A couple years ago we wanted to "document" the principles of electro-mechanical switching for outsiders. We had a working 200 line Strowger exchange, and we wanted to make a video to show the exchange capabilities.
We started with a French song written by Ray Ventura in 1936 "Tout va très bien, madame de la Marquise" (Everything goes very well, madame de la Marquise") In this song, Madame de la Marquise phones her castle. She is told by her servants that everything is fine at home, except for a series of escalating calamities.
More details on the French musician Ray Ventura at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Ventura
We did find a castle, we used a nice old phone, and filmed also at the working exchange.
We made now a version with English subtitles
Do not expect a technical description, but a method to give outsiders an idea what a Strowger system was.
The Strowger system is now packed and resides in the archives of a museum in Antwerp, Belgium. We try to convince the museum director to put it on display.
Currently we are also lobbying at a museum of Industrial Archeology in Ghent, Belgium.
This video is the work of Jan Verhelst. He had posted the original 143mb file to the TCI mailing list. I am making it available here for others to enjoy without having to download first.
