RV Odd Couple - Just like you did with the truck and trailer, you need to research going out on the sand! Weight is not your friend! You want floatation to stay up on the sand. Lowering the air pressure makes the tire profile rounder and bigger to provide more floatation. Those squared off tires are looking for trouble. My Jeep and old full size Blazer used to get lowered to 8 lbs! Refilling is then problematic as big tires take a while to fill with only a small compressor. Finally, always have a long handled shovel, boards you can place under the wheels or under a good Jack, and a good tow strap of your own. The Cape Cod National Seashore is a beautiful and pricey beach to visit but your rig would not have passed the inspection for a sticker. As always, keep learning and stay safe!
@jaytibbles2223
@jaytibbles2223 5 лет назад
I have a folding shovel from Walmart! Does the job and does not take up much space. It is in my emergency kit with the lug wrenches, tire plugs and 8 ton jack. I am 75 and do not PLAN to make all such repairs BUT my tow vehicle picked up an ALLEN WRENCH. I had to drill the hole in the tire to make it wide enough for the plug so I could drive to the dealer for new tires. They were 14 years old and had come with the truck when I bought it.

That plus also a kinetic recovery rope. If you ever check out a channel called Matt’s towing. He does off-road recovery in a jeep for people that get stuck in Sand dunes in Utah. he’s pulled out a large pick up truck with a boat with that jeep using nothing but a Kinetic tow rope. It’s designed to stretch and then snatch you out using the stored up energy like a giant bungee cord.

Old Southern California surfer here! That is one of the very few beaches where you can drive on the sand. I've driven hundreds of "sand miles" here and in Baja California (where there are NO tows), here's the best tips I can give you. #1 Do the sand tour at mid- tide going to low tide. #2 Drive below the high tide line. Because it gets wet twice a day the sand is hard/compacted. You were driving high in the always dry soft stuff. #3 Carry a small shovel and a couple of 3-4foot long 2x6 boards. You can dig out in front of the drive tires and wedge the board under the tires and slowly get out of the rut (backing out usually works best). This is also works for off road touring in the deserts. #4 You did this one perfectly! Keep smiling, have a chuckle or two and mark it up as just another fantastic adventure. And yes, welcome to our California!!!! Andy & Kim

Just a tip: Whereas low tire pressure will help in sand. Once stuck, you can use a rug, coat, old shirt, etc. and place it under the drive tires. Also always clear out the sand from in front and back of the tires, so you are not trying to climb out, you just roll out. A lot of times, it is enough to get you rolling and once rolling, DON'T STOP!

It was very unnerving. All of the sudden I wished that we were on a paved road! It was very silly of us because if we had been prepared and lowered the air pressure on the tires we would have been fine. So if you do drive on sand, bring the Viair! :-)

RV Odd Couple Don’t feel bad. Last summer in North Dakota I went up a hill on a forestry road looking for a boondock site only to come to a closed gate. I had to back our trailer down the hill with drop offs on both sides to a point where I could get turned around. Here’s a little advice from us farm boys as we have many Dully trucks out here , they do one thing they pull trailers, and even though they may have four-wheel-drive they get stuck much easier . They are in no way comparable to a standard four wheel truck and are even less capable than a standard rear wheel only, because of the tires A dully is thought of this way ,even though it has four-wheel-drive you drive it as if it only had 2 Wheel Drive or you will get in trouble, because it will never , except on bare pavement or a hard , service provide any traction.The other guy got stuck because he was dragging 15,000 pounds on two narrowed wheels on that trailer you would’ve gotten stuck much easier with the Dully Pulling that trailer .Sand is a absolute no-no with a dully I’ve been stuck in even better conditions than you were in ... I have personally unstuck half a dozen Dooleys some in 4 inches of snow on their driveway... The suspension and very hard tires with little traction are a detriment

About 20 years ago I use to go 4X4 with a friend of mine down in Puerto Penasco Mexico. I learned to air down all the way to 15 lbs (from about 35 lbs). Made a gigantic difference plus a year later I put differential lockers on which are awesome. The tides down there are really extreme and we'd see at least a couple of trucks every night get caught up and go a good 10 feet under the water. Yep I remember seeing the trucks completely underwater with the headlights still on. In the morning we'd go back and check out the now unsubmerged vehicle. Always a complete loss. I think my friend would charge $50-$80 per tow. $375 is cheap when compared to completely losing your truck.

