Strymon Iridium | The Most-Asked Questions | IRs, DI Boxes, and Wet FX

It seems like every week I see a new Iridium user (or any other amp modeler, really) asking the same questions online: do I need to buy some third party cabinet IRs? Is it okay to use a regular DI box or do I need one of these new line isolator units from Walrus or Pinstripe? Do you put your delays and reverbs before the Iridium or after it?
This video is an attempt to dig into some of that, particularly the IR question, which I haven't really explored too much before now.
Some signal chain notes that I didn't really go into in the video:
- Guitar is a Fender JA-90 Telecaster
- The drives I'm using here are the Paul Cochrane Timmy (always on) and the Mojo Hand Rook (for the more overdriven parts).
- The delay and reverb in the first part of the video are a Source Audio Nemesis and Neunaber Immerse. The ending where I dig into Wet FX order, is a Strymon El Capistan and blueSky (I wanted to use something not attached to my board so I could switch the order around on the fly).
- Unless I say otherwise, I'm usually on the Chime amp into cab A.
- Except for the few minutes where I'm testing out a different DI box, most of the video is using the Walrus Canvas.
-------------------------------------------
Unless I state otherwise in the video, everything I test out on here is stuff that I bought myself. There are no paid reviews on this channel and only a couple times have I ever had items sent to me for review. All opinions are my own!

I appreciate your video. Good info on aftermarket IRs that I'm going to use. I'd like to add that the "Round" amp sim is based on the "Normal" Deluxe Reverb channel--the one that almost no one plugs in to. It's not the [sic] "Vibrato" channel with the bright cap. Nearly all the demos I see on RU-vid comment on the "Round" being dull and flat. That's the way it's supposed to be: round, not scooped--a stated design goal. If you add the Flint, it can sound more like the the brighter channel. For distortion pedals like the Friedman Small Box, DS-1, etc., etc., it sounds much better through the normal channel of a real DR. The real DR also has the tremolo circuit, which adds gain and also doesn't play so nice with distortion pedals. The Iridium is set up to best take all gain pedals like a true pedal platform.

Excellent advice on the stock cabs and exactly how I feel about the idea of Strymon likely knew what they were doing when they picked the stock cabs. Besides a lot of the differences in cabs can likely be matched with an eq. And anytime I’m running my board direct to a PA I’m using an eq pedal anyway as you never know what you’ll get with different house speakers. Thanks again.

I’m think I’m changing my pedalboard to put the iridium at the end of my pedals and my mobius, blue sky, and DIG delay before it.

Yeah I’m generally an ‘amp at the end’ person, that’s how I always ran my (real) amp back when I had one so it feels right to me. It was fun to try the other way for this video - I’d never really done it before - but now I’m back to my usual, hah.

Sounds great to me… everyone thinks since ua audio is better idk but I know good sounds and tones and this is great sounding.

Yeah, the UA ones are very... buzzy? popular?... right now. I'm a little interested in trying one someday just to say that I did, but frankly I'm perfectly happy with the Iridium.

I’ve really been torn on the iridium vs the UA dream or ruby lately. It’s pretty touch to get a read on what’s the best option. The UA pedals seem to sound immediately better to my ears but lacks versatility of the strymon. And people seem to swear that all the iridium needs is the right IRS and some good pedals. I would love to try a riverside or sunset into the iridium with a good reverb or delay

You know what, I just got my hands on a Ruby for my very newest video, and I was mixed on it. It felt amazing to play, there's something about the transients of the notes and the clarity and brightness of it that I really responded to, but when I recorded clips with it and blind-compared them to the Iridium I usually preferred the Iridium. And I think the Strymon takes drive pedals better. I came away feeling that the Ruby is an excellent piece of gear but I'm quite content with the Iridium.
@darrelladams4886

@@LeFeversAudio the UAs seem like they sound better right out the box but the iridium has more of the potential to be amazing. I just have this nagging feeling that strymon will release an updated version of it before long. It’s been out for a bit now and has has received some challenge immediately. And I also think Strymon would want to do something to answer the competition.

@@darrelladams4886 they should put a simple reverb in the Iridium.

Should I plug a Strymon Iridium into the Hi-Z input or the line-level input on my computer’s audio interface?
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 7 месяцев назад
Hmm. I've done it both ways and it works fine, though you might have to crank up the Iridium's output to get up to line level. To be honest I don't understand impedance well enough to know for sure if there's a 'correct' input to use there but I've had good results either way on my own preamps and interfaces.

I agree with you about the IR's. I thinkalot of guitar players fall into the "chasing tone" trap. They argue about what wood to use on electric guitars. When the pickups do everything as far as sound.

How would I record right into a computer? Just connect via USB?
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 5 месяцев назад
The Iridium is just an amp modeler, not an audio interface as well, so you’d have to plug into some kind of audio interface. (The HX Stomp is both, if you needed one device that can cover both things.) I plug my Iridium into a Focusrite Scarlett for recording.

Hi man, What's your experience using overdrive pedals with the iridium compared to UA pedals? How is the iridium better?
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 10 месяцев назад
I only used one of the UA ones for as long as it took to make this comparison video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H6889uyMzBI.htmlsi=gVIaqUBSOQWE6rdr There were things I liked about the Ruby (a sort of brightness and 'feel' to it) but by and large I am much more comfortable with the Iridium, perhaps just because I know it better. It doesn't get as 'woolly' and bass-heavy as when I was trying to drive the Ruby. I don't know if any of that helps but those were my impressions.

@@LeFeversAudio The ruby is very scooped. Can that be dialed out?
@LeFeversAudio
@LeFeversAudio 10 месяцев назад
@@waltuhhimself I'm not sure... a certain amount of extreme low and high end seemed to be built into the pedal, so perhaps not. But I also didn't spend a ton of time with it so I could be wrong.
