Improving in chess is hard. That's the truth. But there are ways to make it easier. 🌟 The book "Perpetual Chess Improvement" by Ben Johnson tries to explore some of these ways. Should you study openings or endgames? Should you play otb, or online, and with what time control? Should you still even use chess books or are the online tools enough to disregard these physical tools? These are important questions, and Ben does a great job in tackling them via anecdotes and experiences of others, as well as studies and logic. 📚 Overall, I like the book a lot, and think many will benefit from reading it. This video is a deeper review of what you might gain by getting a copy for yourself and reading through this book. If you have any questions about the book (or anything else of course!), let me know. Otherwise, good luck in your chess, whether you get the book or not!♟️✨

You showed us the cover for 16 minutes, but I still don't know if I want the book. I'd like to see some of the pages IN the book, more than the brief flip-through at 14:48, because I have bought quite a few chess books that are just "wall of text" on page after page with a few diagrams thrown in. I also bought ONE book that really helped me because it's very well organized, presents thorough explanations with clear diagrams, and has plenty of space for me to write my own notes. That book is Everyone's First Chess Workbook, by Peter Giannatos - highly recommended. It starts with basics like pin-skewer-fork and works up to some advanced tactics and checkmates. Moreover, it's printed on white paper instead of ecru-beige, so I can see the diagrams clearly.

I appreciate the feedback. This was my first book review, so I will implement this in the future. As for this book, you can see some of the writing styles in the preview pages (Ex: www.amazon.com/Perpetual-Chess-Improvement-Practical-World-Class/dp/9083336549). I do find the writing to be very well organized and put, and the diagrams are very clear. If you do not like "wall of text" books though, and prefer many diagrams, this will probably not be too great. It is more of a read-in-the-bedside type of book.

Thanks for the review. It would have been interesting to hear what you perhaps didn’t like about it.

Thank you, and in fact I did consider making a part of the video about potential improvements, but I decided not to. This is because most of the improvements would just change the nature of the book. Ex: Ben could have been more decisive in moments, with picking lichess vs chess.com, or picking one improving philosophy over another, but he often did not. Although for some reasons that would have been useful, as I mentioned in the video, the book I think is more just a compilation of the different approaches and the user can connect to one over the other. So this would be interesting to see Ben's more specific decisions, but it would just be a different type of book. Overall, for what the book aims to be, I think he does an amazing job.

@@ChessGeek1 oh that's fantastic to hear! What field did you choose? I've been taking some free samples courses from Chessly and I'd say they're pretty easy to understand and informative, as I realised only playing bullet isn't gonna make me any better 🥴

@@francescos.7573 Great to hear, I am sure Chessly is great! I am probably going to major in Computer Science, although I have some other interests too, so we will see :) Bullet is not good for improving, but it is fun!

Like or Dislike: Like. I am looking for a book that explores the meta aspects of chess, e.g. philosophy, psychology, culture, history.
@ChessGeek1
@ChessGeek1 7 месяцев назад
This does reference some psychology for sure, and will probably be good, although it does solely focus on specific questions for improvement. I have also heard great things regarding the Seven Deadly Chess Sins by Rowson, although I have not read it yet (it is on my bookshelf though :)). For history there are many choices, but Kasparov's great predecessors series is a good way to go!

❤ Thank you. I really really want to. It is very fun for me to make videos, but college has started in the past 2 months, and it is pretty time-consuming. Still, I will try to find a way :) It is important to me so I will work on it.