Glad you mentioned the AIR DOWN TIRES. And you have a dually. The national seashore in cape cod Massachusetts makes you get an inspection and a permit to drive the beach. You have to know how to airdown to 20 pounds. Your tires are real floppy but they stay on the rim. Very easy to get stuck if you don’t practice.

Oh wow, that’s even worse to learn the city is in partnership. Man that sounds corrupt and should be FORBIDDEN. You learned why the tow companies despise the crew of guys helping everybody, they’re life savers, really good people. They are literally people just like you and your wife simply offering and helping to tow people. Your truck is a beast and would be EXCELLENT at towing people out and it’s a lot of FUN. Here’s a tip, if you do find your self towing some stuck in the sand you can not be afraid to give her gas. That’s the hardest thing to remember because people are always automatically worried they’re going to snap their drive lines or somethings going to break. You won’t break anything. It’s really cool, there is a guy, his Chan Got Sand is all videos of folks helping each other on that beach, pulling each other out. Really neat channel. I don’t blame you for being nervous and ready to get your truck out away from the water. My wife and I were just at Pacific City just north of Lincoln City on the Oregon coast driving on the beach and I had a close call. Instantly panic set in because the tide was coming in but luckily I was able to rock it back and forth and it popped up and out. Love your channel, have a great evening.

Another note: never drive on soft sand. Air down tires a must. And drive on hard pack and circle around and park your class A, Fifth wheel, or whatever 2 wheel drive rig on a slight downslope. Then leaving is slow and easy! A shovel , plywood 2’ x 4’ ( this is for the brutal wind conditions to protect the undersides of truck, rv, campsite on beach) then you can use plywood to level and ramp out of trouble. Also never pay money for this☹️

I love you guys and your videos. I grew up camping at pismo with my family (tent & a large teardrop). We never drove on the beach,. Instead we went clamming, played in the dunes and just generally were family and kids. Always camped at the state park. Back then (late 50s early 60s) there were few if any off-road vehicles so it was safe for kids to climb and slide down the dunes. Enjoy your time there. As you travel north in California yo should seriously look to visiting Yosemite and Sequoia-Kings Canyon. You may not be able to find a spot in the parks to accommodate a rig your size, but I know there’s a thousand trails campground just outside of Yosemite. Both of these places will give you an appreciation of nature and creation.

@bleeckertb
@bleeckertb 5 лет назад
weight in the back is an urban legend. you want light weight and flotation and that is why you lower your tire pressure to flatten out the tires and give them more area which improves traction and surface area for flotation. weight in the back come from the cold winter states, rubber get hard when it's cold and can't conform to the small bumps for traction, more weight forces it to, with modern snow tires this is no longer needed

Aww man...i used to be a local and would be at the dunes all the time...100% of the times if i got stuck someone would come by and offer to pull me out and i would always return the favor if i ever saw anyone stuck. Sorry you had to pay so much

Bad timing! Wind was kicking up something horrible that night. There wasn't many out there. If my wife and 3 year weren't in the truck, I would have waited longer... Got to meet the "Jerk Pirates" the weekend after for a beach clean-up! It was awesome! Love those Guys/Gals

that sucks y'all got stuck. might want to invest in some good aggressive all terrain tires. that would help with not getting stuck, it'll raise the ride height a little bit and so on and so forth.

This was a silly mistake on our part. We should have aired down. Lesson Learned. :-)

We've been 4x4ing for a long time and are paranoid about getting stuck! We carry a lot of 4x4 recovery gear but we still stay off beaches with the truck. Our tires are usually aired up to the max for towing and I never want to go through the hassle of airing down for off-road. Glad you all made it out before the tide came in!

I saw a couple of cool setups on off roader vehicles, with the bolting in of an additional compressor that takes engine power and inflates your tires. I *LOVED* the idea! Just never implemented it. Oh, and I was charged $3500 to get my SUV back from a collapsed trail on the side of a cliff. $2000 for the backhoe rental, and $150/hr for 3 guys. OUCH!!! (they did bend my axle and frame pulling me out), adding an additional several hundred dollars in damage to repair.) I was told someone else was rescued from the same place previously and they were over $5000, due to their broken axle, frame damage when dragging it out, etc. (I think they were trying to cheer me up, but it didn't work)
