Studio Monitors tested in this shootout:
Focal SM9: vintageking.com/focal-sm9-pair...
Barefoot MicroMain 45: vintageking.com/barefoot-sound...
Micro Main 35 Gen 2: vintageking.com/barefoot-sound...
ATC SCM25A: vintageking.com/atc-loudspeake...
PMC twotwo.8: vintageking.com/pmc-loudspeake...
Today I want to share a studio monitor shootout I recently did with Vintage King.
When looking for a new set of studio monitors, testing, and reading reviews online, most of time you will find about 3-5 top contestants that would make good options for you. So how can you tell which of these speakers are the perfect fit?
With this video, I want to try to help you to answer that question: I visit Vintage Kings showroom in L.A. and we test 5 different sets of speakers in the mid - high-end segment. Each of these speakers have received great reviews and are go-to choices in this price range.
In the shootout producer/mixer Alex Oana and I point out the different tonal characteristics of each of the speakers, their optimal use and benefits depending on the style of music you're working in. We also and discuss which speakers we would prefer in a producing/recording vs. mixing environment.
Alex shares great insights into different factors that will impact the sound of your monitors: Speaker placement, room treatment and size, different monitor designs and cabinet characteristics, 2 way speakers vs. 3 way speakers and more.
Produce Like A Pro is a website which features great tips to help the beginning recordist make incredible sounding home recordings on a budget.

I just find it so funny that a serious talk lasting an hour about mixing and sound is filled with a buzzing sound all throughout.

The really funny thing is when they test studio monitors and have no idea how to install it. In the video the PMC Twotwo8 was installed incorrectly, the tweeter should be inside according to the user manual. Obviously in that position you can't expect it to perform properly.

electromagnetic interference happens when you have electricity ⚡️ running through 24 and up ⬆️ magnetic 🧲 fields ; drivers etc ! Running an analog studio with a bunch of outboard and multiple monitors has been a great lesson for me regarding this phenomenon!

I havent visited this channel in a while (I've been busy with visual production stuff) , but I knew i would eventually come back to rewatch this video..I started considering a monitor upgrade today and suddenly all the brands started rushing into my mind with the infinite options and questions one would ask themselves..which can be overwhelming. This video is such a good resource and both you guys do an outstanding job of presenting - your tone and pacing is excellent and most importantly there is no doubt that the opinions expressed come from a place of great knowledge. Well done gents (one year later..almost to the day apparently)

This last sentence of yours, “have good relationships” defined the whole video for me. So, I have to admit: I’m just sitting at breakfast watching this video not for more reason then just enjoying the two of you nerding around and having a good relationship. Thanks for that! 😅

Hi Friends, I hope you're all doing marvellously well! Special thanks again to Vintage King for letting us come by and film a video on Studio Monitors with them! In this video we get to look at the Focal SM9, Barefoot MicroMain 45 & 53 Gen 2, ATC SCM25A and the PMC twotwo. This are all relatively expensive Studio Monitors between 6-9k Powered Speakers. It gives us an insight into what many Professional Studios are choosing these days. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

Amazing comparison! Thanks, Warren especially for not falling for the Gearslutz of saying "these are the best, full stop" and gave us the different contexts each would be best at. I would really love a more home studio friendly video along the lines of this one. You know, ADAM A7X, EVE Audio SC207, Neumann KH-120, Dynaudio LYD-7, Yamaha MSP-7, that sort of stuff. I moved my surround system from a bedroom in one house, to the bedroom in a different house. Went from great sounding (8.5 out of 10) to complete crap (3 of 10). The first room was 14 x 16. Bed headboard was 2 feet from the back 14' wall. Sub under the bed. All 5 position speakers were well placed. C, FR, FL were ear level a couple feet from the tv wall. The BR, BL were on the floor in the corners on the back wall. It was creepy how much separation the backs had. Fronts were good too. Sub was near perfect. The new room is 22 × 10 and I can not perfect the speak positions. Partly because only half that space is available to be tweaked, yet the rest is fully open to the sound field. Everything I watch now I have to use subtitles. I'm tempted to remove the sub-wolfer to reduce the muddyness. But man I love that boom boom during a fight scene or an alien landing. The good news is I should be back into the first room in a year or so! My recording studio will be at least at the 8.5 level once I move back and set that room up.

