My cousin teases me for playing with a log. It’s 1.0 mm minimum for me. I started with a thin giveaway Fender pick and almost immediately worked my way up .8 mm orange Dunlop Tortex picks. I stayed there for a couple of years, but when I started playing lead in a band, I had to move up to 1.0 mm picks or heavier. I can’t play with a thin pick, other than perhaps some chordal strumming. When doing single note lines they feel just like a wet noodle to me. I don’t feel like I have as much control. The “give” of a flimsy pick even effects my timing on single note lines. The give makes it difficult to know exactly when the pick is going to “release” the string and sound the note. I also can’t “feel” the strings under my pick when I try using a floppy one. Any “give” in my pick just throws me off my already weak game! 😜

'Couldn't agree more, Brian. ...and sometimes a short, stubby 1 mil...for jazz style, etc. The only time I reach for a floppy pick is to accentuate the pick-on-string sound for an old, slow ballad, some folk-, or old-style country or mountain music...and it's ALWAYS on a rhythm part of the song. I agree. ... Crossbow

I recently switched to 3mm wooden picks. Thicker, more rigid picks made literally everything easier. Pinch harmonics, economy picking, James Hetfield down picking, sweeping... All easier.

GREAT job !!! The analogy might be BASEBALL.... it's not the pitcher's job to run all over the place (picking hand). The fielders (fretting hand/fingers) run all over the field (fretboard)....and the catcher is the other part of the pitching team....(the fingers of your picking hand)... for double-stops or fingerpicking, etc. This is a super important lesson for all guitarists, Ian !!! ... I actually didn't know that I shouldn't play arpeggios with my default of alternating picking.
@jlarisch123
@jlarisch123 4 года назад
How do you decide when to use alternating picking vs this style of picking?
@BrianGay57
@BrianGay57 4 года назад
What I did was think “economy of motion.” When I am moving up one string I alternate. When I am going across the fretboard arpeggiating a chord I do this. Sometimes I mix it up. It depends on the situation. I don’t remember working on it too long. It was more just being aware of it, and thinking about the most “efficient” way to get from this note to the next note. It fairly quickly became automatic for me. I’m sure I could always be better of course, but I do it without thinking about it.

I've been struggling to play the main part of this shuffle. This video has made it easier to build my speed and accuracy. If you're looking for an exercise for this picking method, I'd say the main part/into of this song would be a good start: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IaHxPi9dM7o.html It's a b-flat minor pentatonic starting on the high e string.

I think sweep picking uses this as well (fire into the next string) - I've tried this before but for me I hit the strings way to hard (because I feel/need to dive deeper with the pick in order for it to catch on the next one instead of flowing just over it) so that it sounds really bad (you can kinda hear it here too) - maybe that's a difference when you play electric(?) - any tipps or hints on whether we should exercise this on electric too especially for those preferring lighter strokes ?
@StichMethodGuitar
@StichMethodGuitar 4 года назад
Are you tilting the pick to create an almost knife sharpening angle? If you are resting your pick flat against the string it will create too much force and a “pick thwap” as I call it.

Many years ago when I learned classical guitar (fingerpicking) I was taught how to use rest stroke and free stroke (appoyando and tirando). The idea was pretty much that classical guitar is a mix of melody and arpeggios. Rest stroke will emphasize the melody line.

I tried this a some time back when playing "Don't Fear the Reaper", but guys told me somehow the feel of the piece was missing, and I put it down to maybe it was because all my sense of rhythm and accent seems to come from moving my hand up and down, whether it is strumming or alternate picking. I can do all downstrokes, but still moving my hand each time inefficiently as you describe to feel the pulse. Doing the rest strokes at speed feels like I'm only judging the "speed of the sweep"and trying to keep it even, rather than being able to accent any individual note or rely on my own physical "oscillations" to keep time. Maybe I just need more practice at the rest strokes?

I guess in some cases you can mute the string with you left hand and rake over the string to hit the next note, as in the immigrant song.
