It's the final hurdle, I can finish the cabinet and and reassemble the radio but some of the hardware is rusted and the speaker is very damaged, what can I do to recover them?

Wow, the things they built when quality came first, performance was tweaked to the best and before cheap plastic and robot made cases were used to cut prices and quality went down to will it work, instead of make it sound great. Thanks for the wonderful video, I do so enjoy watching you do such quality work. I was once a gunsmith in my earlier days. Occasionally I would send a hand gun off to have it nickel platted. The center I sent it to was just down the road a few dozen miles and they were not normally doing guns but repairing bumpers and auto trim on older vehicles. The way they went about the processes was to first polish down the gun to bare metal then clean it using some acid dunk then they would copper plate the whole thing, polish the copper and again dunk to clean, then into the nickel tank and electro plate the copper with the nickel. According to the fellow who ran the place, nickel plated on copper better then on steel, and copper platting stuck to the steel much better then pure nickel. The folks who got their nickel platted revolvers back were very happy with the results and I could get it done at about half the price as other smiths at the time.

Really 👍 like this 📻 radio. Didn't 👌 know you were going to do a part 4, but that's GREAT. I did 👍 like the cherrywood color it originally was, but I also became used to the second color you made it. 👍 Yes, it has the usual dial cord and dial light, but the speaker appears to be field coil. Sure wish this 🌎 world would go back to tube 📻 radios 👍 like this, even if the year is 2039, instead of 1939, such as if this 📻 radio is a 1939. Could then celebrate a hundred years of tube 📻 radio. Your friend, Jeff.

So I watched the whole thing. I,m impressed with your commitment to excellence. I don,t know how you summon the patience and perseverence to redo things. If I had to strip off that first veneer, If I had to strip off that first finnish etc. I would just about cry. Or maybe a deep depression. But I think you did the right thing with the finish. It's beautiful! I kinda knewn there's always been radio repair guys. They were around even when my dad was young. Thats one thing, but I never heard of a phonograph repair guy. I remember phongraphs when I was growing up, but I never knew or heard of anyone that repaired them. Given that phonogaphs are now obsolete, your profession in this feild must be rare. You're really saving history and it's always a pleasure to see these things working and functioning as they used to.

Hi Tyrone, the cabinet gave me grief but I needed to persevere even if it takes a few tries. I think repair shops could do the record players as well. Hi Samuel, it's a long story. the veneer looked good to start with, when I applied the finish to it it started to ripple, I noticed the veneer had not glued down properly in some small areas on the bend. I stripped off the red lacquer and ironed the veneer down and it seemed to stick again. I sanded it flat and it rippled again when I applied the finish the second time and that's how it stayed 🤦‍♂️🙄😯

Superb work again Dave.. I'm so glad you lightened the colour.. The first colour reminded , (not in a good way !), of the better half's 'cello' . Fortunately it's a phase that has ended, along with me trading it in against a American Chet Atkins Gretsch 6120 which is a nice shade of orange that is slightly lighter than of their President. We have a heat wave here in Blighty and you could fry an egg on the windowsill. A perfect excuse for the old codger I am to stay safe indoors and watch your video..I'm and Englishman but don't have a 'mad' dog just a.... ...No I'd better not say it !

Great Stuff David, as always. Loved the nickel plating on the hinges. I'm sure you'll get that lid to cooperate before long. I know you wouldn't want another UNIC ROYAL mocking you daily. ha ha Best wishes and stay safe, Jerry

For reproducing old lettering I've grown really fond of Inkscape's "Redraw Bitmap" function. It'll turn any old scan into a vector image (clean black & white) that you can scale pretty much indefinitely and print in perfect quality (or engrave on a laser cutter or cut on a vinyl plotter). If you zoom in and spend some time tweaking the letters you can even edit out any imperfections. It should work great on the clear plastic, probably not so much on the logo from the case because that's very low contrast against the dark timber but it might even be possible to get that vectorised. That way you get an absolutely perfect copy of the original font!

HI Ragnar8504, thanks for that information. The bigger problem is getting it from the PC onto a legible high contrast platform 🤔

What a pity you can only give one like! This episode is worth more. Never seen such a speaker repair before. And then, the nickel plating. David, you really care for originality! And, eventually, you decided you don't like the color. Tell you what: I didn't like it, too. Ten thumbs up!

Thanks for the 10 thumbs up Otto. Sounds like a lot of people didn't like the colour 😄

Hi My Messy Lab, thank you. It was my first attempt at plating and I was surprised it went so well, particularly as I pretty much used stuff around the house. Good luck with you efforts 👍🙂

You saved it! I hated that redish color and I was waiting to see if David was going to disappoint me for the first time. Well you didn't, it looks great (and a period correct now) BRAVO! And the sound is amazing for such a small speaker! Perhaps a chamfer on the hinge screws so they fit flush and maybe a bit more lacquer on the front so the transfer edge is hidden. Perfection is just a few steps away!
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 4 года назад
Thank you Nicholas. I'm glad I changed the colour, it looks much better. The sound is adequate is all I'll say. The hinges needed to be countersunk more but I kept them as they were originally. I have to come up with a better transfer option, I'm still working on that 😀

Superb job, good choice to change the colour it did look much better in the brown. I just started nickel plating also, restoring a vintage motorbike, wish I started playing years ago. I find keeping the amps low and leaving the parts in longer gives better results, polishes really well.

Stunning finish Dave ,it looked like its just has came fresh from the factory , The lighter color gave its admired look ,I also have yet to try nickel plating so watching you has inspired me to give it a go , i have also have seen it done with stainless steel on a IF can and it came up like chrome .Well done and a big pat on the back for excellent s ,

Hi Dave, The main unit looks really good and the colour is good to. I could give stainless steel plating a go but I'll have to wait till the wife goes out to get to the cutlery. Thanks for the pat on the back 😄