Great video. As ever. I researched speakers but it was a Facebook post from Ola Englund that made me buy my set. He returned some top brand speaker and kept his Berhinger truth ribbon monitors because he could not hear enough of a difference to justify the cost. I don't judge speakers on how they sound. I pick them from the results of my fav producers mixers. His mixes transferred to a million guitarists homes with such a great great impact/clarity mix. His mixes sounded great in my car, earbuds, headphones, living room and a million other living rooms in youtube land. So I went with the (top of the line) Berhingers. They are not cheap by their standard but I'm happy with my results. Albeit I record in standard E tuning vs Ola extended low tuning ranges. He's changed speakers since but that quote always stuck with me. Here are my results (bear in mind these are p90 pickups in a standard E tuned guitar: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HQw9PoJz8sk.html

As usual, a ton of VERY interesting comments all along this video... As I'll probably buy a pair of these 4K-6K active speakers this year, this test (with the Focal SM9, which are cheaper here in France) is VERY interesting. There is a new french brand here ( called Prosodia ) which have a lot of success in a lot of high end control room ( private from local stars or in big TV )... I hope you'll have other videos like this one Warren, GREAT job !!!!!!! Paul Viguier

These are so out of my price range, but this is still fascinating. What amazes me is, that you can really hear differences, even though its through the lavalier and that handheld mic, through youtube whatever codec and compression and with speakers that only go as low as 60 something Hz (Genelec 8020).

Hi Warren! This was a great idea! Alex is a super nice guy. I actually met him a few times. Perhaps you would consider doing a video demonstrating how to properly use Mixcubes (Auratones, Avantones, Pyramids, etc.). Yes, it would probably be a bit difficult to get the gist of things through computer monitors, but in my opinion, this is an area of much confusion among mixers. Thanks! Stu

Near fields drive me crazy with speaker placement and seating. I made my own single full range driver monitors with phase plugs so they sound the same anywhere. Just a pair of Dayton rs 100 reference drivers, a bit of plywood and glue. For my live mobile thing, I modded...well heavely moddeded...lol.. some cheap Yamaha NX 50 computer speakers. I must be more used to live mixing than studio. For checking the final drums with the song, I got big old EV 1502 horns....lol. The Focal Alpha 50's wound up in my reverb chamber.

Great video Warren. Love your application specific approach to choosing a monitor. Been using the ATC 25As for a couple of years. Replaced Genelec 1031A which I love but the ATCs are really a joy day in and out. I will never forget listening to something off RU-vid through the 25As for the first time and going, "yeah, this is what a data compression audio codec sounds like...." Quite eye opening but it's surprising to see how quickly your hearing adapts to the quirks of a new speaker as RU-vid sound doesn't really bother me anymore these days. A point that wasn't brought up (understandably due to time) was that some monitors you auditioned employ DSP and have digital inputs and other don't and what this might do in terms of sound and application. Also I saw a ATC 45A in the background that wasn't part of the test. Was that considered out of the price range? It would have been interesting for you to comment on the ATC tweeter. Cheers!

Hi Stefan, I agree 100%! I have had that experience, playing RU-vid videos back can be quite soul destroying! Haha I will ask Alex about the ATC. In a side firing woofer system, you set the crossover frequency lower than you might in a typical three-way speaker, somewhere between 100 and 200 Hz, which is more like how you'd cross over a subwoofer than a woofer. At those low frequencies, the speaker is substantially omnidirectional, in that there is a small amount of directional characteristic but there is less than 3 dB (and ideally a lot less than that, although it depends on crossover frequency and becomes more omnidirectional at lower frequency) of variation between energy coming off the front of the speaker and energy that wraps around the sides of the speaker and heads toward the back. The wavelengths are so long that small obstacles such as another speaker, or even your body, produces almost no reflection because the pressure wraps around you rather than reflecting. You can be a 400lbs fat person and the wavelengths are still so long that they will wrap around your body and the person standing behind you (or behind the widest part of your mid-section) will still hear the same amount of bass. If you set up another wall, however, that would be several feet wide, and that will start to affect things. So the Barefoot design may look a little counterintuitive, but it's a concept that can work perfectly, as long as care is taken in setting the crossover frequency so it is not too high.

We have several near, 2 mid-field’s and a few far listening studio options, but have never stayed with any of the Barefoot’s we’ve eval’d. I have always found the high frequencies of the Barefoot’s shrill and fatiguing. While like the NS’s it can help reveal issues, but each of us had to take much more often breaks and Marina started to get headaches after a few hours of mastering each day. We only eval’d two of the MicroMain’s and two of the Mini’s. I hear that the Master Stack’s as mid to far-field’s do not have as much of this problem. One of our musician’s who used to engineer, is in his 60’s did not have this issue with the Barefoot’s; so, likely it is how they design and drive their HF sections. None of us had this issue with the Adam’s, Focal’s, PMC’s we use.

I suspected the ATC's would be the most accurate-sounding (based on my experience with them and the other brands - minus the Barefoots, which I've never even seen, let alone heard) and I wasn't disappointed. I was VERY close to buying a larger pair of ATC's but instead found an even nicer pair of main monitors for a fraction of the price. They were manufactured in Sydney for use by Sony Music Mastering. I own the final pair ever produced (lucky me). :-D

@MartinGod3992
@MartinGod3992 5 лет назад
just adding my 2 cents, a boundary corner in a room is actually +18dB not 9. It's 6dB per every wall pair so ceiling to floor, left to right, right to left.

