This is part 1 of an apartment design series, in which I show you my process of designing a new studio apartment from start to finish. In this episode, we move in and start laying out the flow of the space. I take you through my decision making process of how I decide were each piece should go.

The first rule of placing a mirror is, what will you see reflected in it ? With the natural light you also got Sarah's books, beautiful. Great space for you two, anxious to hear how you found it. And a door to a balcony (what a change from your NYC AC unit) Welcome home.

This makes me realize how wonderful my life is as a minimalist. A real minimalist. I have no bed (floor sleeper), no tv, no couch (floor sitter and wooden bench for guests), no bookshelves (Kindle), and no table (floor). I have 600 sq feet, two walk in closets, full kitchen, small dining room, nice bath and vanity area, etc. and my place looks like a mansion! It is STUFF that may make it cozy, but it also makes a small place tiny especially for two people. Either him or the STUFF would have to go!

What a nice upgrade from your place on the Bowery :) House slippers are rocking, Sarah. That mirror will help you guys decide on a black, grey or white t- shirt very nicely. You can reach the fridge while laying in bed, a very exciting convenience at certain moments.

Hey Cody I really love this layout. The fact that you guys chose an open box feel, i think is a really great idea as it allows you to be more creative in with the apartment. The way you guys chose to fit every major piece around the apartment I think is clever. It allows you to see where to add in all thee other smaller pieces together. I really love your chose of design. How long will you guys gonna be staying in Portland....I still love you guys. Hey Sarah🤗 Shout out all the way from South Africa!😀....eagerly waiting to see your future vlogs of Porland Oregon.

I can't wait to see what other ideas you have for your apartment. I think you have a wonderful logical mind for designing a spaces. I was wondering is the Murphy bed bolted to the wall or floor? And if so does it leave a big hole when you remove it?

It’s anchored to the wall with regular screws, so not a huge hole.

Glad you made it to Portland (or PDX as many of us call it) and enjoyed your cross country journey though I was expecting a video on the Bay Area. That said, I'm surprised you went for another studio instead of a 1 or even 2 bedroom unit? Portland is expensive but not nearly as expensive as Manhattan and I've lived in both. I assumed you'd find some intriguing place in the heart of the Pearl District (where I used to live) or perhaps even rent a house in SW. In any event, enjoy the Rose City - because it is quite a city.
@CodyJensen
@CodyJensen 5 лет назад
Thanks! If we wanted to continue paying what we were paying in NYC we could get a bigger place but we moved to drastically reduce our expenses. I also prefer a large studio over a small 1 bed.
@johntbell

@@CodyJensen Fair enough. So many new places for you to discover and enjoy - from parks to Powell's to cool third-wave coffee joints. And though you complained about the weather and cold of New York, Portland can be a bit overcast, dreary and rainy - especially in fall and winter. I remember when it rained for three straight weeks - during the spring. Every morning, awoke to rain coming down. That said, I still love the city and miss it. I don't think there is any city in the U.S. like it and you made a great and inspired choice to move there. And there's a lot going on. I was last in Portland last October and I'm coming back in two weeks - and already have a list of new places to try that have opened since my last visit.

Congrats on the new apartment Cody and Sarah :-) The mirror closet door is amazing. What is the square footage of this new apartment? Are the 1 bedrooms in Portland expensive? For some reason, I thought you both would get a 1 bedroom apartment in Portland because rent is most likely cheaper in Portland than in NYC. Actually, I love minimalist living so if living in a studio makes sense for you then so be it :) This apartment is definitely bigger than your NYC apartment plus, hello BALCONY!!! I can’t wait to see how the final design of your apartment will look. So far, I love the layout.
