For anyone wondering, Thew is correct that there was a deleted scene of Megatron in Hoover Dam. When they were first planning out the movie they planned to put Megatron in the Cybertron scene (which was going to be in the middle of the movie when that Optimus message played), and that's what this Megatron was designed for. But someone reminded them Megatron was supposed to be frozen so he was cut from that scene and the Hoover Dam scene was added. When The Last Knight deservedly flopped, Bumblebee was reworked into a reboot to get away from the stink (so it IS a separate universe no matter what Lorenzo says). The Popsicletron scene was cut, most of the Cybertron scene was moved to the beginning and Bumblebee's landing on Earth was filmed to replace the original intro, which showed him having been there since before WWII as in The Last Knight. Unfortunately it was too late to add Megatron to the Cybertron scene just for the sake of doing so.
I remember hearing about Megatron's absence being due to the fact he was frozen on Earth. As for the reboot thing, Unicron is proof that it's a reboot.
On the one hand, Bumblebee doesn't really work because of all the continuity errors it would introduce. On the other hand, so have a ton of other official things, including and especially the UK Marvel comics that were written as filler in between receiving the US comics. The way I see it, you can take it either way. The people working on the movies say they're still considering it the same continuity but they don't sweat small details. _That's pretty obvious._ I prefer to consider it a soft reboot, where the events of the other movies (except TLK) happen broadly the same way but with the timeline of events shifted around.
@@qxillanote9952 not sure what you're on about. Bumblebee was set in the 80s, and Bayverse Megatron was frozen from about the First Century CE to 2007. So if Bumblebee were in the Bayverse (it isn't, but was originally supposed to be) then Megatron is definitely still frozen.
Literally anything can be fanmoded if u bullshit hard enough The question is does it actually lock together and not explode, cause otherwise all the fanmodes are just Bold Forms Gladius w extra steps
Its sad that the concept art that this toy is supposedly based off of is much better than the toy itself. if you look at the altmode designs they look much better than what we got. So idk the point of this toy.
Kind of? He doesn't have the second cannon and Marauder Megatron was already meant to be a reference to the movies and Super Megatron. But someone managed to fumble Marauder's vehicle mode out of Concept Art Megs so it's probably at least partly intentional.
@@alphaaufa1890 Probably because they couldn't quite get it to work as well as they wanted while keeping it on budget AND having so much flexibility and articulation.
@@OtakuUnitedStudioit’s completely intentional. One of the designers confirmed the alt modes were inspired by Marauder Megatron on instagram (tho obv the toy alt modes came out much worse than the heavily marauder Megatron alt modes in the concept art)
I think the best thing to come out of this Megatron was people finding ways to make a treasure trove of fan modes out of him. Like the gun mode, the tried-and-true gerwalk mode, a jetpack for optimus, even a couple beast forms (i've seen a flamingo and a bear mode, there's definitely more though hah)
You know how a lot of 80s thrash metal bands went through their awkward groove metal period in the mid-90s? That’s kinda the equivalent of what the Studio Series line is going through right now
Even the designers reference thew. We really did just pick thew to be our king out of nowhere. But thew has all the qualities of good king: 1. He's British 2. Awesome shirt 3. ..... That's it.
FUN FACT: Thews right, the hoover dam scene did exist but was scrapped when bumblebee was changed into a reboot. ALSO, theres a reason megatrons back looks so similar to optimus, its that most of the cybertron scene characters were made from the assets of bee, optimus, blitzwing, and shattter, this is because the cybertron scene was so last minute after they mqde bee movie a reboot they had to reuse assets to make newer models to get the scene done in time for opening.
The alt modes did grow on me after a while. Especially the jet mode surprisingly enough. It gives me dystopian future oppressive government vibes, like a flying ED-209
Yeah, it's trash but I kinda love the jet mode. The cockpit does a lot of the heavy lifting. The tank is the most fan mode looking official mode I've ever seen though lol
I've legit never seen the alt modes for this megatron and I agree with you that they're fine at most. I wonder if the tank mode could've stood out more if there wasn't a jet mode? But i've never really liked megs having a jet mode anyway
The fan alt-mode "Wacky Space Blaster" is my preferred Megs alt mode for this one. That space tank and jet are, well not great. Even my kiddo was super disappointed in the alt-modes. But, it is a sweet-assed robot.
To be fair they're both PEAK. RID01 Megs can only get better by having the Galvatron version (and if you have the US version, it already is), and Cybertron Megatron does a REALLY good G1 homage with its Galvatron repaint. But I love the daft clashing colors of his regular design, with teal and orange and purple and off-white.
The tank cannon looks fantastic to me, as long as you don't rotate it more than like 90 degrees out. More of a self-propelled artillery unit vibe. And I love how the cannon elevates on its own, rather than needing to til the whole damn turret!
This guy seems to be a spiritual successor to the RID Megatron that turned into a hand and ten other things. Don't like the altmodes? Make up your own! But I'm too lazy for that and I want my altmodes to actually look like something, so I'll probably wind up passing. It's fun to see all the cool stuff other people have come up with, though.
