I have something a little different for you today. In honor of going all-in on RU-vid this year, I wanted to share my experience as a micro creator with just 400 subscribers. Starting a RU-vid channel may be one of the best choices you make for yourself this year.

There are so many days I wished I started my channel (or started taking it more seriously) way sooner. I'm hoping today's video gives you that push if you've been considering creating one.
I'm taking you on a beautiful hike with me through Red Rock Canyon Park in Topanga as we cover six main takeaways from my time on RU-vid. There are so many reasons to start a RU-vid channel, so I hope you'll find some inspiration through my journey here.

"A consistent paycheck is comfortable, but I need more freedom." That's exactly why I started my channel a few years ago. I've struggled to be consistent with it, primarily because it was a lonely endeavor, but you've given me enough of a spark to spend the rest of the evening editing a half-finished video! I've lived in remote rural Alaska on a beautiful homestead for 16 years with a husband that owns a fleet of amazing toys, including a highly modified supercub parked out front. Nobody knows me except my family, basically. No social media other than commenting like this on youtube videos. I walk my doggie almost every day except for extreme cold days. In those 16 years I have seen one other person, one time, on the trails my husband had to make himself. Our closest neighbor. My husband has taken us (two children) on numerous trips to iconic places in the lower '48 like the Grand Canyon, Bryce, Yosemite, Sequoia, Yellowstone, etc. and a lot of places in the Appalachians where he grew up. I am amazed how crowded they are. I see the pictures vloggers take that I recognize and know that if they turn around the other way you're going to see a parking lot with buses full of Chinese tourists, vans, campers, etc. The most solitude we got was rafting on rivers through farming and ranching country where there was no road access. He told me in the beginning how a camera can interfere in the experience, that we were just going to have a lifetime of the outdoors, a National Geographic show that never ends.

Amy, it sounds like you've had an incredible life full of the outdoors, solitude, and adventure. That makes me so happy for you. I totally agree that crowds and cameras can detract from the experience of nature, especially now with the rise of social media and "viral" destinations. I can only hope that my videos educate people on the responsible way to recreate in the outdoors and to provide a mini retreat to those that aren't as fortunate in being able to visit these places for themselves. 🫶🏻 Much love to you and keep on adventuring

I'm also a backpacker in the LA area and I can't say that I think I'll start posting videos on RU-vid but I do love the part about having a visual diary. Love this so much and love how passionate you are about this topic! I've had my channel for a few years but only just started posting consitantly in the last 6 weeks or so...not much has changed in my life too much as I'm working through a backlog of over 10 videos I filmed in the past and never got around to editing 😂 But I'm excited when I get through all that and am able to get outside, travel and make more content!!

You got my sub, April. 👍🏼 I’ve tossed around the idea of starting a channel, but the algorithm wouldn’t know that because I don’t search for anything “how to” or about being a creator. Maybe it was the adventuring aspect? Anyway, glad you came across my feed tonight, and enjoyed the video! All good points you made, and this is a must watch video for aspiring creators, I think. I’m a photographer who will be living on the road 3-4 months of the year, based out of Montana (at least now, originally from Santa Barbara - I recognize all the spots you showed, even the cool donut 🍩 at Ragged Point!). Love camping, hiking, and adventuring (hiked the PCT, ride a bike across the US, hiked Ireland, done the UK 3 Peaks, I just love experiencing the outdoors), so I’m thinking about combining photography, travel, and adventuring. Mix in some stories. Just have fun, and hopefully others find value in it. No dreams of making a penny from it, not interested in that. @AprilAdventuring Hello April, so nice to read your message/answer. Absolutely, it's just a matter of time ... nothing else. Persistance from the heart always pays off. My video 'channel dying ...' was not so much about my complaint, but I see lot's of RU-vidrs having this impression, therefore I created this video to articulate these thoughts and give some hope. My channel is all about encouraging, giving hope and compassion. As I give lot's of guidance in real life, I know very well the thoughts, fear and frustrations of so many people. I word of belief has so much power ..... I believe in the power of good vibes. I think we don't even need an A/B thumbnail testing. Our subconscious has so much power (over time) -> what means: we are stronger than any (AI) algorithm 😉. Continue with lot's of success that you already have. Much love 💕 Matthias 👋 (... I've toyed with the idea of starting a RU-vid channel for years. Life changes things for you sometimes.. but I'll get back to the idea again. I have all the things to do it. Great points all! I started a RU-vid channel during the pandemic that was focused on my long COVID journey because I got tired of people asking how I was or how to cope with their symptoms. I made connections with a bunch of people who were in the same boat but it wasn't sustainable - I don't want to focus on how long COVID disrupted my life. I'm currently thinking about redirecting it and focusing more on my outdoorsy adventures because those are my favorite videos I've done so far. The visual diary mindset is legit.

Roxanne, that's amazing. Good for you recognizing what's working and what's not, and being able to pivot if you need! I've found it's important to have joy in the process, so outdoorsy videos could be a great place to turn -- and the industry/niche is growing rapidly! I was really surprised too! And glad it wasn't so horrible that I'd need to re-film everything haha Believe it or not I didn't do anything in post to clean up the audio! I only adjusted volumes for consistency and left all else the same :) I appreciate you watching and thank you for the question!

Oh my goshhh, we have all been there. Suddenly being a "creator" seems silly or cringe -- but it's absolutely not! Do it for you and because there are people out there that want to see what you have to share. Badlands will make an incredible video! I hope you do turn it into one :) And believe me, I used to hide the fact that I make RU-vid videos because I was afraid of the same thing. People recently started telling me I should make videos about all my travels and I had to say, "oh, I actually already have one 😅" haha! And now I realize people think it's really cool that I do this 🥰 You got this! If you make a Badlands video (or any other), send it my way! I'd love to follow your journey. Happy adventuring!

That’s so awesome to hear, Evelyn! When I first started, I was using Thematic since I didn’t have to pay for a subscription. RU-vid also has their own audio library you can use for free to avoid any copyright issues! ru-vid.com Now I’m using Epidemic Music which has a monthly subscription fee but better music imo. Totally not necessary at the start! Let me know if you do end up starting! I’d love to check out your videos and support

I started RU-vid in 2006 and had millions of views and got hit with copyright and violations from people copying my videos and taking my monetization. So I restarted n 2010 and my monetization got banned again from people stealing my own videos and putting it as their own and making money off my work semi just gave up

Kudos to you for doing the thing. I'm confused. At time of this video you have 580 subscribers. You're not even monetized and boasting about "This is my life now." This can't be supporting you or did you leave that part out? Anyway, nice video and good points. Just confused how this is working besides a fun hobby and the other reasons you mentioned. Thank you for the well wishes! You're totally right in that my RU-vid channel is not currently monetized and it is absolutely not supporting me right now. As I mentioned in the video, content creators tend to have multiple streams of income and I do make money outside RU-vid ad revenue -- but hopefully that will be an added stream one day! RU-vid did start as a hobby while I was working my 9-5, but I'm now treating it like a business (hence the "going all in" on it this year). This video was in no way meant to come across as boasting. My channel is something I'm proud of but the lifestyle, friendships, opportunities, and community I've built around it are what really changed my life. And that's what I hope people will take from this video as inspiration if they're considering starting their own channel :) I appreciate you being here and wish you all the best!

And believe me when I say it's all a learning process :) No one knows anything when they start out and that's half the fun!
