Studio 54: In the late 1970s, at the peak of the disco dancing and music trend, the building was renamed after its location, and became a world-famous nightclub and discotheque. The nightclub founders spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on professional lighting design, and kept many of the former TV and theatrical sets, in the process creating a unique dance club that became famous for its celebrity guest lists, restrictive (and subjective) entry policies (based on one's appearance and style), and open club drug use.

I actually danced in studio 54 in my early twenties. And there was this beautiful girl who asked me to dance and of course I followed her to the dancefloor. One of the bartenders later said: That was Gia. Gia Carangi. A topmodel. Can you imagine that? I didn't even know she was so famous. But she sure was gorgeous.

I wanted to go here so much. I knew about it when I was in my teens. It was so intriguing, but when you’re a closeted gay boy growing up in Detroit, it wasn’t going to happen. Then when I was 20, I discovered Backstreet in Detroit. It was 20 minutes from my home, and it was the closest I’d ever get. Then, my folks found out, and I was thrown out. I left with only a suitcase. I got a job at a high end restaurant, working my way up to lead on the floor. Then my fantasies started to become reality. I was clubbing almost every night, but at work I started meeting everyone who was anybody in the 80’s. I met everyone from Liza Minnelli to Andy Warhol. I partied with the Village People, and met Divine in her dressing room. It was a heady time, I even dated a celebrity for a second when he appeared in a play in Detroit. It wasn’t fun because of autograph seekers. I smile whenever I think of that time. I survived it, barely, then met the man of my dreams in 1990. We’re still together 30 years later, I think he saved my life. It was as glittery and loud as you could imagine, there will never be another time like that. It was a fun decade.

I worked for Rubell and Schrager after they got out of prison and opened Palladium....it was very similar as an 80's scene, and they cleaned up as Rubell died from his lifestyle, and Schrager thrived as he invested into chic hotels... I made my way into the downtown music scene while working... I saw Rubell always wacked out late at night(we couldn't close until he left), and Schrager was low-key.....the building no longer exists but I have my memories of taking uptown girls home to my Lower East Side apartment.....for a young man in his 20's it was a hell of a time.....AIDS did kill the nightlife in NYC, and then the clubkids like Michael Alig took over......it was all dead by 1995

The club space was used again in 1989 when the owner of The Ritz moved his club there and I had the pleasure of performing there with my band 10 years after the Studio 54 heyday.....I'll have those memories as long as I live we did our own thing just like the disco days but at that point it was alternative music that brought the people in....the owner of The Ritz also went to prison for tax evasion and money laundering it was the norm.....almost 10 years to the day Rubell/Schrager went down

As a music aficionado born I was born too late. I have several places where I wish I could have been over the years Ciros, The Sands for The Rat Pack, The Whiskey, Laurel Canyon 1960’s, Woodstock, The Cotton Club, Studio 54, and the original Copacabana in Rio. I’m sure that I’m missing several immortal places that made music, changed lifestyles, and made history but I’m just thinking off the top of my head. How electrifying each place had to have been, the people, the atmosphere, and just the sense that history was in the air. The music made it all possible. Thank you to each, and every venue, person, idea, and musical note…it all made my life meaningful, bearable, and many times joyful!!!!

This video is more vivid for me than the best LSD of the early seventies. I was one of the four main bartenders during the last third of its initial run, working even the closing night, Feb. 2, 1980. I had the presence of mind to actually swipe the liquor license - a copy posted by law at the bar. The young faces of the glitterati are here (a few I actually dated), for me to recall all the stories one must never tell. Most celebrities are still alive. Divulging personal info would be insanely self-serving and a betrayal, yet this film nails the overall effect. Oh, my, my, my .. the dismissers and judgers have little knowledge to base their limited opinions on and they will never get that knowledge). Well done. Scott Utley LA CA USA

I was there once when I was 18 years old. At the time, my best friend's dad took her there for her birthday, and she invited me along. Her dad, as I recall, was a record producer. At any rate, I have some vague memories of the place. I danced with a guy on the stage (dancing area) and remembered while dancing looking up, and in the loft area was my friend looking down at me. I felt a little guilty because it appeared to me that I was having a better time than she was on the night of her birthday. I didn't see people taking drugs or having sex, nor do I recall seeing prominent people. Overall, I was just a naive kid who was having fun dancing at a notorious place. Got in twice out of 6 attempts so i consider that pretty lucky. Got in because i was a bodybuilder and handsome(i think this was why) one thing alot of folks get mixed about especially ones that didnt get it all thought you had to be rich and or famous which yes would help bigtime however wasnt always the case. Depended on looks, style, celebrity, attirude and vibe. Place was wild though, the movie doesnt do it justice as it doesnt capture the aura but yea it was a naughty place forsure. Thats what isnt stressed enough...yes people know about it but it was everywhere, almost too much in a way. I remember seeing quite a few celebs during my nights i got in but they still had their own areas and wasnt as simple as walking up and bugging them like alot think...yes on the dance floor you could get close but they werent having any of that paparazzo/bugging them at all and rightfully so. Basically everyone who was in was an equal other than the sectioning for sitting but it was great all around. My fondest memory was steve rubell grabbing my biceps and admiring them everytime hed come by and say some comment about them. Im not gay but of course a compliment stuck and felt nice. Fun nights good partying and no bs like nowadays. No fighting shootings stabbings etc...everyone just letting loose and having a blast. ALOT AND I MEAN ALOT of drugs but people were mature about it and seemed to control their highs very well. Anyways i miss those days but will never forget that feeling when steve pointed to me and let me in, you truly felt like a star. Rip steve rubell, you threw one hell of a party!

Knew a very good looking guy in Ks that saved as much money as he could for a year, went to school to be a bar tender, bought all new high end clothes & a newer car then headed for studio 54 in pursuit of landing a job. He came back about 3 weeks later financially broke & mentally broken too saying he couldn't even get in the door in order to dance & party for a night. You could see the devastation in his eyes. Got to believe things happen for a reason or don't in this case. Probably would've ended up with a disease he couldn't get rid of or even worse back in the day one that could take you completely out of the game called life.

I was here when the video was first uploaded. Its great to read all the comments now bc its as close as Im going to get to relive this great time in my life. There was nothing like it. If anyone remembers a club in the 20’s near 7th ave that was a warehouse- you had to take a freight elevator to get up. It was a huge open space and the guys served Oreo cookies on silver platters to the patrons- please list it. I have been trying too remember the name for decades! I thought it was el Jardin but that was another place I went to in Douglaston owned by Steve rubell. Near where I lived at a country club. Fantastic place but it closed after a year or so. I loved how the guys got dressed upo to dance. Dancing was the best at discos. And getting all dressed up in my dance dresses and heels

I was just a kid in the 70’s so the closest thing to this was the Limelight in Manhattan, to which my girl and I were there just about every Saturday for about a year. It was an absolutely crazy and magical place and I was told that 54 was 100 times crazier.

I came of age in the Disco Seventies and it was truly over the top - clubs desperately tried to emulate the Studio 54 vibe, some better than others - we dressed up and partied down - Sylvester's "Mighty Real" comes to mind (perfect) and Taste of Honey's "Boogie Oogie" was also the classic stereotypical disco song - and, of course, hearing Donna Summer's "Last Dance" meant last call at the bar and the party moved somewhere else. It wasn't all great but when it was, oof!

The night clubs today can't hold a candle to 54. Club goers today don't dance nor party. The guys Stand around watching the girl's dancing with each other. Clubs close at 2am. The woman are stuck up and the men are sexually frustrated and want to fight the next guy for no reason. The club scene today have no love or excitement. The magic is gone.
