In this video I see if I can get an interesting sound out of an Ovation 1867 recorded direct. Even though it is not a really good sound, all my work with Robert Fripp and various members of the League of Crafty Guitarists (Guitar Craft) has given me an odd soft spot for that sound sometimes.

Growing up in the 90s watching MTV Unplugged, that direct piezo sound is how I got used to acoustic guitars sounding. It’s not a natural sound. But it’s a nostalgic sound for me.

I kinda like the Ovation 1867 Legend’s unique tone too… admittedly, also as a Robert Fripp fan - saw him perform live with the League of Crafty Guitarists in Chicago back in 1988 or 1989, in fact! Sometimes an eccentric sound is exactly what hits the spot!! 🤗

That direct sound is great for blending with mic tracks to get that separation.

I record often with a vintage 12 string ovation micing with AKG condenser and a Shure dynamic. It really does sound good! Especially when building a wall of sound.

Big and bold sound. Reminds me of Craig Chaquico, who is known for recording his acoustic guitar direct. One of the few, but He did pretty good with it!.

I usually record a direct track along with the mic's in case I want to re-amp or trigger something fx-wise. RCM inspired me to use a 57 once for a different flavor for an acoustic solo where the rhythm track had 2 mic's on it.

Great vid ronan! Lately we have been micing a fishman acoustic amp to get a different sound, we are happy with it, gives it a little edge! And i dont have to quarantine him in an iso with my neumann all the time! Cheers ronan :)

I record direct into Garage Band via Alesis Mullti-Mix 4 and it sounds amazing! My ovation has the OP pro/studio preamp.

sometimes recording both mic and direct is nice blending in some of the attack of the DI the brightness sometimes cuts thru nicely in the mix especially when you have big rock drums

Hey dude, haven't you heard of 'mic modelling?" The Fishman Aura Spectrum has Ovation images in addition to compression and eq. You could have saved yourself a lot of work by simply plugging in.
