When I first finished restoring the car we drove it using the factory Ansen shifter and we were never certain that the 2 to 3 upshift worked. That was after fully rebuilding the shifter. I don't know how well Ansen shifters worked when new but I can see how Hurst filled a need with their Comp Plus. Putting that in my car was a game changer!
Thanks Paul! I hope this helped. I included two graphics in the video listing the lever part numbers used by Hurst with the lever part numbers listed. Hope this helps sort out the reverse lever. Shoot me a note if I can be of help. Love these cars! Neil
I have a 1957 Golden Hawk project car 3 speed O.D., Mostly disassembled. The P.O. passed. It has the same bucket seats and Ansen floor shifter as your car. Some custom features obviously as I believe the engine to be rebuilt. Now questioning whether the trans. was swapped as well. Did Ansen make a shifter for the 3 speed? Appears they did.
You could get a 3 spd manual trans in a Golden Hawk but it would have been a column shift, not a floor shift. I am not aware of any Studebaker with a 3 spd floor shifter. All would have been column shifters. Ansen did make 3 spd floor shifters for other manufacturers. One I had to deal with was on a Gremlin. The crossover shift was never clean. You had to be very definite about it. You might be able to adapt something from a different make or just look for an aftermarket 3spd floor shifter.
