What an excellent pose for a figure, that guy leaning up against the Sherman…as usual a beautiful rendition the old school way…

YES! Thanks, this was exactly what I was hoping and wishing for, Rick! Maybe the "behind the wheels" section would be a good candidate for a follow up long-form video - it amazes me you can get such structure there just with oils...

Another great video. The pic you showed of the Sherman tank is either a posed pic or has the most laid back guy of all time. It appears as if there is some kind of explosion in front of the tank and the dude is just looking back at the cameraman cool as you like.

Awesome weathering Rick! I watch all your videos because there is much for me to learn from and of course emulate on my own models. I like the way you filmed this video. The next step for me is to get some Abteilung oil colors and start using them. I always look forward to your next posting!, thanks for sharing

Amazing work as always Rick, thanks so much! I really like your approach or randomising weathering with oils and not applying the traditional "pre/post shading, pin wash and filters over everything" and achieving much more realistic results. Looking at the Olive Drab scheme, and the wonderful battered weathering, how about an M7 Priest for a future project? (can also be done in a British desert camo scheme). It's one of those overlooked modelling subjects, maybe because it's so close to a Sherman? But it offers so much more options for weathering with its open interior and the gun mechanism and gun deck. It also has a neglected history as it often saved the day for armoured troops by softening urban targets with its 105mm gun (reports of urban combat in Germany are very interesting), so sort if an an unsung hero you could say 🙂 Anyway thanks again!

Another great video. Interesting techniques and a beautiful build. I do have to challenge you on the color of the tools. "The tools would be painted in place." (3:16 in the video). I believe that US tanks would be painted in the factory, before the tools were issued and deposited on the vehicle. The tools would come painted, from some other manufacturer, in their favorite color. In my experience (Viet Nam years) the wooden components of the tools were sometimes natural wood, and other times painted. It would be a different story for German vehicles, of course. Ralph

So glad I "stumbled" upon this video!!! Finally someone who perfectly and easily explains the use of oil paints for weathering! I've got a whole bunch of Abteilung 502 tubes knocking about in my shop and now I can finally start using them with at least some guarantee to success (I hope...). One question remains (maybe you've already touched upon this in one of your other videos): do you apply any varnish on your model before you start weathering or do you apply your oils straight onto the paint? I realize that there's some fierce debate going on about this topic but if anyone can answer it, it's you! Cheers, K-J
@RickLawlerPropaganda
@RickLawlerPropaganda 9 месяцев назад
Hi, I don't generally (if ever) apply any sort of varnish (matte, satin, gloss) on my models before, during or after any of the steps - including decals. I just don't find it necessary and more often than not, a varnish will knock-down, or even eliminate the effects that you might have just established.

Great format Rick. One of my gripes with weathering is not how to, but WHERE! :) this slow format lets me see exactly where are you adding layers of weathering. That pinwash was it done after drying or immediately after?
@RickLawlerPropaganda
@RickLawlerPropaganda Год назад
I'm glad that you like the format, and can follow along and see the layers. The "pin wash" is not really a pin wash, but just the application of a dark tone of paint (oils) along the surface feature...basically drawn, not washed. Everything happens at the same time...no waiting for drying as I progress.
@JedenSiedemDwa

Perfect done. I must remember, I'm 1/72 scale modeller (this is why my channel is named JedenSiedemDwa - OneSevenTwo) - I have one M3 from Mirage Hobby and this will be useful also for that smaller scale, I hope so. All the best for You! ;) Juliusz.

@Rick I dont recall you making chipping. I thought chipping was done prior to weathering. Will it be done on the next video?
@RickLawlerPropaganda
@RickLawlerPropaganda Год назад
No need for chipping on this, at least I don't think it needs it!!? Unless it is a special reference or circumstance, a lot of what I see people using chipping for (along edges) is simple to define the outline of the model. There are other ways of doing that with paint.

Why spend the money and time putting on all that gold then paint over it? Seems like a waste of time and money.
@RickLawlerPropaganda
@RickLawlerPropaganda Год назад
Well, first I enjoy working with the photo etch. Secondly, I believe that the etch adds some finesse to the final presentation. And, finally....I enjoy making models and don't see it as a waste of time nor money. Simply my opinion.

Love your style and technique. When you've finished the base colour, do you seal the paint with varnish before starting the oils?
@RickLawlerPropaganda
@RickLawlerPropaganda Год назад
Eric, no - I generally don't use any type of varnish between layers, or before decals. I don't find it necessary unless I'm trying to find a very specific effect. Thanks for watching.
