You can do everything in Ableton what you have done in Studio One. Drag and drops, saving clips etc, it's even possible to convey something from your previous projects with its all fx chain. And as for the mixing section, you're able to do that without dealing with popping up windows (that's what had made me switch to Ableton from FL)

You can actually get shorter notes in studio one, if you are using the pattern mode. It has a repeat feature, which let's you create trap hats and similar things very easily. Plus the pattern mode has some other useful features for beatmaking

For me the killer difference is Studio One having a piano roll that can be maximized. I'm a keyboard player. In Ableton when I record MIDI of chords and a melody simultaneously the notes look microscopic in the bottom piano roll and if I zoom in I loose track of the time placement of the different events. However if you need to jam with loops, well, Ableton is better, no question.
@FurkanTopal
@FurkanTopal Год назад
ALT + mouse scroll to give height to your notes CTRL + mouse scroll to give width to your notes ALT + CTRL to move inside the piano roll and most importantly, there's a line between piano roll and arrangement view, hover over w your mouse, click, hold and drag to the up and then you'll have a full screen piano roll in Ableton, buddy.

I have both of the free versions of Ableton Live (Lite) and Studio One 6 (Artist), which I activated when I bought their respective manufacturer's USB interfaces. I couldn't get anywhere on Ableton Live, however I'm mixing my Livestream audio very effectively on S1 with both stock and 3rd party plug-ins. Not bashing Ableton, just that Studio One is working well for me and for my current use needs.

It's kind of shocking to me that in 2022 ableton live still lacks a pop out mixer panel, or a docked mixer panel with the faders, and inserts, and sends, and channel views without the clip launcher parts wasting space. Cubase has a wonderful mixer view, as does Reaper, StudioOne, and literally every other DAW other than ableton. Even bitwig which is LIVE done better, has a decent mixer and a decent channel view.

You can have two windows of ableton with one showing the mixer and disabling the buttons you do not want taking up space. Why is the comments full of people saying Ableton can't do certain things when it can? LMAO Is this some sorta marketing plan studio one is doing with one dude making studio one bots in an effort to sell their product? I've yet to see one comment saying something factual about Ableton live.

Yep, I tried several daws, only liked Ableton but I had the lite version so I got the audiobox 96 that had a key of studio one artist included and really everything I loved about Ableton I was able to replicate in S1 it's actually easier and faster, also uses a lot less resources. Presonus offered me the pro upgrade for half price so I took it, I only spent like $300 (adding the $100 of the interface) where as with Ableton you have to pay more than double for the full version, also a lot of people probably don't need the pro version, artist has some deficiencies but not as crippling as the Ableton starter versions, and you get S1 artist for free with most Presonus hardware Also Ableton was really heavy with resources and crashed frequently because I didn't had enough ram (I have 16gb) and something I hate about S1 is that it needs full control of the audio, meaning you can't really play any audio outside S1, yes it has the option to free the audio when it's not active but It doesn't work well

What I would love to see inside S1 the most are, Stock Auto Tune plugin, pitch shifter plugin, soft clipper plugin, spectral editing, ARA 2 on the Project Page. But so far S1 is great for anything. I like grouping channels and making a global FX chain for those tracks. For instance, if I need an EQ across all my tracks, like using a high-pass filter on everything not bass related, to make room for the bass. Super quick and easy, plus it saves a lot of CPU compared to dropping an EQ on each track that needs it.

Thanks for the vid as it is always good to hear from people that are using these tools professionally. The timing is great as I'm just now debating a Sphere commitment along with V6. As a long time S1 user (since v2) I love S1 but appreciate Ableton's strengths (that I'm just learning). As a creator, I was a let down with v6 as I hoped it would add to the creation side. They seem to be moving more and more towards the studio engineer (their bread and butter as a company) and away from the creator (no innovative new instruments, effects, sequencing tools). I'm just hoping the Fender acquisition dies not accelerate this movement away from the creator. At the end of the day, no tool does everything for everyone, so I suspect S1 will live along side tools like Ableton and others that cater a bit more to the creator. Thanks again. subbed

I don't know what will be in the future, but updates and upgrades usually have a theme. There were updates that added Note FX, or a pattern editor, or other creative features. There's never a tendency in the bigger picture toward a certain group of musicians. This time the score composers were catered for, as well as mix engineers, but also performers, it's a first version after all, but during this version 6 cycle you may see features that are more in your field.