I'm also curious what you think Warren about the Genelec 8351? Heard some people say they're the best monitos they ever heard (so that would beat Barefoots and Focal SM9 too), even if they're in the 6k-7k price range.

I've recently built my own active 3way roughly to KH o300 spec. It's easier to DIY a very high end speaker today than most people would assume, i may be doing a video on them if people are interested here.

Nice Collar!! ok my 80's flashback is over...@ 31:28 the ATC is $8995, at 31:53 it's $7995 maybe by the end of the video I can afford them! ATC has a distinct advantage over most other manufacturers as the make their own drivers. This allows them much more control and to be able to match their driver to a much higher standard w/o taking such a big financial hit. John Dunlavy would reject upwards of 80% of drivers because they didn't fit his requirements. The other option and less optimal is to tweak each speaker's crossover by hand individually to match a reference speaker. Either way kids, 'Don't blow a driver, you replacement won't be exactly like and sometimes not even close to what blew.' Also that midrange dome on the ATC is pretty legendary, used on the Proac Ref IV's, it's one of the best drivers ever made, ever! Okay kid's back to debauchery.

I ve learned so many Things in the past 30 Years and must say for me the best Studio Speakers are als the most musical Speakers at the same Time. Brands like Dynaudio, ADAM, Genelec, Neumann are not in my Pool anymore cause they Lack of Musicality. Depth, Seperation, Stage, Microdetails and ! Dynamic are the Points really count. For me PMC are the best Choice and i couldnt be more happy...(":

Sealed enclosures restrict the propagation of the bass wave form, so the Bearfoots would sound tighter in the bass range, because the wave form is restricted.

Fascinating stuff as always Warren, thoroughly enjoyed it. Focul SM9 seemed to be the one's you would gravitate to if you had to choose from only these monitors. Just saying that was so, what kind of monitors would you have alongside the Focul's (or your Genelecs) to give you the basic sound that many people out in the world would be listening to 'the car stereo' or phone and ear buds?

Hi bvninja, that's a tough call. Looking back on it I felt like I would want to try 3 pairs out in my room and see which ones responded best in the room. I'm in the market for a new pair of monitors as well. My list includes: Genelec 8260, Guzauski-Swist GS-3A and the Barefoot MM26. I've been saving a couple of years and working my butt off to get something that will last me for years to come. Thanks for the info and video.

"There's no perfect room. Yeah that's a good line. (I could have come up with that myself.)" haha. I got some Eve SC207s for a grand. I also have some KRK Rokit 6s, and I'm pretty balanced about how much I like them both. I think you can get so used to your own speakers that whether it be £10,000 for a pair or a few hundred for a pair they end up sounding great to you.

Hi Warren, even though most of your viewers probably won't be able to afford any of those speakers any time soon (including me), that was still a very good video with a lot of interesting points. Many thanks for making this cool comparison. The Focals are 8 grand in the US? Here in Europe they are "only" 5 grand per pair. What a huge difference. The Focals have a special feature: you can turn them into 2 way-speakers, by turning the woofer off, and so concentrate on the mid-range and the high-end, without any overwhelming low-end. Then you can switch the woofer back on, and listen to the final mix on full range. Where you able to try this out, Warren? Many thanks, David

40:30 Some inaccuracy again - passive radiators are basically like ported speaker enclosures, aka. "bass-reflex" enclosures. Only instead of the volume of the air resonating inside the port, it's virtually a dummy speaker cone (which has a mass and a certain springiness of the suspension, which gives it a certain resonant frequency). Passive radiators are used when the length and/or volume of a port inside the box is unfeasible, or would mean the enclosure ends up unreasonably large.

I just remembered - it's actually the exact same principle that tuned bass traps work on. Both those, and ported speakers are known as Helmholtz resonators. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helmholtz_resonance#Applications

Something I find really interesting - Out of probably 100 or so audio engineers I that I have worked closely with, I don't know a single one who is comfortable designing speakers. Probably 95 or those 100 seem comfortable with there own home brewed solutions to setting up a room to deal with acoustics. Acoustics are a MASSIVE part of speaker design. The two seem to be more related that people want to admit. But it seems like we're coaching people to throw bass traps in the corners and spend 7k on monitors, rather than spending even a thousand dollars on a seasoned acoustic design professional, 1k on treatment and the remaining for speakers. Whats up with that? I guess you can't sell an acoustic professional the way you can a pair of speakers, or some foam?

If there's a DSP crossover inside the barefoots, will a higher quality DA converter be more beneficial than using a mass market interface? Like Forssell DAC for monitoring vs motu analog outs(ess sabre chips).
