I got the Iridium as a second device as I was an AX8 user. Now, my AX8 is collecting dust and I suppose I will try to sell it soon. So happy to finally stop tweaking presets and hundreds of parameters and IRs. Since I have the Iridium I spend more time playing. So, to me, the Iridium is ideal for those of us who have tried all modelers since the first POD and are tired of clicking on virtual knobs in a computer to build a preset that sounds good today but not so good the day after (If you are into modelers, you know the feeling)

Also had AX8 and Kemper. They’re both gone now and I use Iridium most of the time with some favorite pedals. I also have a Helix floor and a couple tube amps which I will keep. Iridium is getting the most action these days.

Exactly the reason I went back to pedals. Hours and hours of trying to find an amp I like, not so with the Iridium. Quick knob access to great sounds in seconds!

I just picked up an iridium..great unit I love it . It’s basic but does the job well. I’d rather have a unit with a few great sounds then a unit with 1000 tones and only a few good ones in the pack .

Great review man you dial shit in so quick and effectively its a joy to watch and listen. That chime is worth it also has shades of the gainy orange rockerverb. Definitely a market for this even as a tube amp backup pedal

I love how this gets down to many styles of playing and sound. Honestly I think after this video, the iridium is for me for home jamming and direct input playing live without all the bells and whistles of the axe or kemper

Couldn't click fast enough when I saw this. Very cool. That Vox model did sound killer with the PRS. All of the amps sounded great to me. Sounded great with the tubescreamer too. This thing with a power amp and some fav pedals such as an SD1 and a delay, phaser, etc might be a great thing. That vox did sound great. I was surprised at how good it did with the gain. Very cool..

Had to come back to this video and comment again to say that this video inspired me to crank my backline AC15 for an upcoming event at the college where I work. It's a Battle of the Bands, and a lot of the bands are doing rock. The AC15 is handling the duty of providing tones for songs ranging from Don't Stop Believing to Sweet Child Of Mine to Ain't Talking 'Bout Love to (I think) For Whom The Bell Tolls. It totally rips, and I love its tone compared to the ice-picky shrillness of the Hot Rod Deluxe IV I have in backline as well. Thanks for giving me some great ideas, Leon!

Savage tones bro'! I have been using a Tech 21 Brit Fly Rig for FOH Worship (a nice all around analog unit with delay/tap tempo/reverb/and boost section...it works well with most pedals too). We recently ditched amp sims and started using tube amps again (AC 15 and Victory V30). We have had to play at a lot of other events recently, so hauling the amps has been a pain. I'm seriously looking at getting one of these and update from the Fly Rig. Thanks for posting.

You didn't mention, so I thought I'd point out, the controls have some hidden functionality. For instance, the mids control on the Fender does more than boosting or cutting mids. It actually shifts the character between blackface and tweed. There's similar functionality on the other two amps too. This functionality is described on the Strymon website.

Very cool review - simple trying all the knobs, what they do. Only the mid knob would have been good to be more highlighted, cause there are special sounds with it. Maybe there will be an update for the Plexi Marshall? I like it very much with G12H30 IR´s from Valhall.

Damn, that Vox model is off the chain! Just a wild and untamed beast that begs to run free. If I may be so bold, I'd love to see a full instrumental song using that model for leads, maybe with the Marshall model supplying the rhythm parts.

My initial thoughts about the Iridium is that it is a pedal platform amp modeler in a box. The pedals (on my small board) that I ran through it sounded best with the Chime and Punch models. For some reason they are not really sounding that great with the round setting. However, overall (especially it taking pedals), so far so good but still need to play with it some more. Cheers!

Do you have a Klon(e) that you can demo with the Chime? The best higher gain sound I found on the Iridium is using Chime gain at 3 o’clock with Klon in front, GNR stock cab, mids below noon. It’s still only getting up to almost modded JCM 800 gain level so this pedal isn’t for someone who needs modern metal sounds. There are two Valhallir cabs in the IR manager that I liked better for Round clean sounds but the Punch model turned out to be better for a Philip Sayce type tone. I like the largest room sound with room at 2 o’clock to give you that amp like connection.

I’ve tried this and agree the Marshall isn’t great but the vox is great. I’ve had a thought to run this in conjunction with my Friedman pink taco for high gain and use the Iridium for the clean and mid gain Vox with an amp switcher for a versatile rig. Can anyone think of a way to do that while maintaining only one line out? Would something like the Mesa Head switcher accomplish that. 2 inputs one output?