I loved the video. I'm a heavy Studio One, Live and Pro Tools user, switching between those for different stages of the production. I mainly mix and master in Studio One, Record / Edit in PT, Do production stuff in Ableton Live. I really wanted to make S1 my main DAW for everything (it has the potential for it) but it lacks a lot of things. First of all: You cannot adjust automatic fade lengths, which makes it nearly impossible to edit drums, even though, you can do Beat Detective-like editing in S1. I find it very frustrating to not being able to freeze plugins up to an insert like in Pro Tools. The automatic plugin latency compensation is very bad. When you stress your system, you can literally hear channels being processed and played back many ms-s away from each other. Also grouping tracks is a nightmare. You cannot make the global functions default (like you only want to group the record arm and editing, not the faders etc... ), you have to do it separately on every group. When you've made a group, you can't add or remove tracks from the group. Yeah S1 is going to the good direction, but still needs some development under the hood. Ableton Live needs to make no warp option selected default for recorded tracks, has to integrate ARA2 asap, need a vertical waveform zoom, and proper grouping function, because linking tracks just won't make it to editing a 16 channel drum recording. I know it's a software made for live sound and not for studio work, but since they're trying so hard to make it a full production suite, they better start developing features in it that pro tools had for more than 15 years as an industry standard recording software. In terms of CPU usage of third party plugins, I've made a stress test on different DAWs (fabfilter, waves and slate plugins with heavy usecases) just to see, how many tracks each DAW can handle without dropouts on my M2 MacBook Pro. Just for relative CPU loads: Reaper was able to handle 146 tracks, next is Ableton Live with 94 tracks, Than Studio One with 90 tracks, than supprisingly Logic Pro with 80 tracks.

@TheVidman5 Год назад
Very good points here! Were the plugins running under Rosetta or Arm native?
@skk6811
@skk6811 Год назад
@@TheVidman5 They were all running on ARM native. That's why I didn't make the test with PT, since it's not ARM native yet (even after 2 years). I think those stats will be improving soon, plugin companies are trying hard to optimise their native ARM codes even more, and FabFilter is doing a really good job with their latest updates on Apple Silicon.

I never would've guessed that in 2023 we'd still be talking about these type of issues with DAWs. I'm glad you mentioned the processing delay with Studio because I just started the 30 trial yesterday, and I'm already getting weird delays with only one or two tracks open.
@skk6811
@skk6811 Год назад
@@hirokomlm131 In my opinion Studio One will one day rule all DAWs because it is the closest thing ever to a full production suite. If they fix the performance issues and listen to the feature requests adding them to the next update immediately, fixing some annoying workflow issues, in 1 or 2 years, it will be everywhere. Until then, we're stuck with Pro Tools, Ableton, or for the patient ones, customise reaper for a specific workflow until it's usable and makes sense. I've tried this last option, but costed me 2 weeks to get is even to work the way I wanted and I was still far away from a perfect workflow. Studio One on the other hand had an almost perfect workflow, but nearly no option for customisation, especially for those little things that bugs me the most: 1: Why can't they make the file browser preview play the samples automatically? If it's open, why do the arrow keys switch to the edit page, when reaching the top / bottom of the library? Why can't you assign a shortcut to them to do anything? I find drag and drop very useful, but shortcuts are definitely the way to go, if you're on a deadline. 2: Why can't you assign the same key to do different things according to the active window? 3: It's nice that they made it possible to search for a plugin after you pressed the add insert button on a track, but how easy would it be to just search for a plugin, press enter and the plugin is on the selected track? Studio One really has to learn a lot from Live, I see top producers using it way more than it is intended for. Only because of workflow and speed.

Good stuff. I'm a Logic guy but I use Ableton for live gigs/backing tracks. Mixing 90 traditional tracks in the studio in Ableton is a horrible experience - the lack of a real mixing board is a deal killer. It's built around the concept of making music with loops, which isn't how I think. I have Studio One installed, and honestly, it's pretty good. I prefer it to Cubase. Reaper reminds me of Linux - as a computer guy, I'm strangely attracted to it... until I try to use it and remember that it comes with almost nothing and the learning curve is steep.

