Pedals, new synths, modular synths... so many things I want to get next. Give me recommendations below! ❤
@Novalarke
@Novalarke Год назад
Suggestions for synths, pedals, and modular? 1. Synths: none. Get a really great controller keyboard, something that's really good with Ableton. I have a Novation Impulse 61. It's a bit long in the tooth, but yeah - something like that. If I had to go buy one tomorrow, I'd probably stick with Novation and get 61SL MkIII. Although, the Akai MPK261 is probably also really good. 2. Pedals: I assume this is for guitar and bass. 2a: First, I'd get a better bass. A Squier P bass would be perfect for your needs. P bass is a one trick pony, but it just *sits* in a mix really nicely. Get some good strings on it, and change them at least once a year. What do I have? A 1995 Fender Jazz with DR HiBeam cylindrical core strings. (My wife bought me that for my birthday in 1995) DRs are expensive strings - $30 a set, but they last long time and are super clanky, which I like. 2b: So for Bass FX? I'd get a splitter and always record two tracks of bass simultaneously, one raw/direct, one with FX. The only bass specific FX I would get is the Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI box. This obviates the need for a bass amp. 2c: Guitar FX? A splitter, obviously, but we've got that for your bass. From there - it's really hard to say - there are strategic questions involved. Also, (apart from the laughably terrible amp sims in Ableton) virtual amps are getting SO GOOD right now, that I can't really recommend them. If I HAD to collect some pedals for my guitar (I have an 8 string Schecter Hellraiser) I would get the basics, but really GOOD basics: Volume Pedal (I've always been partial to Morley). Chorus Effect (I've used MXR mostly) Fuzz/Distortion (I have used RAT and Big Muff) Wah Wah pedal (I have preferred Cry Baby, but I also owned a Foxx Fuzz-Wah that was kind of amazing, if brittle.) Strymon TimeLine Delay pedal. - it's the best. Reverb is useful, but I find software reverbs to be much better and more convincing. Any kind of fancy weird stuff, I'd do that in the box. Frankly, I sold all my pedals and do everything in the box. Easier and cheaper. 3. Modular: Don't Do It. Seriously. Modular is for rich fetishists. Save yourself the time and money and get VCV Rack or Cardinal. VCV Rack has more gizmos you can use, but you have to pay for it to work as a VST. Otherwise, it's a standalone. Cardinal has a fraction of the gizmos, but is Free and comes as a VST. I recommend to my interested students to get Cardinal to start with. Let's say you want a miniMoog type sound - so you need 3 OSC, an LFO, a filter, and an ADSR. You could drop USD$1600 and get the Behringer System 55. Or build your own, so that's $300 for the case. $200 x 3 for the Oscillators $150 for the LFO $300 for the filter $200 for the ADSR $100 for the amp/mix out That's $1650. For just one particular configuration of a synth. Or you can get VCV Rack ($150) or Cardinal (Free) and an OSC is just a click and drag off a menu. You want 20 Oscillators? If your CPU can handle it - you're good. All for the same low price. To quote one of my fave synth artists, Tom Ellard, "YOU CAN'T HEAR WOOD".

@@brotherhorse - I second Mr Horse here. The Elgato Stream deck with OBS will open a world of fun for you. It's a right royal pain in the arse to set up, but it is amazingly useful.

A simple recommendation: notebooks in your studio & in your pocket (phone, paper) when you go out! Because the ideas catch us before we know it! Big support from Portugal, love your work LNA!

Great studio space, very aesthetically pleasing, thanks for showing us around. Synth suggestion for that space, the OG hydrasynth. Super versatile, plays nice with modular, great kb with poly AT, nice inbuilt effects and can sound v warm too. Oh and terrific for sound design.

Congratulations, you have a very cool and warm, creative space. I kind of needed to see his today so thank you for sharing. Opps, I meant to add... sequential circuits prophet x (if I were to buy a synth). Good luck!

Thanks for sharing Lna, that desk also give you good exercise LOL so that’s added health value. For synth suggestions I give a +1 for the Hydrasynth, which I think it’s one of only true creative hardware synths that has come come out in the las few years.

Have you moved house? I can rate some pedals for you: Delay… Eventide time factor or boss dd3 Drive/distortion…. Ibanez ts9 is a great pedal/fantastic tone Game Changer plasmer for higher gain distortion Boss ds1 Chorus…. Strymon Ola if budget permits or the Boss Ch-1 which is bang for buck the best Reverb….. EH Cathedral. I’ve had a ton of reverbs but this pedal gives a killer tone and is really tweakable. Wah…. Dunlop wah, it does everything you’ll need unless you’re in to thrash metal. Other notable pedals… Boss BF 3 Flanger DigiTech whammy Electro harmonix pog I’ve had all of these pedals apart from Game Changer Plasmer but I’ve used it and they’re all great pedals without blowing the bank account. Play your keyboard through the ts9 and time factor 🤯🤯🤯✌🏼❤️

Think of an album like a movie or a book. Directors and writers order their scenes and chapters in a very specific way to illuminate narrative and thematic content, and in any good film or piece of literature, each section builds off the others so that there’s a satisfying conclusion. But at the same time, it’s not something that calls attention to itself, since each part works together organically to make this seamless whole. Are album 💿 are like a movie 🍿 or book 📖 or only movie or book 📖 or both movie 🍿 🎥 and 📖?
