Hi! Im trying to learn this technique because my clients are interested in longer lasting gel manicures! I do everything you mentionand no matter what I do the structured manis just dont last! They still chip 😢 like a regular manicure! Do you need to cap the free edge after applying each gel layer or is that unnecessary? I have yet to try builder gel because I heard that rubber base was easier to use for a beginner! I specialize in gelx and I fill gelx with rubber base and get amazing retention but i dont why i can’t create a long lasting structured mani! Any pointers?

Hey! I am sorry to hear this is happening! To be honest there could be a multitude of reason that you are getting chipping. I do not cap the free edge because after I top coat I always finish file. It could be the gel system you are using, or maybe your lamp needs to be replaced. Also, the same gel is not going to work on every client, because some clients have different needs depending on the health of their nails, their goals, shape and length as well as their lifestyle. Rubber base might be too flexible, or maybe you are not building the correct structure that the nail needs. Here is what I would do. Make sure what ever gel system you are using, you are using every product in that system that you need to do a structured mani. Meaning if you are using Apres extension gel, you aren't using a different brand's primer and base coat. Also, check to see if your lamp needs to be replaced, I see a lot of clients in a week about 20-25 so I replace my lamp every year. Some lamps do not work with some gels. I have the kokoist lamp for when I do soft gel manicures because I normally only use Kokoist during that service. I also have a Akzentz lamp when I do hard gel, because I use the Akzentz gel during that service. Lastly, make sure that your prep is right, you can do beautiful gel nails but if the prep is not done correctly they will not last. Hope that helps!

Love this video! Very informative! Is it necessary or more beneficial to apply a base gel before going in with a rubber base gel or builder gel?

Thank you so much! 😊 I would say yes it is beneficial to apply a base gel before going in with a rubber base gel or builder gel. I think it makes a big difference adhesion wise! Normally whatever builder gel you use, I would use the systems same primer if they have or need one, and the same base. For a colored rubber base gel, I always put down a thinner clear base down, so when doing a fill or rebalance you don’t file all the way down to the natural nail. Hope that helps!

Did you take off all of the gel from the previous manicure? You mentioned doing a fill.

Did you remove all of the gel from the previous manicure? You mentioned doing a fill. Could you please tell me where to get the removal and cuticle bits you used? Are they diamond bits? I have not had good experiences using acetone to remove my polish. It doesn't take much to run my nails.

Hey great question! So normally for a fill you do not have to remove all of the previous builder gel, unless it has lifted or you are doing a drastic color change if you are using a colored base. Most of my bits are from Erica's ATA or Staleks. The cuticle bits are diamond. If you are DIY nails at home I would be careful trying to use an e-file on yourself. It is very easy to damage your nails if you are not properly educated. I hope that helps!

this being said I normally leave about 10-20% of the previous gel on the nail

What remover bit are you using?
