Global Montreal - Student expelled for exposing security flaw
Mon, Jan 21: Terry Cutler CTO and Certified Ethical Hacker with Digital Locksmiths discusses a student at Montreal's Dawson College who pays the price for finding a major flaw in his school's computer system. Mike Armstrong reports.
Terry Cutler is a co-founder of Digital Locksmiths, Inc.(www.digitallocksmiths.ca) -- an IT security and data defense firm based in Montreal -- and serves as the company's Chief Technology Officer. Terry's career in the IT security space prior to his joining Digital Locksmiths has been long and distinguished. He was most recently a Premium Support Engineer for Novell in Canada where he analyzed network vulnerabilities and transitioned security technologies into production, and before that he held digital security leadership roles with a number of large corporations. Through the International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants (EC-Council), Terry earned the rank Certified Ethical Hacker in recognition of his having mastered a range of industry best practices to thwart hackers by knowing how they think and operate from the inside out. In addition to being a licensed private investigator in Canada, Terry is an active member of both the High Technology Crime Investigation Association and the Center for Internet Security. An internationally known author, trainer, speaker, and security consultant, Terry has appeared in numerous television and radio programs and is very active on the conference circuit. Glad to be of help, and I see that you chose a very good title this time. It couldn't really be better.

Just did some additional Web searches to see what thr is for some updates and learned that the vendor of the student records system is or will be offering Hamed Al-Khabaz a scholarship so that he can pursue his studies at a private college and also a part-time job in IT security. Meanwhile, the school directorship maintains a narrow-minded, pointy-headed-boss (PHB) position that the expulsion must be maintained; rather than graciously, say, accepting that Hamed's intentions were never criminal.

Liked and added to my Internet topics playlist. But I'll add that it would've been better to give this video a much better title for the title presently assigned says absolutely nothing about what the video is about and the title is all or almost the only thing seen when doing RU-vid searches. Little else is shown.

If Hamed Al-Khabaz was to work jointly with the vendor, then he should be paid for the time he dedicates to testing the system, for, and after all, whenver he finds flaws in the vendor's product, the vendor will profit by correcting its software system's flaws and Al-Khabaz should get a share of these profits that'd be due to his work. Otherwise, he shouldn't be required to work with the vendor. Instd, he'd just work at the school based on an agreement solely with the school; if it's possible.

Hamed Al-Khabaz should be immediately reinstated and allowed to continue his studies. And he should be allowed to continue to occasionally test the schools student records system as often as he wishes but while doing so according to an agreement between him and the school. Imo, the third-party software vendor, Sky... whatever the name is, doesn't need to be involved, except to be told that if it wants to continue to be the provider for the school, then it must allow independent testing.
