I attempt to repair a 12 Inch speaker headed for the dump and thank a viewer for gifts he has sent me. A short video this week as I recover from some medical issues and continue work on a bigger project.
12 inch Magnavox speaker Model 12P1 used in Kriesler multisonic 11-103 and 11-102. Maybe others.

Hi Dave. Good speaker fix. I have also the Radiotron Designer's Handbook 2nd and 4th editions. The 2nd is just a small booklet, but the 4th is a mighty tome of over a thousand pages from memory. The 3rd and 4th editions were published world wide, although originated in Australia.

Nice fix David. Had to look at my brothers Chinese “Strauss” guitar amp the other day. Traced the source of crackling to one of the EF80s having a couple of tiny pieces of tobacco under it. The socket had a crust of nicotine as a result. The socket cleaned up ok and I cleaned the EF80s pins too. No more crackles.

Hi David, Have that same book in my collection. It is in the suggested reading list I put together in my "Show More" section. I Refer to it fairly often. Nice Repair. I have a 12 inch sitting on the bench right now with an open voice coil. (will be in a video to be released soon). Also had the wrong output transformer attached. Found an original with transformer attached for the restoration. Guess I will have to dig into the dead one and see if I can match your skills. 😊😊

Hi Vern, I wasn't familiar with the book till Martin sent it. It's very good, I have read small sections and picked up a few titbits already, I need to set some time aside to read it in full. I was hoping I could rewind the voice coil in my speaker or at least something more challenging. Good luck with your speaker repair, I'm looking forward to it. Thanks Vern, take care 👍🙂

Even if you don't end up fixing something like this, it's worth the effort to find out what works as a repair and what doesn't and how something is constructed. That's why I always attempt to fix something, even if it looks to be a lost cause. Half the time it's the learning process that's enjoyable. Great video David. The book about valves looked interesting. I bought a book on valves from the Classic Reprint Series of Forgotten Books called The Thermionic Vacuum Tube and its Applications (catchy title) by H.J. Van der Bijl. Goes a bit deep into the theory of operation, but it's worth the effort if you can find time to read it.

That was the purpose of the exercise Ged. I wanted to see if I could separate the cone from the basket and spider but I didn't need to. I will practise on another old speaker when I get the chance. Who could forget that title 😄

Hi Dave, Like you intimated, it was destined for the trash, so give a repair a go. At worst, it would remain trash. You performed an excellent job repairing that speaker. It is now ready for work as and when you require a larger speaker. Also, an excellent Antique Radio Restoration community is evolving: that sure is a good thing for like-minded people. Best regards, Phil

I just recently did the same kind of "microsurgery" on a speaker in a portable school record player (stereo!). Of course, I wasn't as precise as you, and was thankful just to re-make the connection without any rubbing or extra distortion. No one would think you did it, of course, but it's hidden behind the grille! They were also missing dust covers over the voice coil (or maybe never had them), so I hand cut little discs out of an old sock and glued them in place. (Black socks of course... I'm not an animal! ;-) They won't win any beauty contests but they work! (Never throw away your old socks until they're covered with grease, cleaner, polish, or you've cut them up and glued bits into a project!)

Hi Dave, I love old books and the fonts they use. But when you turn the pages you immediately get a headache :). I remember algebra books at school being like that. I can't survive without glossy picture fold outs. That's what the 70's brought. Color lithographic printing. My dad was a printer and used to bring samples home. But the old books definately have their charm. Hope you build your inventors bookcase out of a radio chassis.

That's rights Dave! It was part of the national highway system but was decommissioned over time as the interstate highways were built. Now it takes a guide book to find and follow the existing routes. People refer to it like it still exists! Starting in Chicago we made it to New Mexico before she had to return to work. Hope to finish one day.

I had one of these in 85/86, I used to unscrew the magnet like removing a bayonet light bulb and put it back without it rubbing. oneday I took it to school after the cone sustained a few more injuries, Damien Gow had a bright idea to plug it into the 240v, Jon grabbed me at lunch and said quick come, they're blowing up your speaker, I missed out on the loud blast, I unscrewed the magnet and saw a wisp of smoke and no sign of the coil wire (it was in the magnet), The speaker was from a Multisonic HiFi radio-gram my stster's Mormon bf gave me

Dave, my dad had copies of both the second and forth editions of the Radiotron Desogner's Handbook which I now have in my library, great reference material. Years ago the forth edition was scanned to PDF, don't know if you can still find it online but I have a copy. Finally, if you are interested, I have a PDF of images of the Philips valve factory in Sydney in the 1930's. I tried to post a link to my website for it but when I include links in my comments the comment doesn't get posted.

