Felixstowe Port - (Wikipedia)
The Port of Felixstowe, in Felixstowe, Suffolk is the United Kingdom's busiest container port, dealing with 48% of Britain's containerised trade.In 2017, it was ranked as 43rd busiest container port in the world and 8th in Europe, with a handled traffic of 3.85 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU).
The port is operated by the Felixstowe Dock and Railway Company which was set up under an Act of Parliament, the Felixstowe Railway and Pier Act 1875 and so, is one of the few limited companies in the UK that do not have the word "Limited" in their name. Much of the land on which it sits is owned by Trinity College, Cambridge which in the 1930s bought some land near Felixstowe which included a dock which was too small to be included in the National Dock Labour Scheme. In 1967, it set up Britain's first container terminal for £3.5m in a deal with Sea-Land Service. Because container shipping is much more economically efficient in bulk, this early start led to it becoming the UK's largest container port, despite its previous insignificance to the shipping market.
Felixstowe is owned by Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH) Group. The port has always been privately owned. In 1951, Gordon Parker, an agricultural merchant, bought the Felixstowe Dock & Railway Company, which at the time was handling only grain and coal.[citation needed] In 1976, Felixstowe was bought by European Ferries. In June 1991, P&O sold Felixstowe to Hutchison Whampoa of Hong Kong for £90m. In June 1994, Hutchison Whampoa's Hutchison International Port Holdings bought out Orient Overseas International's 25% stake in Felixstowe for £50m
The port is located on the River Orwell. The River Orwell flows through the county of Suffolk in England. Its source river[clarification needed], above the tidal limit at Stoke Bridge, is known as the River Gipping.[1] It broadens into an estuary at Ipswich, where the Ipswich dock has operated since the 7th century, and then flows into the North Sea at Felixstowe, the UK's largest container port, after joining the River Stour at Shotley forming Harwich harbour.
The large Orwell Bridge carries the A14 trunk road over the estuary to the south of Ipswich.

That bit when the lead tug goes into reverse ahead of the container ship is scary to watch! I have stood and watched this at the Landguard beach nearby (from where this was filmed) and the enormity of what's going on is awe-inspiring. The immense container ship is moving forward, the tug is maintaining distance at around 10 metres while going in reverse...

Four of Damen’s finest doing what they were built for! ASD Tug 3213 (Deben and Kent) and Asd Tug 2411 (Shotley and Sky). Great video. I do love watching tugs at work and this footage certainly captures the balletic qualities of ship-handling and an appreciation of the skills involved from both Pilot and tug masters. Good choice of music. I imagine the wind noise was horrendous even with a mic sock on! You have a like and new subscriber! Best wishes from up here on the Wirral.

Sanmar Container transport, a blast from the past, where you based around the Wakefield area ? I was on the container work in the 1980s 1990s based around the Liverpool area, but always in and out of Feilixstowe and Tilbury and Isle of Grain. I still go down to Felixstowe but with vehicles for export, it’s a lot easier now with all the new road upgrades and obviously modern vehicles. My brother is a tug skipper on the River Mersey, hence my interest when I spotted this. Take Care 👍

The Port of Felixstowe was great, now a total disgrace. It is also causing tremendous economic problems to the Uk. Many ship are waiting weeks to Dock, Many are refusing to go there. The ships that do go have significantly increased there shipping price. It really is so bad, the Government should intervene. Some desperate company’s have the Chines containers go to Rotterdam then have the load put on a truck and sent to a smaller northern Uk Port.
@royfearn4345
@royfearn4345 2 года назад
Why would the government intervene? It was largely their mindless pursuit of brexit that was the cause of all the chaos in import/export terminals through the removal of streamlined customs procedures.
@howardroberts4859
@howardroberts4859 2 года назад
@@royfearn4345 I understand that many of the workforce were offered early retirement, big mistake. Then the port was then undermanned. All the skills lost. There is a limit to what a company can do. If the Government has made some mistakes, they could help to rectify them. Try to help reinstate and or find staff. To allow this to continue is madness. But of course, at the moment, the chaos is running through the country. Sad really.