I just got Studio Series movie 1 Megatron earlier this week, and I agree that he's a lot of fun. Since while he is s space-whatever, it is mostly movie accurate and still looks like a jet. That and his transformation is very satisfying. I LOVE the way the wings unfurl from his legs.
It feels like Hasbro designers just needed to pick an alt-mode because trying to stuff a triple-changer design into a figure that was designed from art that didn't have an alt-mode at all, really means that neither alt-mode was good.
That deleted scene you remember hearing about is in fact real Thew. In fact, when Megatron's figure was first revealed, Hasbro actually showed off that Paramount sent them the model of the frozen Megs to work the figure out from. They market Megs based on comments from Travis Knight where he *wanted* Megs to be in the Cybertron scene when BB was recut into its much looser association with the prior films, but was told to leave continuity as vague as possible.
Thanks for the honest review, Thew. If i see this guy on sale I'll think about picking it up but i dont think it justifes the $97.00 Australia price tag 😬
Thew, don't stop reviewing toys you don't like: You're still entertaining as all heck, we the fandom appreciate your work, and the crappy toys make the good toys shine brighter.
Considering that Bumblebee was originally a prequel to the Bay films and was later changed into a reboot, that frozen Megatron scene may have been in the movie only to get cut after the change from prequel to reboot.
Good to see I'm not the only one thinking he definitely turns into a Metal Slug. Which becomes a very weird shift in art style from one mode to the other... Edit: Whoa, slow burn Shamen jumpscare
Right there with you. I love the robot mode so much though. And the tank is passable, but like Soundwave, he will be in robot mode on the shelf. I hope the eventual SS 86 Megatron can get the love he deserves.
The robot mode is fantastic, and the alt modes are fine. Is it worth it? Hell yes! The few gripes I have are outweighed by how awesome the robot mode is.
The one thing I'd say about the Bumblebee Movie Concept Megatron is that you can instantly tell he's supposed to be Megatron. Putting this Megatron next to Bayverse Megatron would make someone who hasn't seen the Bay films (or Animated/Prime) think that Bayverse Megatron's alt mode was a giant angry crab. Plus the Bumblebee movie bots look great in their bot modes. Though I'll always want some BB movie repaints of the Blitzwing mold to represent Seekers since I'm not a fan of tetrajets. If I had ever found a Blitzwing or car-mode Dropkick, I'd have definitely made a dedicated display because they look good even when they have goofy alt modes.
Thew, don’t ever think that you’re not providing a worthwhile service. In this tumultuous “dumbest and getting worser” timeline we’re all stuck in, having a moment to break and watch weird dudes word about toys is seemingly the most sensical and rational things a person can do.
I felt the same way about the Shockwave figure from the same line. The alt mode is just Shockwave lying down. Love the bot mode, but there's not a lot to fiddle around with.
Someone got me this guy as a gift and I opened it with him bc I was too excited and his expression of shock at how unbelievably good this botmode is was surpassed only by mine
Honestly, the alt modes just feel like they're there for the sake of having something on the box. I've seen people having way more enjoyment making fan modes than switching to either Sky-lump or Ground-lump.
Not the first time I've heard that story about the cut scene with this design on Earth. Also I have no idea if I've ever made him a jet correctly. Neither mode was easy the first time.
Most modern Megatrons have the habit into turning into vaguely comprehensible metal pile of nothings. At least this one has somewhat comprehensible tank and jet modes.
I absolutely had this guy on pre-order untill I saw the alt modes. I feel like this is less a transforming robot and made just a super poseable figure you came make into shapes alt modes.
Just hope Thew is careful with that Energon Demolishor. I bought a second one last year and one of it elbows broke when I was taking him out of a pose in hyper mode.
I think Thew's critique is totally fair... but I kind of hope they do the exact same thing next year with Leader 86 Megatron. If he can't turn into a gun, just nail the bot mode, give him whatever nonsense alt mode doesn't add non-accurate kibble, and include a small Megatron gun for Starscream to hold, and I'll be content.
I got this guy not too long ago, and I thought the exact same thing; the robot mode is absolutely beautiful! But those alternate modes just look like cobbled together fan modes that someone made up; "Fold him up 'this way,' and he kinda looks like a tank, fold him 'this other way' and he kinda looks like a jet or spaceship." I think the "concept" was just the robot mode, and like most of the other big-name Decepticons in the movie, he was never meant to actually transform. So they just cobbled something together. At least he kinda looks like two things, versus Soundwave, who doesn't look like anything.
Thank you! Shout it from the rooftops, IT'S A TRANSFORMER! I've seen so many people praising this figure saying everyone needed to get it but the alt modes are awful and that turned me off. We already don't get many transformers with interesting gimmicks, don't take away alt modes from us as well... I'm really glad you're honest with your reviews and do what you do, keep it up sir!
I should love this figure but mine came without the cannon and with a FUBAR leg pin that stopped the tank mode from tabbing correctly, so instead I just have hatred for it.
You should try out the third party version of this by megatank which is a very similar live action inspired version of G1 Megatron but it has a proper tank mode
