Meet G. Andrés Cisneros, a UT Dallas professor with joint appointments in physics and in chemistry & biochemistry.
His research is focused on developing computational methods and applying them to study chemical and biochemical systems.
“We look at proteins that deal with how DNA gets started. We have developed code in house that allow us to do calculations that combine quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics.
“For chemical reactions of proteins and enzymes, we can’t solve the entire protein. We are talking hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of atoms. That’s so much, it’s impossible!
We need a hybrid where you use quantum mechanics for a small number of atoms and then the rest you can extrapolate and approximate.
Recently his research group found a mutation of a protein that is related to immunity, elucidated the DNA primer sequence.
This is the kind of discovery that may lead to scientists being able to predict and fix cancer mutations.