I get confused when people say "DAW X is good/bad for composing" because the majority of music throughout history was composed before DAWs existed. When people refer to composing in a DAW, are they talking about specific in the box genres, or are they talking about all genres from classical orchestra music to electronic dance music?
@kyfisher3662
@kyfisher3662 Год назад
@@hirokomlm131 hey mate, composing in a DAW refers to anyone who writes there music in a DAW, so genres like dubstep or trap are 100% composed in a DAW but then other genres it depends on the workflow of the musician, ill give a few examples. 1 being no composition in daw, 2 composing in daw, 3 the in-between. for a band genres band 1, they goto a rehearsal studio/garage and write the song brain storming ideas as a group or even solo and testing them out untill the songs ready. then goto a studio to record, for an example 'Dune Rats' for something modern or any band pre 2000 band 2, alot of the time have 1 guy doing most of the work of the composing but not always, he will write the songs by recording parts into his DAW and then do the brainstorming process by making changes to the song in the DAW, that being different versions of a riff, testing different beats with midi, different song structures and so on, a good band for an example would be 'periphery' and they have a video of misha doing this on youtube if you search "Misha Mansoor Song writing Masterclass", band 3, they write the song in person but then when they record they make alot of changers or experiment with strange layers, sometimes even hiring a producer to work alongside the engineer to do this. for orchestral, composer 1, writes the song on manuscript while playing his instrument of choice to test ideas and works with an orchestra and an engineer to make it come to life. composer 2, uses VSTs and MIDI, making changes based on what he hears, you can see this in videos from "Alex Moukala Tutorials" on youtube. Composer 2, will compose mostly in a music notation program, but then will either goto composer 1s method or composers 2s method mattering on his preference/budget. i hope i didn't ramble too much and hope it helps,

@@kyfisher3662 Thanks, this helps alot. I'm "old school", and I think a lot of people born after 2000 don't realize that words like "beats" and "composing" used to mean totally different things. I used to do great composing on a cheap keyboard sequencer where you could set up all the parts of your song as loops assigned to different buttons, and then you could just have fun pushing the buttons line a drum machine and making different versions of your song where maybe the chorus was 3 minutes long , maybe you put the intro at the end, the verse in the beginning, change the pitch and tempo on the fly, etc. It's was kind of like DJing your own composition. I've yet to find that kind of workflow in DAWs that cost 10x as much as that piece of junk keyboard.

You didn't get into anything you didn't like anything (real) you don't like with S1. 64th is pleanty for flams, but if you change your 1/4 note, you can easily get 128 with no issue.

I will have to agree that ableton is a bit better in terms of warp algorithm then studio one and it's stock plugins are geard towards sound design but rest, studio one is way better then ableton..

The channel editor is not cool. Not at all. It’s basically the equivalent of Cubase’s editor. I hated that. Any pop up windows are usually more annoying than anything. Better to have everything there on the main window. The windows you have to open up are irritating. But I suppose at least Studio One makes it optional, whereas in Cubase it’s necessary to control things like the inserts or volume.

@WarrenPostma
@WarrenPostma Год назад
@@ROSACEPONY Its presets are like effect chains.
@ROSACEPONY
@ROSACEPONY Год назад
@@WarrenPostma Yes it is, but sadly it allows only one preset at a time, by FX rack what i mean is more like a container where you can save for example a compressor and a reverb, then have another container with a distortion for example, and you would be able to load both container in a chain so you would get your compressor reverb and distortion. Ableton have that and it's very useful
@kiillabytez

@@ROSACEPONY Ummm...., it's called an FX bus, but being that Live doesn't have a mixer, you probably don't know what I'm talking about. Google is your friend.

Live is the only DAW I know on the planet that people refer to as ABLETON Live instead of just LIVE, so people understand what you're talking about. Nobody ever says COCKOS Reaper, PRESONUS Studio One, or PREPELLERHEAD Reason when talking about them, so I guess that's another strike against Live, isn't it?

I think the Ableton GUI layout is great - but it's just so ugly and diminishes my inspiration. A tool which is used for hours on end really needs to be a nice place to be. It's like working in an cubical office with horrible florescent lighting. The tacky ultra-flat graphics are nothing but pretentious designer BS. Studio One looks so much prettier. the GUI has subtle depth and insets, which simultaneously lowers visual noise, while keeping contrast high enough to differentiate sections. It is strange, right?... but the look of the tool really does make a difference to the creative process with audio creativity.,
@xenobiigaming

Studio One doesnt seem to hide the fact the GUI seems an awful lot like Cubase... Seems like a knockoff, and why do people insist on calling Live "Ableton"? So weird...
