly bank fished on and off my whole life but got back into fishing almost weekly since buying my first boat last year. Thanks again.

I used Calusa nets for years, last year I got my first Tim Wade net, love it! I can attest to the Creekbank bait tanks. I have had a 50 gallon Creekbank filter tank for at least 10 years, they went out of business for a few years but a couple years ago a guy purchased the molds and put it back in production. Those tanks have a great filter and aeration system, they are simple but work perfect.

Hey brother!! I’ve used them too. They are a lot better than they used to be. Back in the 90’s they were pretty terrible. Just taking it out of the bucket was awkward. They would spring out like a full Christmas tree. The Barracuda nets are high quality, but I’m using the Black Pearl INVI series now. That new lead line design is incredible. They are pricey but worth it.

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS yeah if I was a big time striper man i would have a nice one like that but I just have a bass boat and go catch a 20 or so shad every now and then for me and my dad to go drift for stripers. Turn boat sideways and let wind drift us up in Bull run or Gills creek. Normally where we do it at. I live on Sml and I looooove striper fishing. But normally im chasing bass. Getting ready to get rod holders set up on my boat to pull boards with or whatever. We use balloons to drift our baits away from my boat too. When there less then 15 foot deep.

Awesome video man. Thank you for making a freshwater video! A couple questions. What box is that you have your umbrella rigs in? I haven’t found a good way to stow them but that looks nice. Also what rod (line power action) and reel do you pull umbrella rigs with? I do a lot of live bait and haven’t done much umbrella rig trolling. Looking forward to the next freshwater instructional video!

You've commented on the knives repeatedly and it is on my to-do list before the shad season kicks in here. I've already got multiples located at my center console on both sides as well as on me, but not everyone is as prepared and quick to think. Pretty sure I'm going to go with a batch of Morakniv Craftline Basic knives that are low cost and they have a high vis orange handle option that makes them super easy to locate. Fellow victim of Minn Kota and feel your pain there and still enduring the sting of the Rip Off model. The good news is I learned to steer clear of Mercury motors after watching my dad fight them as a kid.

Awesome video, Mike. The fishing for stripers here in the Chesapeake tributaries has been slow to non-existent. After watching this video I'm ready to head to Conowingo Reservoir to try the fresh water variety. Is there a difference in the taste? Also, as a novice with a limited budget, I use the ugly sticks with either Penn or Shimano spinning reels. Spinners are easier for me to spool. However, as you talked about, my striper rods have bigger reels on them. I actually splurged on reels because a large bluefish once taught me a hard lesson about cheap reels.
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 4 года назад
Ha! I know what you mean about Bluefish. I have not noticed a difference in the taste, but definitely stick to the smaller size as the larger tend to load up on toxins from the lakes. There is nothing wrong with using spinning reels for this, just stick to larger spoil sizes like you have so your not stuck with braid. Gotta use mono for live bait!!

@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 4 года назад
Yes! Great question! You won’t need all of the downlines for one thing. Fish in Saltwater leave when it gets hot so they rarely go very deep in comparison to a few lake. You won’t need the trolling motor quite as much and can even get away with out one most of the time. I would also stick with the largest of the rod reel combos and avoid the ABUs if possible. You can grab 4-6 Accurate Fury/Striper Stealth combos and NEVER look back. 😁😁 Thanks again for the question!!

One last thing, Is there anyone else you would recommend to watch on youtube that does more lake striper?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 4 года назад
I really like the ALL PRO butterfly jigs. The WANG and ULTRA jigs are sweet. They fall flat like a leaf when Totally slack. Also called slow pitch jigs. Haven’t used them on Lanier, but I guarantee they work. Drop deep through the fish to the bottom if its clean, yank up hard and crank a few times fast yanking in between. They simulate a dying bait swimming up off the bottom but keeps floating back down. Vary speed and yank. I like the 100gram the best, but I also use the 150 and 160. Www.allprotacklebox.com.

Could all of this be applied to saltwater striper fishing too? And I have a penn battle 6000 with 20lb mono would that be fine with like a 30lb leader? And what's your input on a penn warfare 15lw which has 15lbs of drag spooled with braid with a long leader matched up to braid line let's say 30lb braid?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 4 года назад
ABSOLUTELY! We use a lot of the same tactics and gear for both. I like all of the Penn spinners. I think you got it figured. If you casting artificials I would go with braid. Mono for live and cut bait. But you can mix and match if need be. If you use braid on both use a softer rod for bait.

