After watching this I went and bought an 8” 3 jaw puller from harbor freight for $21. It worked great, just like in this video. Just an idea in case anyone doesn’t have $140 to put down for a deposit on a rental.
Yeah, this is the nice easy situation, where the wheel is just a bit stuck on the axle. I have had situations where even a 20T bottle jack won't move them. That's when the torch, the chains, the 4x4s and the 4lb sledgehammer are needed.
Yep, I had one just recently and the gear puller would not have looked at it. In the end I had to use a drill to remove the rim and carefully cut the seized on hub on both sides as well as having to grind down to the top of the key before there was any movement. It fought me every millimetre of the way off even using a chisel and hammer. No amount of WD40 helped free it.
Oh my goodness, I can't believe this worked. SO EASY!! And free. I have been trying to break free my riding mower's flat tire for more than a week. Finally went to Auto Zone and rented a gear puller. $130 deposit, to be returned in full when the tool is returned. The POP when the rust broke free was loud and startling, but it worked great. A few things I would add to the video. First, the tool that I rented had a point at the tip, so I needed to put something between the gear puller and the axle to act as a spacer. You could use a nut or a socket, but I just grabbed a small box wrench and that worked great. Second, I have never used a gear puller before, so I had no idea how the arms worked. During the first few tries the tool kept angling sideways. I realized that I had not tightened down the bolts on the arms. Then I realized that I needed to tighten both sets of bolts on each arm, and they had to be symmetrical. If I had it to do over again, I would start out by tightening down the bolts closest to the center before anything else, and be certain that these three arms were extended out symmetrically. Then I would loosen the distant bolts so that the arms moved freely, place the arms on the wheel such that the central rod extended straight into the axle, and then tighten down the distant bolts. With practice, I think I could do this in less than 5 minutes. My rim did not bend.
Also, you do not have to turn the mower on its side. I removed the front wheel with the front end of the mower jacked up just a few inches off the ground. It's probably easier to coordinate the 3 arms of the tool when holding the puller vertically rather than horizontally, but I didn't want to turn my mower on its side. Jacking it up a little worked just fine.
I did my self a favor I listed to you and your video. it took me a while with out the jaw adjustable puller I would have had to dump the unit. I looked all the other sites yours was the best. Thank you for your input and the tool is free when you bring it back. Thank you
Wow this was awesome. Watched other videos using acetylene torches, sledgehammer with chisel type attachments& home contraptions. Headed to Auto Zone in a few hours. Thanks loads. Working smarter not harder pays off. 👌
I have to totally disagree with this method. I just used a brand new 8” gear puller exactly like the one in the video and followed his procedure. DO Not attempt this on a seized wheel to the shaft. Your rim will bend. Thanks to this video I have to purchase a new rim, plus I’m out the gear puller. No loaners at my store.
Stick a torch to that thing and break out the hammer and wood. Plus! NEVER TURN YOUR MOTOR SIDEWAYS LIKE THIS DUDE!!! could have all kinds of mechanical issues on start up. This dude knows how to use a puller but has NO IDEA about engines...
I am trying this right now , so far no luck. Age of mower makes a big difference. Letting it soak in penetrating oil. Will try heat next. Thanks for the video.
The wheel needs to be pulled from the hub and not the outer rim, to have some level of leverage and extra torque without risk of bending the rim. This may work on wheels that are not that locked onto the shaft. I tried this also, but I opted to weld some heavy-duty washers on the edge of the wheel hub to allow a manual or hydraulic 3 jaw puller to be more effective on a seized wheel.
Heading for the parts store tomorrow got 4 stuck wheels need the back ones bad. is also a J Deere mower I have been careful not to damage the wheel and got no where I will be vary grateful if this works tomorrow. I hope rust will not trump over the puller. Will also use Blaster can't hurt. Yes I have seized wheels I believe but will not be upset if this doesn't work will try to soak the axel also. well worth a try.
Sounds and looks easy. But I guarantee you it doesn't always work. I have one that I have done everything I can think of and it is still stuck on the axle. I have used PB Blaster, heat, wheel puller, And drilled through the wheel and used my Sawzall to cut down to the axle key. The SOB is STILL stuck on the axle.!
