Have you been studying Italian for a while but feeling frustrated that you're not getting to the next level? This episode I sit down with my friend Brian to share our advice on how we each learnt Italian from scratch and got to a point of feeling comfortable and confident speaking, reading and thinking in Italian.

Every day I get so many emails and comments asking why you can’t locate the music I use or find it using Shazam. I purchase music licenses for almost all the music you hear in my videos. I buy them them from various royalty-free production music sites and most of the time they don’t list the performer because it’s music made only for film productions with an audio watermark throughout the entire track, unless you purchase the single-use license for $50-100 per track. I use a lot of opera so often I’ll reference the opera but I won’t be able to direct you to a recording of that specific performance that you could stream or buy on iTunes or Spotify. Hope that clears things up and thank you for appreciating quality music.
Please don't follow me on Facebook as that person is not me - they have stolen my identity for the past few years. Really very helpful and supportive. It was great that Brian was able to participate on an equal footing on this topic, way to go Brian.

I’m not even actively learning Italian but you two make me want to - it’s fascinating and musical to listen to, and it’s so kind of you to break it down for us and offer your advice! Actually I just started a job at Bath Abbey, and when I come across Italian guests I tell them ‘Alla prossima’ upon parting ways, as you do in your videos, and I love seeing their eyes light up 🥰 SI, bring on more Brian! It’s lovely and fun to see the chemistry between you two ❤️ and by the way, Brian, The Little Mermaid is my favourite too 😉 🧜‍♀️

it's so true about the musicality of a language.. i was a semi pro singer, and I also spoke several languages ( not fluent in them , but at least intermediate ).. my voice coach said she's not surprised at all that I could speak other languages so easily , as the "music " of each language is very different from each other.. I picked that up immediately and found the " flow" to better learn that language.. really fun video !! thank you Kylie and Brian !! Norakag , here ( I am an artist , now , and my singing continues , but not professionally.. )❤

I have lived in Southern Italy for 5 years now and understand Italian much but speak little, even with 2 Italian courses under my belt. So many times I have tried to speak Italian to a native Italian and they reply back to me in English. I am finding it too easy to speak English in Italy and get by on it. So many reasons for this and I don't want these to be excuses for not learning Italian. Commitment starts now to have conversational level Italian in 1 year's time. Thanks for the motivation.

Ive been learning French on Duolingo for two years. Just 15 minutes a day makes it bearable and if you have the time it is achievable to learn any language that way.
@marilyndoering2501

I started learning Italian on Duolingo several months before my trip to Italy and it really helped! I was able to speak a few phrases and ask questions with at least a basic understanding of the answer. I was thrilled! I also watched lots of Italian movies with subtitles to get the phrasing and inflection, or music of the language. I’m back to learning more even if just 10 min a day. It makes such a difference to speak even a little in the local language!

I am an Italian American. As a little girl my grandparents spoke to me in Italian. But of course through time I lost it but what stuck with me was the musicality. In learning Italian I always know ‘how’ to say it. It’s the music that makes it such a passionate emotional language. If I see a word and I don’t even know the meaning I’ll know how to say it with passion. I can still here my grandparents speak their Neapolitan dialect though they’ve been gone for decades. I learned the music before I knew the meaning. Am I ‘patsa’? Thank you for making that piece so important. Love you both and welcome back Brian!

Well said. I throw it out there in an exaggerated stage character manner and more often than not ' get the ball over the fence' and engage the listener. About a year ago, Italians stopped responding to me in English. What a milestone that was

I love watching you guys have so much fun, it’s so nice that Brian is able to visit you from such a far away country. He is a true friend.!! Thank you for sharing your experience with Italian to help the people that want to learn Italian!! it’s very interesting that you mentioned most of your viewers are retired, in reality I never used to watch RU-vid and by chance I wanted a recipe for ricotta cake and that’s how I ran into your channel, plus I’ve been taking care of my father for the past 2 1/2 years and I truly enjoy watching all your episodes. I do feel like I’m retired because I’m taking care of my father. Anyway, my point is here I’ve always had two jobs for over 32 years and I’ve never had time to watch. RU-vid are used to only watch the news just to see what’s going on in the world I barely have time for TV. but now, after the pandemic things, kind of slow down job wise and pretty much halted when my father became ill and I’m taking care of him full-time. Anyway, I love your channel and can’t live without it right now.!!😄❤️

