Engine 5 'A' was first on scene of this house fire in the area of Mary Ave in South Stockton, on February 6th, 2016. This video shows crews getting a report that 7 children were still inside. As Engine 5 fought the flames, Truck 2 conducted a primary search with their crew and came up negative. The children were thankfully not home at the time. No injuries to firefighters or civilians.
This video includes radio traffic, which is edited to coincide with the events in the video. Multiple videos were edited together, and the 'fire clock' may not be consistent with the clock of the video.
This video also includes a vertical ventilation on a roof that has already self-ventilated. Yes, we understand that fact. The Vent Group was under the belief (as everyone on the fireground was), that there were 7 children trapped inside the structure fire. Adding another ventilation hole betters visibility and survivability in the structure, and helps smoke and poisonous gases leave the structure. This crew performed vertical ventilation efficiently and safely.
We thank you for your views, support, feedback, and comments. Comments that contain profanity, incite controversy, or are intended to 'troll' will be deleted. This video is intended to educate the public on what Stockton Firefighters must encounter, not host a platform for people to argue about personal issues or the fire service. Thank you. We are proud to serve and protect the citizens and City of Stockton, CA.
CORRECTION: In the beginning of the video, Engine 3 turns around in front of Truck 2- not Engine 5. Engine 5 is in front of the structure with lines off, Engine 3 completes a Fire to Hydrant supplyline.

The two words firefighters dread the most, "children inside". This department has their stuff wired tight. Great job guys!

Nice work! I love how they pushed the “all in” search and assigned the next in truck to vent, great call by command! Within 6 minutes they were able to call a negative primary.

I am getting a very good education on firefighting by watching these videos. There is a tendency from my end of the business (LE) to be ignorant to what firefighters go through. THANKS

Another smooth, co-ordinated response resulting in a quick knockdown - brilliant. The radio operators are so cool, calm and collected.

I think they’d rather look for children and find none then not look for them and find the bodies.

Impressive knock down! Stockton FD must be well-trained and well lead. That kind of fire attack does not happen by accident.

I'm a volunteer firefighter from Texas and have seen several videos. I am curious as to why most hose teams use straight stream instead of a cone when working up close. It has been an understanding that a straight stream is used for penetration and to cover a long distance when unable to get close. Would you be able to clarify and strengthen my knowledge in operations thanks

Hard no on a cone stream. The straight stream knocks down more fire up close. When the cone stream is used water molecules are further apart, leading to more steam and it taking longer to knock fire down.

Possible life hazard. using a more opened pattern would cause steam in and rapid temperature rise, making it less survivable for anyone who may be trapped inside. Good question though.

When I came into the fire service this was still being taught, semi fogs and fogs were the way to go, open a door, open the bale count to three, shut it down and close the door and the fire would be out, etc etc. We now know through experience that while a fog or semi fog can be useful at times, that a straight stream is not only safer, but more effective. You can even use a straight or solid stream to stop a fire from flashing. I don't know who it was, but a smarter man than I once described the American fire service as 300 years of tradition unimpeded by progress. As building types and materials change, we must change. But most do not. And people die because of it.

John, here is the thing, the nozzle type often has been decided on they region of the country you live in. Combination nozzles have their place, many claim they are outdated, however, if I have newer construction with a confirmed all clear “no victim inside, or firefighters” using a quarter fog pattern through a window or exterior door into the fire room not making full entry is very effective and safe remember new construction often loses integrity much faster than older construction. You can get the same effect with a smooth bore by using the “O” pattern from an exterior opening. The point of the smooth bore is deeper heat penetration getting water on the seat of the fire as the stream doesn’t break apart. The theory of the fog stream is using water vaporization “steam” to smother the fire as water expands 1700 times its original volume. My suggestion is to get your hands on a firefighter essentials book, remember that even though there is good information the books can’t prepare you for all scenarios. As for an offensive or direct attack he use of a smooth bore or strait stream from the combination nozzle reduces the chance of disturbing the thermal layering. Disruption of the thermal layer can and will cause steam burns even through our gear. Using a smooth bore or strait stream to prevent flashover is done by small bursts of water at the ceiling keeping the temperature in check. The thermal layering is really cool to see it’s the line where cooler air at the bottom meets the hot air that is dropping from the ceiling.

You guys got some big ones standing on that roof, I don’t know if the risk is worth the reward...I know there’s a report of like, 84 kids in there but it’s already self vented.
