Stripped Wheel Lock Key Frozen Stuck Wheel Lug Removal On BMW Using The AGA Wheel Lock Removal Tool

This should have been an easy brake job except...I found a stripped wheel lock key and was unable to remove the rims. In this video I go over how to remove a BMW wheel lock key using an AGA wheel lock removal tool. This type of failure often happens when the wheel locks are not torqued correctly. An impact gun or torque stick should never be used on a wheel lock. They should always be tightened by hand and then torqued with a torque wrench. Most dealers will charge about a half hour for each stuck on wheel lock. Dealers also have a master set of wheel locks so if you lose your wheel lock they can match it up with the set and be able to help you order a replacement wheel lock with the parts department.

Did loads of those back in the days at the dealer, usually takes me 5 minutes if that. Didn't have to use that tool, initially a guy stayed back till 9pm to drill out, but he devised a better method in the end. You need: 19mm twist socket. (pretty sure of it, Wurth's set works great). 23mm bihex chrome socket (you need to get allot of those cheapies to see which one slots into the bolt wheel (this is for removing the ring). 1/2" breaker bar. Hammer. Get a suitably sized 23mm, smack it into the spinning bolt. Attach breaker bar and straighten the handle flush with the socket and yank up and down on it. The ring should break off. Smack in the 19mm socket twist socket (aim well). Breaker bar the 19mm twist socket and it should come off. You can however tape off the wheel, but really there is no point, all advised damage possibilty. Wheels are not a common target in most countries, just replace with standard M14x1.25 bolts torque spec 140nm.

Any advice on lug bolts that are just seized? I've tried heat and 36" breaker bar.....no luck. I plan on trying the tool he recommended at the end of the video, but any advice would be appreciated.
@AskTheCarExperts
@AskTheCarExperts 2 года назад
@@nkereeneyo1063 Hello Nkere, For lugs that are seized you should try to shock with a hammer by putting the socket in and hitting the back of the socket very hard. This can sometimes break the tension. Then it's all about leverage and a long breaker bar. I use the EZ red 3/4 extendable ratchet with a 3/4 to 1/2 impact adapter.

Were you doing this work using your garage at home? Looks like you have another BMW up on a lift but like most garages you're limited to an 8' ceiling. If that's correct, what brand lift are you using; do you like it? I'm looking for a similar set-up because anything is better than putting a car on jack stands and crawling underneath it. Thanks for your videos.

This video was made at home and I do have a lift installed. I am also limited in height so I opted to use the Danmar M6 lift that is a half lift. I can put my E46 up pretty high but X vehicles is a bit tough to get under but for suspension work it is a good choice.

Had this happen today, thanks for sharing the detailed video. The mcguard key stripped on the security lug, it was very tight and I was at it with a moderate sized breaker bar. I will toss the rest of these Hyundai supplied wheel locks when I can get this one off, the only thing they are good at is keeping their owners from changing their brakes! Getting to the point of not wanting to to tire shops. All they do is hammer fasteners and lug nuts with the impact! Mcguard says their key is proprietary/custom per the code, do you think the Hyundai dealer can get these faster or has them in stock? I figure they must have master sets of these as they work on them all day long, going to try to call a few tomorrow - can't wait a week to get them from the vendor. Thanks!

@AskTheCarExperts 2 года назад
Hi Brian, Where I work we have a master set. Most dealers have a master set. However, if it was overtightened I find at my shop we end up breaking the new wheel lock key. The AGA tool is then used. You can use a Dremel to cut the ring off and then a lug extractor. But this is more labor and time intensive. Sorry to hear you ran into this issue. Let me know how you make out. Also I have a giveaway running for a scan tool at my website www.askthecarexperts.com if your interested. Best of luck!

@AskTheCarExperts

@@briancnc That's great news. You only need a lug remover. I recommend the snap on brand for this type of job. Or you may be able to grab it with a 12 point but depending on how tight the lug it it may just strip out. I have a snap on set that gets tighter as you remove it with a spiral socket. Works great.

@@AskTheCarExperts 12 point socket (3/4") on the nut got it off after 2 or 3 tries going on deeper each time. I couldn't get the socket off in a vice but not bad for a $5 socket! I also ordered a kit of the spiral lug nut removal sockets. How do you remove those once you get the nut off?

Another method is to use a diamond grinder and grind the ring off. An air hammer also can get the ring off but it can get messy. I have done both before the AGA tool.

@@team-tan-vlog4095 This tool is sold by AGA tools. One alternative to buying the kit is if you have the box from the wheel lock kit there is a page with the number to order the correct wheel lock from your local dealer. Or most dealers have a back up set they use and they can either remove all the locks so you can switch to lugs or identify the lock number for you to order.

Unfortunately the generic removal tool does not work on the BMW lock due to the spinning ring. The head has to be removed to then access the main head behind it. But they do sell the kit on amazon now for lost keys. You can get a whole set for lower than a new key from BMW. amzn.to/3ENFXP1

Damage wheel nut key caused by the garage monkey using an air gun to put the nuts back. As a mobile tyre fitter in the UK these wheel nuts do my head in when they've been completely over-tightened. However, these aren't as bad as the Peugeot, and now Vauxhall, 4 pin locking wheel nuts. You know, the ones where the pin falls out or the garage monkey rounds the pins so they just slip off. These things should be banned!

LOL 😆 Ya they can be a royal pain. Had to drill some out before or air hammer them up to finally get them out. Another trick is to pry on the wheel to help release the tension on the lug.