YAY! BRIAN IS BACK! I feel so joyful watching both of you together. Everyone needs a Brian in their life, what a wonderful human being, and you as well! Such wonderful tips on learning Italian. I tried a few years ago but then stopped. Recently I have made friends with 2 Italians so maybe its time to learn again. I have visited Italy many times and Italians mistake me for a local and start speaking Italian to me! I apparently look Italian 😆 The musicality tip makes SOOOO much sense! That is how we learn words of a song so fast. Learning lyrics by reading would take so much longer conpared to hearing them in music. I think it would a similar part of the brain children use when learning to speak. P.S........Yes I would love to see another video with Brian! Perhaps a day with Brian? I would love to see what you get up to throughout the day while he is in Italy. Cooking with Brian as someone suggested would also be a fun video!

Brian! So lovely to see you two together. This is such good timing for me as I have been really stuck learning Italian, not helped by spending time in France (and how do people not mix languages up? I can start a sentence in French and finish it in Italian; which has people looking at me oddly as I don't realise). These tips were great, as trying to think in Italian has always flummoxed me and I seem to spend a lot of time translating from English or into English and then miss what the person is saying next. Thanks to you both I have a renewed enthusiasm for getting stuck back into my studies!

So much fun to watch you and Brian discussing this fascinating topic!! I really agree with your tip about ‘what would a native Italian say in this context?’ Instead of trying to do a literal translation from English) By the way I just returned from Stromboli. I had the chance to use your recommended phrase ‘mi fido di lei’ (the waiter was assuring me the food would be served fairly quickly & I wouldn’t miss my ferry to go back to Milazzo). It was such a delight how the staff interacted with me because it felt so natural and also fun to chat with them. Thank you so much Kylie for all of your invaluable tips!! My last visit to Tuscany I fell in love with the Val D'Orcia region I found this at the hotel I stayed in thought I would share with you. I dream in silence awaken in another era in the tranquil shade of ancient olive trees amongst the fragrances and flavours of the past home for the heart, refuge for the soul. Your polite Italian lessons make sense and appreciate the phrases I can use and agree manners are an important part of our values and intend to practice. This is such a great video, and all so true -- I especially agree 100% with putting your phone (and all devices!) in the language you want to learn, the subtitles on your favorite films / TV shows, also reading your favorite books in the language of choice too. I spent a lot of time on the metro in Paris without my headphones on just listening to how people spoke, so I learned how to fudge it if my grammar wasn't perfect because I could do the inflection / transitional sounds authentically. Also, love seeing Brian again 😊

Being already fluent in Italian this is quite helpful. Just like anything else, when you don’t practice it often you tend to forget and lose a little bit of the language so it’s great how the both of you broke everything down. Especially with the verbs. I too tend to forget about the masculine and feminine conversions and always default to the masculine. At times I get poked fun at by my Italian relatives but I know it’s not out of malice. I always get corrected which is helpful. I know that if I were in Italy right now surrounded by all things Italian I would improve 10 fold. At the moment I have family from Italy visiting Canada and I’m feeling a bit self conscious about my speaking but this video came just in time! Thank you Kylie and Brian! Your laughs are so infectious and it’s so great to see Brian again. ❤😂

Just seeing you and Brian giggling so much made me laugh! Your 10 tips are brilliant. I started learning Italian in the late 1980s, spent a semester in Firenze and have recently returned quite a few times (post-COVID). I try my best, but I think your 10 verbs is essential for me. Grazie!

Very interesting video guys , I found it to be a disadvantage that my mother had taught me the Sicilian dialect as a child living in Australia, i found it harder to learn Italian as an Adult. It's easier learning from scratch without knowing an Italian dialect in my opinion. Dialects are completely different languages in Italy.😊

Yes, I suppose you’re right! I found that a little with Spanish! They’re so similar that one gets confused.