I'm almost there with you. It's annoying as all hell. I look like an idiot in my front yard the last few days whacking at this wheel heating it pb blasting smoke for it not to budge a millimeter. It's sickening I want to incinerate the mower at this point
another alt way of doing it if you have one is to get an Air Hammer with a flat head fitting not the chisel or punches can get this fitting for under 20 bucks and use it on the rims inner side it should work it off along with some spray lubricant.
I'm working at present on removing both tires from a Craftsman tiller. The first one finally came off with a gear puller as used here. But it was a lot of work. The one that I did get off took about two hours with no damage to the rim. The other one immediately bent even before I got into the extreme work used on the other. My suspicion is that I was dealing with two different steels, one decent hard, and the other rather pliable. On the soft one, I'll be using a gas torch. Watch the various guys on UT repair old equipment and heat, maybe red-hot heat, usually does the trick when the bolts and parts are stuck. Remember: safety first in area, other combustionables and process.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I have seen the those videos where they are pounding on the back of the rim. Why beat on it when you can just pull it off? I use a lot of penetrating oil, but I haven't ever bent or poked a hole in a rim, yet. Thank you again.
Seemingly great vid, but I just bent my rim in 3 places and tire hasn’t budged! Luckily I was able to hammer rim even and tire stil holds air, but I’m bac to square one w/ an old tire/ rim situation!🤨😩 *Tried heat, wd40 etc…
Tried it, but mine were stuck so bad it bent the rims, very badly. My mower had 100 hours on it. It's a shame this is such a bad issues with these. If I would have known a tire change was such a big deal I would have checked it muuuuch sooner.
James, what are you talking about? This man in the video, like most of us that came here to watch, have a rim that is seized to the axle shaft. Absolutely nothing to do with removing a tire from a rim. I repeat, the rim is rusted to the shaft and to remove the rim you must first deflate tire and be able to install puller around rim outside diameter. So if you have a tire that is stuck to rim, your watching and negatively commenting on the wrong repair. Or your just searching you tube and negatively commenting on everything cause you don't know anything about mechanical repairs. With that said, I suggest you take your machine to a man, like this one that is trying to help others and let a profession repair your machine.
Why pay $70 to rent when you can stop by your local Harbor Freight and get a Three-Jaw 8" Gear puller for $20? If it breaks, it's got a warranty for replacement. Save the extra trip and wasted time taking it back. Still get the job done and you got a tool in hand if you ever need it again on the cheap.
I'm about ready to just change the tire on the rim without even taking it off the lawn mower it might be a pain in the ass but it's a pain in the ass either way
video looks great, great job. im afraid ill bend the rim it is stuck with rust so bad. soaked w pb blaster overnight. im renting the puller. im planning on drilling two holed in a flat spot of the rim. im planning on using bolts and nuts in holes, maybe 5/16”. to have puller arms pull it. im still puzzled how to get puller arm tips to catch onto bolt or nut heads and not keeping off. anyone have any good ideas. oh yeah im going to add heat?
didnt work here either.out 20 dollars for tool and gas.bent wheel didnt come off wound up costing me more now i need axle and wheels.had to cut off wheels ruining axle and opening bigger can of worms.
I will bet you floated the valves on that mower flipping it on the side. It will never run as good as it did again. They are not made to flip on the side for that reason. Bad move.
I had a pro put a tube in my 2021 Craftsman Mower's back wheel. I had to smack the tire (bolt removed) high, & low to get the tire off the axle... My problem is getting the tire back on the axle... even greased the axle, and I can't get the wheel started to go on to the axle. Any suggestions? And I don't have an acetylene torch.
@@MOE13576 I'm here to tell him and everyone else that he is doing it wrong. There are plenty of other post here that warns other people not to do it the way he is doing. Do not tip your riding mower on its side.
Congratulations on your good fortune of a successful wheel removal. However, it's poor sport to mock others not so fortunate to simply have a stuck wheel as compared to a seized wheel. Frankly, yours is the only video I've seen where that light duty puller could have succeeded.
@@toddburton5548 4 1/2 inch grinder and enough profanity to peel the rest of the crappy paint off the mower. used a sledge with a hook and chain to snatch it off. No primer on bare metal.
It's a rim removal video not tire or wheel cause what you take off is the rim from the axle the rubber wheel isn't on the axle the rim is A lot of people and companies word stuff wrong

I pound the shit out of mine know why because you can't see the back of the rims anyways and because i don't have a puller So hammer metal pole and old oil no heat hit the shaft one good time then start pounding that rim off rotate the tire then pound again