Starting my day with a David Tipton video and a coffee, what more can a guy ask for ? Great save once again Dave, i almost choked laughing on a sip of my Columbian liquid drug when i saw you measuring the wire's diameter. I could almost feel the wire going through the paper cone as you were pushing it in, since i did a similar restoration just last month on a pair of B&W DM 110i left for dead curb side. In fact after putting new voice coils in, these little bookshelf sounded so good i decided to recap them with high end components and they now sound amazing. Any time i get throw away stuff working again i feel like i cheat death a little, electronic death that is and that's what drives me the most in this whole new hobby for me. Needless to say you are an inspiration to me in that regard. The only problem i have is since i started all this, is word has spread i fix stuff and i always have something to fix for people on my bench delaying me working on my own projects, but i'm not really complaining since i could refuse some jobs but i don't because i see them as learning opportunities as i am still learning. Thank's for sharing and be well my friend.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 11 месяцев назад
Hi Raymond. I don't know why I measured the wire, ant small gauge wire would do 🙄 The cone magnifies any sound made while working on it, it can be quite disturbing when putting holes in it or other delicate work. Good job on the B&Ws, well worth saving. I know what you mean regarding external work, you end up doing everybody else's work while your own repairs sit idle 😄 Thanks Raymond, take care 🙂

In many ways modern speakers are much better, but they have a different sound, and often don't look or sound right in old radios. I have a small collection of old speakers just for voicing amps, as the speaker (and box!) make more difference to the sound than the brand of your amp.

Great repair on the speaker dave, i have done a couple of speakers that also had open voice coils. In my case the wire from the voice coil was run and glued to the front of the speaker cone and was a little bit easyer to repair than your speaker. You could put that speaker into "stock" for a future repair down the line or incorperate in some inclosure with a 4" tweeter/ 3~5 watts of class A amplificaton ( valve ) and you would have some sweet sounds. Looking forward to the next instalment.

Hi Tim. Firstly, do not overcook the steak, they are very lean and will be dry and unappetising if overcooked. As for a wine... Roo meat is rich, might I suggest a cool climate Shiraz, something bold and with a hint of gracefulness. Now for shrimp on the barbie. Cook in garlic butter accompanied with beer or a crisp white... maybe a Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Gris. Damn it, I'm off to the store to get some shrimp for dinner 😄

Often with that enameled wire, if you can get it hot enough you can tin it without needing to scrape it. That can be tricky to get the right balance on speakers though.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 11 месяцев назад
Yes, I know but I haven't had a lot of success doing it. there is a solder that will clean off the enamel as you solder the wire I believe. I haven't seen it be it was on RU-vid somewhere 🙂

@@DavidTipton101 I think it needs higher heat also to melt the enamel, which definitely is tricky when dealing with a short wire near a paper cone. If I remember rightly I learnt that trick from Paul Carlson (Mr Carlson's Lab)

Do you have any previous videos that show the process of fixing a speaker?
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 11 месяцев назад
Hi Erik, thank you. This speaker may have been a little different construction wise to other speakers of the same era. I don't think the magnet is usually removable in which case the cone and spider would need to be released from the basket, I was doing to try acetone to soften the adhesive in that case. I have done speaker cone repairs on video before but not repair of the voice coil 👍🙂

Hi Dave good to see you. I don't know if you are aware but please Google keto and cancer. Sugar and anything that converts to sugar such as bread or pasta, rice, sweet potatoes, carrots can support the growth of cancer cells. Its not what you eat but what you don't eat. David, I have been a radio and electronics hobbyist for many, many years, but I just realized that I don't know what purpose those braided wires on a speaker serve!? Why do the braided wires run from the speaker terminals to the cone before going to the voice coil? Why not just run the speaker signal directly to the voice coil and eliminate the braided wires? I know I am overlooking something, but I can't figure out what! Thank you.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 11 месяцев назад
Braided wire is used because it is very flexible and connects the stationary part of the speaker to the moving cone. It needs to be very flexible so as to not impede the cone travel and not fatigue over time. Thanks William 🙂
@HamJamming
@HamJamming 11 месяцев назад
@@DavidTipton101 David, I know I'm probably dumb as hell, but I'm not understanding why and how the cone of the speaker needs to be electrically connected to the speaker feed and to the coil. I guess I am just missing something. Is there a coil of wire on the speaker cone also?
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 11 месяцев назад
@@HamJamming No problem William. There is an animation in the video at 5:46. The voice coil is attached to the centre of the cone, the voice coil and the cone move in and out relative to the metal speaker housing (basket) to produce sound. The voice coil is connected back to the speaker terminals via the flexible wires so the cone can move in and out unimpeded.

Hi @AlsoMijit. The control knobs functions are printed on the dial glass, from left to right they are... volume, input selector, Tone + on/off and tuning. The second knob from the left is marked 'S', 'M' and 'R'. 'R' is Radio, 'M' is Mono records and 'S' is stereo records. Select either M or S depending on the record type you have, mono or stereo. Place a record on the record player platter and select 'Manual' on the selector control on the record player. Lift and place the tone arm on the edge of the record and it should play. You can contact me if you need further help. If you do, please attach a photo of the record player as this model came with a few brands of player 🙂