Great review, Can this be used ditto record direct into Audio Interface and DAW? I bought a Boss SD1 and it sounds terrible directly into my audio interface. Also, I am not a metal guy but do classic and more modern rock. Is this good for that. I am hearing a lot of metal sounds that I would never use. I saw your other review of the Pocket Pod which looked good also.

I agree with your conclusions. I own the pedal and prefer the Chime (Vox) and Round (Fender) to the Punch (Marshall). Definitely not a modern high gain, metal-ly pedal. But a good, meat 'n potatoes, pedal with great, usable classic tones. I think it's simplicity is a good thing. If you want more bells and whistles there are other options out there like the Axe-Fxes and Kemper etc.

The Vox model sounds awesome! I agree the Marshall model isn't as good. With the boost in front of it, it almost had a Metal Zone vibe. But in a post-2019 sorta way haha

I haven't found a compatible IR file of your "LT TV MIX 7" for the Iridium on your Dropbox... When I attempt to use the WAV version I found there, the IR Manager says it is not compatible... Is there one and I'm just missing it?

I’d love something pedal sized solution like this BUT the main benefit of this format is being able to more easily integrate it with a pedalboard, but the lack of an fx loop means I can’t use many of my pedals the way I want 😕 To keep the small form factor, I’d gladly sacrifice the stereo right and expression jacks for a send/return.

surprised at the amount of gain on tap, had it down as its main purpose of a cleanish platform for pedals for going direct, cool to hear those sorts of tones as well, custom IRs open up a whole world of possibilities shame they didn't include XLR out but understand for the form factor and FX loop applications in mind

@@LeonTodd I think I need to break down and get a decent attenuator for my Trilogy mkII and figure out a good way to get my JMP1 into my DAW. I've been using a bunch of free amp sims and they have that fizzy thing going on too and it's just a major pain trying to tame it. Prefer the real deal, but volume is always an issue. Sigh.

Seems obvious that the only real reason to buy one of these is if you are a pedalboard+amp guy and you want to have the option of sometimes going direct. If you want direct tones as a main rig, there are clearly better options.

I am not a fan of this, I have been searching for small form factor modeller (I have the Axe 3 but its too big to take outside)... the FM3 seems to lack DSP power so I'll wait for the next revision which will be awesome. I think I'll get the Revv D20 since its a real amp with a load box and etc. I am using my guitar volume a lot so usually it's not cleaning up well. the Axe 3 is amazing though.

What do you need to run that the FM3 won't? My main live preset has a wah, amp, cab, PEQ, multiband comp, multitap delay, dual delay and reverb that it runs just fine, and each of those blocks has 4 channels for different variations. I've got another preset with the mutidelay/multiband comp subbed out for a drive, phaser and comp and it runs sweet.

@@LeonTodd Ohh, I checked your vids about the FM3 and it's just ask killer as the Axe 3, thank you for doing this! The problem is that the FM3 is not in stock :) on reverb it prices twice as much... asked with the guys in Fractal might be available in a few months... I tried the Boss GT1000Core but compare the the Axe3 is a joke in almost any class, same about Helix... any other suggestions if no FM3 around?

It sounds great, but since I have the "real" modelers Axe Fx III and Kemper, it would be more or less a travel thing (like for recording in a hotel room) but the BIAS apps on iPad already seem to have me covered there.

I own 3 Strymon pedals but I am glad I am glad i picked another preamp/amp-in-a-box pedal for my board, as a metal/ambient guy :) Great pedal for many players tho.

In the words of Shania:"That don't impress me much." The Vox sounds good, the fender was very disappointing, the Marshall fell somewhere in the middle. But this costs 1/3 of an FM3, and all you get is one and a half decent amp models.

I can hear that synth going "Ow-a-wow-a-wow" now! As a value proposition it only really makes sense of you need something really small and simple or if you need the extra option to add to your board. The amp models aren't really FAS tier though.

I like the enthusiasm of the reviewer. But quite frankly, there are tons of reviews of this thing out there and some of them do show killer tones. The Fender can sound amazing. But I agree that here the Fender was kind of lame. I am not sure it is the pedal's fault though. I suggest everyone to keep looking at other reviews. I bumped recently into Johnathan Cordy's channel (ru-vid.com). He's got many Iridium demos with glorious sounds (and sublime playing too). Love /C

Always nice to hear you play, but I must admit that the pedal sounds disappointing to my ears, nowhere near the amp models in the Ax8 , Helix, amplifire, Kemper era, I would take the Hx stomp instead.

Gotta say I am not a fan of this thing. Charging way too much for something basically designed to let you go direct with only three mediocre amp models. Just get a modeler if that’s what you want to do. Much better bang for your buck
