Got a Strumstick in DAD tuning? Probably a Grand McNally D-33 Strumstick. Let's walk through how to approach some of the most used chords. This is by no means an exhaustive look at chords, but ample to get you through 80% of music and 100% FUN!
There are a few other videos already posted for chord theory and basic chords, or if you have a more junior sized Strumstick or Seagull Merlin stick dulcimer. BTW, did you know that the Seagull Merlin is tuned the same as a Grand Strumstick (DAD)? That means everything you find about a D Merlin M4 will work for a Strumstick (and vice versa ;-)

Your videos have convinced me to risk the waters and get one of these instruments. I have only vocal training, but always wanted to branch out. After getting covid, then long covid, my vocal control and breath duration have suffered. My first solution was to make and learn a lyre, which has worked above expectations since I live in a rural, remote area without instructors or even someone to jam with. I've been lured by the famous simplicity of these strumstick variants on other channels, but worried about the instructional support...and then found you. Thank you for what you're doing. I know that you put time and care into these free videos. Your not making money, you are spreading music. That is such a beautiful thing to do.

Thanks for the kind words Robert (assumption from user name)…. I do hope to make enough money on these things one day to support it more than it does, but for now it’s certainly about helping people… if you’ve taken a shine to anything new and musical you wouldn’t otherwise have done/tried / succeeded at, and I helped bridge a gap in some way, then you have closed my week on a good note. Posting RU-vid videos is a lot of work and you never really know if people find them helpful or not unless they speak up… so, thank you. 😊

I just received a seagull m4 for christmas and am enthralled with it!! Such great sounds. Have subscribed to your you tube and instagram channels. Looking forward to figuring this thing out!

Awesome. I got one over the summer to take on the Appalachian Trail with me, and taught myself a couple of songs, and only recently had the time to pick it up again and thought I’d look up some tutorials on how to play other stuff LOL. Thank you for this, you’re the best kind of nerd. :-)

To play a McNally strumstick properly, you do NOT fret on top of the fret! You put your finger just before the fret - just like you do on a guitar. That is how the McNally folks show it on their videos on RU-vid.

That’s correct. Same for every fretted instrument. You want to have your finger as close to, and behind/to the left of, the fret. The closer the better because it makes for a tighter connection with the fret, causing it to ring truer and avoid buzzing. If I said something different in the video, thank you for clarifying!

While I appreciate your sentiment, your critique could be a bit more specific. I don’t know what complicated is for you, so please elaborate. And if it’s moving too fast you can always pause it, you know. No need to be unkind at a free resource.
