Hi, Could you please make a video on how easy/difficult it is to get a job in Switzerland, a post-masters in CS degree? I have heard that it is really difficult for non-EU citizens to get a job and additionally, for an international candidate, the company should win a case in court. Could you please expand on this entire process? Thanks!

I was randomly going through this video and the comments and I would like to answer this question which can help the prospective students to get a better idea. Being an alumni from ETH Zurich (MS in Computer Science) and living and working here since last 5 years I will share my thoughts (which might be objectionable from other's perspective). Regarding the job market, Let me be very honest that it has nothing to do with how talented or skilful you are or you are the topper of the university, great grades etc because everyone here is as good or even better than you if they are studying here at ETH/EPFL. I know IITB and IITR toppers who struggled finding a job here after their MS. One of the guy had AIR under 100 in JEE and I can confidently say that he is of the most genius student or person I have ever met. So the entire thing boils down to your contacts, luck and how much your company want to invest on you to hire you. Some myths are: if you have a swiss degree then it is like a cup of cake getting a job here. No it's not! It becomes easier for you to get a work permit but the first thing is to get a company in Switzerland which will hire you. Most of the companies just back off seeing the loads of work and effort they will have to put in order to hire a third national. Let me ask you a question: do you think you would like to invest like 3-4 months and ample amount of money (in order to hire a lawyer, application forms and extra documentation stuffs etc) to hire a single person when you know you can easily get someone from EU with relatively same skillset without going through all the hassle. The other guy from EU can start working from the next week, but that will not be the case for you. Your permit approval might take months being a non EU. This is the problem, if you can convince a company to hire you, you do not need to worry for a work permit provided you studied here. Big companies don't care about this hassle and the chances to get a job there might be high but again everyone wants to work in google, right? More than 90% of the jobs are not under big company names and knowing German or French might work in your favour, but no guarantees. But ultimately its never the case that it's impossible as me and many other people I know managed to find a English speaking job. It is relatively hard though. And another myth: Every country in europe has the same issue....Big Lie. In other countries it will be much easier to land to a job compared to here. So in conclusion ask yourself a question that why do you want to study in Switzerland? If your answer is to get a job after your study and to settle here permanently, then please choose another country where finding a job is easier and by that I mean a English-speaking country (US, UK, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Scandinavia etc). But if your goal is to study in the best universities of the world for around free and get the exposure you can only dream of then without a doubt you can choose any of the public universities in Switzerland. if you want to do a PhD or research or become a scientist, then I don’t think you will get a better option than here.