I fish almost every single day and night for trophy stripers, and routinely catch 30 and 40 lbers from shore. Im retired now so i spend most of my time fishing for them. No boat or kayak. I'm usually out on the rivers, lakes and under dams at 3 am when there are few people around. I live where there are 60 lb monsters. I've been using giant swimbaits and killing them lately, like castaics, huge fin S, redfins and huddlestons, also using super top of the line rods and reels, saltigas, accurates, avets, loomises, st croix and fenwicks and lamiglas rods. No chinese shit. I mostly use Eglass rods I have a few customs too. Im wanting that 60lber. Working hard, doin my homework , putting in my hours to get him. I never fish cut bait or live bait and never have killed or kept a striper in 60 years of catching them from cape cod, Montauk, Chesapeake bay, outer banks, tennesse rivers and dams, all the way to California San Francisco Bay and the Colorado River. Stripers are my passion. Lately I'm on a buy American only tackle craze, I'm buying up $500 rods and reels like there is no tomorrow. IOnly usa made or Japanese made. Hooks, swivels and snaps. Heavy 50 lb braid is all I use and 40lb flouro leader. I'm not losing a 50 pounder with excuses, line snapped, hook straightened, reel failed. You'd be surprised how much good quality American stuff is out there now. Eagle claw has a whole line of new usa quality hooks. Sounds like you are totally committed to these fish too....I like that. Wat area of country are you in?

Nathan Enfinger Herring are fine in a square tank, but Shad struggle in a square tank. I used a rectanglular tank for Herring for years as a kid with no problems, but Gizzard Shad and Threadfins do much better in tank with rounded corners and a little current.

On the accurate fury reel is single speed ok? Which gear ratio 4.1 or 6.1, and what size?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 3 года назад
In a single speed I have ONLY 4:1 for bait fishing. High speed is a mistake unless you need a locked drag and high speed all the time for a specific reason. I like 2-speeds because I take lesser experienced people out sometimes and the very low 3:1 helps on biggger fish. The low gear single speed is perfect for most Striper fishermen. If I never took kids fishing I would only use 4:1.

Thanks very much. Your videos are awesome and very helpful. Final question on the Accurate fury- what size- 400 500 or 600 ?

I love the 400 regular or 500 Narrow with 30lb mono.

Can anyone explain what he means by “down lines”?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
Its when you drop suspended lines straight down with weight above the hook. You either drift while doing this or move slowly with your trolling motor. 👍👍

Ever tried the avet reels?
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS 4 года назад
I Have, they are way better than an Ambassador but can’t compete with an Accurate. They have clunky dawgs where Accurates use high power anti reverse bearing. They are good for a $180 reel, but if you will go over $200 I would recommend the accurate Fury. Accurate Fury Reel 400 Regular amzn.to/2XTvZZK

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS mike I’m using sea striker down planers to troll buck tails ... using sizes 2 and 3 . How deep you think they are going trolling at 2.5mph

@@chrisspivey8068 Probably 20 ft deep at 125 feet back depending on bucktail weight. Set it there and run your boat in 20 ft of water and watch to see if they tick the bottom. Adjust from there👍👍👍

Those rod's are over $100. Where are you finding these for under 100? I see them for $130. And level winds are fantastic. Never had one fail on any reel in 60 years of fishing.
@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS
Level winds don’t really fail in their mechanics. Problems arise when the line is coming off of the spool on the left while the level wind is on the right, “mis-tracking”. Under heavy drag, the line buries and snaps. Most people never know it happened. When a hook is pulled or line is broken near the hook, they usually don’t think that the problem was mis-tracking slowing the spool when trying to pay out drag. It’s a big reason why you will never see a level-wind on a Tuna reel. They have their places. I use them regularly when casting plugs and jigs, but they have a few downsides when smooth drag is needed. Largemouth guys love them because they keep drags locked up. This video was several years ago, way before prices took of. Thanks for the comment brother!! 👍

Its all relative. I’ve had these for 7 HARD years and they snip like butter and weigh the same as plastic. They don’t pull your pants down like the $300 Van Staal pliers. In that same 7 years I have gone thru over a dozen $20 pliers that were crappy right out of the box.

@@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS they chase the alwives up to the fish ladders early in the season. Which the brackish rivers have a bunch of natural eels. There are some power plants that use the river for cooling or something and they exhaust the hot water and in spring time I've caught no lie 300 stripers in 5 hours. All schoolies but literally every cast. I'm not trying to brag at all because you guys catch way bigger and more then I do.
