This is a start of a series on stoking a 63 Corvair 102 hp engine to 164 cu in. This video will explain all the parts that need to be changed or considered when attempting to increase the stroke on your early corvair engine. Thank you for watching and consider subscribing and if you want check out the links below to some of the parts I always put on my Corvair engines.

This is a trip down memory lane for me. I've built two Corvair engines out of mostly junk parts. A 110 for my 62 Greenbrier, and I converted a 110 64 Monza automatic to a 140 with a 4 spd. Both ran great and were fun to drive.

One of the most underrated flat-six engines! Some were even used in planes. Today even seized engines will cost you a fortune. So, stay strong.

converted 145 to 164 in 1970. just ground the case and barrels for clearance. Also installed a turbo that I bought at a swap meet. bought new crank and rods at a chevy dealer. pistons and rings from JC Whitney. parts were cheap back then

A Turbo is in the end plans for this motor but the price of parts has delayed that. Just aiming to get this car back on the road. Then upgrading the top end for the turbo down the road when the wallet allows.

You should start with a 64-69 110 hp engine

@@RyansSpeedShop Just remember that you will have to do a lot of work to get them on the Corvair but they do work.

Is there someplace you can get a bigger cam other than Clarks I checked there and their cam prices are pretty expensive ???
@RyansSpeedShop
@RyansSpeedShop Год назад
I know a lot of people run isky cams. They are still high but I think any cam for a corvair will be high nowadays. I have bought some from ebay before they are normally used or a regrind but a new set of lifters and they broke in fine

@@RyansSpeedShop thanks. I'm looking for an ot-10 the old parts number was 38800r. I bought a light sport experimental airplane equipped with a corvair conversion engine in the engine log says the original owner took the 110 horsepower cam out and put in a 95 horsepower cam to get more torque at lower RPM. Torque is wonderful. I live in high elevation I need every horsepower I can get. In my opinion the 95 horsepower cam swap was unwise. I need all the air I can get into those cylinders at 3200 RPM. I plan to be going up in high elevations over 8500 ft in elevation sometimes over 9000. The prop for this aircraft application was cut for climbing low speed torque it's got plenty of prop for climbing out! I need horsepower. The corvair produces about 75% of the available stock horsepower at 3200 RPM. Why one would take 75% of 15 horsepower off the table is beyond me. No such thing as too much horsepower in an airplane. The engine is a 1967 110 horsepower unfortunately has the smog heads which are apparently open chambered and subject to pregnition knock. 9. 25 compression ratio putting forced air into the engine as per my plan is not in the picture. there's not enough room left to pack the cylinders safely. pre-ignition will happen. I'm looking for 100 horsepower at 3200 RPM. Although I can over spin this prop up to 3500 RPM maximum tip speed. Do you think the cam in a 140 natural aspirating will get me closer to that 100 horsepower goal.?? There are some spec charts on the horsepower torque curve on the internet but they're so grainy they're hard to read. In addition I have a 1960 and a 1962 engine in the cars. they're not ideal for conversion but I probably can take the 60 heads an machine them for the 165 cylinders. The the issue is quench area and pre ignition problems. So rather than go to the expense finding 110 non-smog heads different Pistons and cam I want to get as much useful cam CFM and carburetor as possible at 3200 RPM Your experiences and thoughts are appreciated.
@RyansSpeedShop
@RyansSpeedShop Год назад
If that motor is gonna live at 3200rpm I'm with you on the hp problem. I wonder if you could experiment with an adjustable cam gear to bring the hp curve down kinda like the opposite of what they did with the 140 pg cranks except they pushed the curve up for more torque. California corvair has regrouped 889 cams for sale that might be close to the ot10 cam specs
@tomstulc9143
@tomstulc9143 Год назад
@@RyansSpeedShop thank you kindly. And I never thought of the adjustable cam gear and I just recommended that to a fellow who's trying to get more go out of his 68 Fe Ford. Duh never crossed my mind. Thanks a bunch.

So, basically just start with a late model engine?

Have you figured out what your rod ratio might be close too yet? Or piston manufacturer
@RyansSpeedShop
@RyansSpeedShop 2 года назад
The stock 145 ratio was 1.82 and now the ratio is going to be 1.61. We ended up getting the hi-tech pistons that Clark's Corvair offers for the late model

Good video. Stroking usually means crank mods but it sounds like you are swapping to a LM crank & most other parts to get to 164 CID. Why not just get a 164 engine to rebuild? Plentiful these days.
@RyansSpeedShop
@RyansSpeedShop Год назад
Yes the plan was origionally to pick up a 164 while driving and rebuild it but once that motor went out we just ended up buying the lm crank and other parts needed to do the swap and figured if anyone else needed to do the same they could get an idea as to what they need to do
