The Nā Pali coast of Kauai is one of the most beautiful places in the world and the Kalalau Trail is a popular way to experience it. This 22-mile out-and-back hike can be seriously dangerous, especially during the rainy season.
We felt like we had already pushed our luck on the way in by crossing the streams when they had water up to our hips. With thunderstorms rolling over us all night, we decided to play it safe and spend one more day at Kalalau Beach waiting out the weather.
While we hadn't planned on a second night, we met some amazing people (in a cave!) and learned a valuable lesson about being over-prepared.
I'm forever thankful for this experience and getting to feel the awe that comes from witnessing the power of mother nature.
Safe travels and happy trails!
You'll see:
- The Kalalau Trail on the Nā Pali coast of Kauai
- Red Dirt Waterfall
- Waimea Canyon
- Kalalau Lookout
My pronunciation of these names may not have been perfect in the video. I tried my best, but please correct me in the comments if I got them wrong and we can all learn together :)
I appreciate you stopping by and hope you enjoy the video. I hope to see you here next time as we finish our Hawaii trip with a week on Maui.
Stay adventurous,
A

Story about my shirt... I stayed at an Airbnb in Santa Barbara the year before this and was living with the most wonderful lady who owned the home. We went on hikes together by the beach and I saw her wearing this Supreme long sleeve with a... busty anime girl on the back. It was quite out of character for this sweet, older German woman. I told her I liked her shirt and she said she would give it to me! One of her previous Airbnb guests had accidentally left it. He was a professional athlete and refused to pay the shipping to have it sent back to him, insisting that she pay even though he had forgotten it there. She was not about to do that so she kept it. Now it's a gift that will forever remind me of her and the amazing time we had together :)

That's wild that he insisted that your host pay to send him HIS personal property. I love that you have it to always remember her by, though. Also, that sunset was gorgeous! Thanks for sharing these beautiful views with us.

Super helpful videos. I watched both of your Kalalau videos. Thanks. I start next weekend and found this to be the most helpful video answering a lot of my questions. Thank you! What is the "bathroom" situation like? Did you go back country style or use the pit toilets? Also, did you pack in/out your TP or was there some there? Thanks.

Hi Bobby! Thanks for watching. I'm glad you found them helpful :) I used the pit toilets (I try to any time they're provided unless they're horrific lol) and did bring my own TP. It was so humid when we went that even though TP was provided, it was sorta a damp mess. Easier to bring some in a Ziploc! I hope the weather holds out for you better than it did for us! You're going to have such an amazing time :) Safe travels!

When you go hiking in the absolute wettest place on Earth... when you go hiking on the trail to NaPali Coast, one of the most dangerous hikes on Earth... Well, is it worth the high risk, the "trending now" hiker dare? The most deaths in that area are hikers trying to cross the stream and not judging the fast-moving water and very slippery rocks... It's that coupled with hikers not bringing enough water and gettnig dehydrated, ironic being surrounded by water but they tell you it's not safe to drink! If the stream isn't risky enough, the very narrow vertical trail by the ocean mountains leaves no room for error, if you lose your footing you can easily lose your life... Unfortunatel,y these ladies love the danger, but it's no fun for those that have to risk their lives to rescue people, and on Kauai it's very expensive when you get the bill!

Everyone has their own tolerance for risk and should know their limits and physical abilities. We understand the risks of some of the areas we travel and are willing to do so to experience beautiful places. We consulted with a park ranger before starting this hike (who gave us the green light and told us what to look out for in terms of flash floods), only crossed the main stream while another couple was there so we could help each other out, and decided not to head back on our scheduled day due to flash flood conditions. There are tons of dangerous places that are tourist destinations (Mount Everest, Angels Landing in Zion NP, Half Dome in Yosemite) and anyone who visits should be aware of those dangers. Personally, I'd choose the danger of a life outside over the everyday dangers of driving a car or walking down a sidewalk at night any day. 😌

@@AprilAdventuring I understand April, you're young... It's a personal choice to risk or court danger to see the sights, but it also puts at high risk those trying to rescue you when things go wrong... In the case of Kauai, quite a few rescue workers lost their lives doing their job, and the huge financial cost isn't covered by travel insurance. That's the trouble with my profession in HOLLYWOOD, we go to exotic places like the NaPali Coast, as I did back in 1976 for KING KONG... only we didn't have to hike to Honopu Beach I believe it was, we were brought in by boat and chopper, but we only saw locals hiking along the dangerous cliffs, adventure-tourism hadn't been trending now then, no internet/social media... So, you could say movies/TV encouraged all this, and now RU-vid and such have taken over! Good luck to you, I'd say "stay safe" but then nothing in life is "safe", as we both know, especially now!
