My '05 Dyna FXDCI has over 20,000 miles and is leaking from the shifter shaft seal. After reviewing a couple of videos on the loose lever, I just put torque on a short Allen wrench and it seemed tight, so I was afraid the bushing was warn as well as the seal. After sleeping on your warning and advice, I put better light on the shaft, and it was NOT moving with the wiggly lever. Then I put an adjustable wrench on the Allen to loosen it, to check closer. The bolt came loose with a snap, and backed out stiffly, as if it had been set with thread locker. The lever was plenty loose on the shaft, with the bolt backed off. I added a small flat washer under the head, which had very little engagement on the arm, and some medium thread locker. It all tightened up nicely. Thanks for the insight and timely warning!
When I have the primary off for a drive belt swap I use red Loctite on the splines and the screw. I threw away my older original aluminum arm and use a later steel Dyna arm instead. Many years, many miles, no slippage.
Hi Bob, love all your vids man, very effective. I have a 2005 15 anniversary , fatboy and the front drive pulley was leaking oil( putting my hand behind the main pulley)-so my indy removed the primary cover and replaced all needed seals when cover is off. No more leaks...but my shifter arm on the tranny has like 2" of free play? just noticed this, by video! its been like that for 10 years, since I had the bike? if the tranny (shifter shaft-pual was shot, wouldn't my indy change it?????? ) I know for a fact the little plastic black round bushings, by the foot lever are loose!!!!! -again I have like 2" of play up and down on the shifter and a little 1/2" lateral( buy I think that is normal for use, no???)please Help, Bob-thank you again, in advance!! shifting is fine but -when hot, from a roll, I can never go into first, without a good slam, and then there is no noise( notifying me I'm in gear) ,it never jumps out of gear though-weird bob!!! ps-I never adjusted shifter rod AT ALL!!!!
Hi David. You will need to remove your inner primary in order to replace your transmission shift arm. It is not too involved, however you will need a couple of large sockets and a couple of specialty tools to complete the repair correctly. www.fixmyhog.com/video/softail-rear-belt-removal-part-i-002181/ www.fixmyhog.com/video/softail-rear-belt-replacement-part-ii-002938/ www.fixmyhog.com/video/stripped-harley-shifter-shaft-009555/