There are often people who confuse the dialect or some dialect terms with Italian. They talk to someone saying things in dialect and perhaps they think they are saying them in standard Italian. In dialects there are a lot of words or expressions that are completely different from standard Italian. There are dialects in Italy that, rather than “dialects”, can practically be considered a separate language. And dialects in Italy often change not only from one region to another, but also from one area to another, one city to another, even a few kilometers away. I remember a curious anecdote here in Germany (I am Italian and I am also an Italian teacher and I teach Italian here in German schools). A German lady married to a Sicilian, she had learned all the Sicilian dialect from her husband, but she spoke it thinking she was speaking in Italian. One day she came to school to pick up her son who was in my Italian class and began to speak to me in a strict Sicilian dialect ! I, coming from the Campania region, know my dialect, but not Sicilian. She was amazed that I didn't understand what she was saying. And she at that point said in German……. “but you do not understand Italian ?” And I replied……dear lady, if you spoke in Italian, there would be no problems, but what you have said up to now was only a strict Sicilian dialect. Practically the German lady instead thought she was speaking Italian with me.

@@aris1956this is SUCH an interesting part of Italy and the language(s)! Good story! So interesting how Italians effectively know their national language but also have a second language that can mean you are ONLY understood by your locals speaking it in front of another Italian from a different region. This is not paralleled in all other European countries at all, even though several countries may have one or two regional ligos that have a different origin or simoly sound very differently. The fact entire sentances and conversations are altogether foreign languages between Italians du to different geographic backgrounds is super interesting!

Is Sicilian so different than standard Italian??
@rosssala

@@gigibenea3529 yes it's another language. Italy has 34 spoken languages and related dialects , most people don't know this 🙈

Lovely video Kylie and Brian. I am over 500 days into learning Italian using a well-regarded app. My wife is studying as well. There are lots of great little tips you have given us such as changing your phone to Italian, using reverse Google Translate and buddying up with a non-Italian for practice. Grazie mille!

This was very useful and fun to watch, thank you! I have been learning Italian on and off for some time, taken group and one to one lessons, too. I started to make progress when I began taking lessons at International House London. I do online lessons weekly. Their teachers are really great and the lessons are enjoyable, the 2 hrs just fly by. Not sure if it is ok to name providers on RU-vid, but I wanted to share my experience because this school is really good. Before this I also tried Rosetta Stone, which was helpful as they use lots of visuals. Only issue was that it was a lot of material to cover so I had to decide between lessons and Rosetta Stone. Duolingo didn't really work for me. I also downloaded a verb app so these days when I catch myself scrolling on instagram, I jump over to the verb app and revise/learn instead of draining my brain on social media. Love your videos, they are a delight! :)

So lovely to see you and Brian together - I wonder if Brian is collecting tablecloths, fabrics, mosaics, olive oil in adorable little bottles for his 'Luxe Life' / 'The Finer Things' store in Australia ? Looking forward to next weekend.

Oh my gosh, I absolutely love the joy & energy that the two of you generate when you’re together. Like two giggly little kids. More collaborations with Brian on ANY topic would be such a delight! All of your language tips were so useful. Regarding the importance musicality in language, I’ve found that to be the case with English speaking Indians. Their grammar and vocabulary are usually perfect, but I often struggle to understand what they’re saying at first, because the musicality is “off.” Our comprehension of long dinner conversation drops from 50-80% to less than 5% when they switch to the dialect. Re Italian dialects: My mother-in-law’s family is from Lombardia (Lago di Como). The east side of the lake mostly speaks “standard” Italian

Oddio Mio, La Grammatica of Italiano is very hard! :) I've been taking formal Italian classes for around a month now, and I do agree with both of u, we need to put extra effort of learning by practicing and memorizing them a lot! Thanks for the fun videos !

Kylie, Brian... thanks for all the great suggestions. I need all the help I can get. I now wish I paid more attention in my language class back in High School. At 61 I'm struggling to learn the language despite moving to Italy and setting up a new home etc. Thank goodness for Google translate.. I'm sure I'll get there by the time I'm 81 I'm sure.

Great video!! When I was learning Italian many years ago my daughters were very young and I would say aloud 'ieri sera' and until this day they say in English 'yesterday night' and I love it :)
