Hello friends! This video is about all the ear-related symptoms that come along with TMJ disorders - ear pain, stuffy ears, and vertigo/dizziness. I have gotten many questions as to why these symptoms manifest and I've done my best to explain them all in this video. These symptoms are usually found in conjunction with headaches, neck pain, jaw pain, tooth pain, pain behind the eye, jaw joint noises (clicking and popping), and/or locked jaw.
At our office, we can drastically reduce ear-related symptoms within a month with orthotics & myofascial release. As always, feel free to reach out with any questions and remember... you can never have TMI about TMJ!

This channel is all about TMJ disorders - what they are, how they manifest, what to do about them and how they relate to other issues that may be going unnoticed in the body such as tongue tie, sleep apnea, ADHD, and more! I will also be posting about being a dentist and a working mommy to two wonderful children. Thank you and I hope you enjoy my videos!

I've been suffering from ETD in my left ear for 10 years now (pressure, feeling of fullness). I've also suffer from bruxism and have been a nighttime grinder for almost 25 years and where a nightguard. For my ear issue, I have been to GP's, ENT's, dentists, audiologists, chiropractors, have had multiple CT scans done. I've been put on topical (rinses, sprays, etc) and oral steroids, have had balloon dilation, and many other attempt at getting this thing under control, all with very minimal success. I've mentioned my ear issue and the connection to grinding to several dentists over the years and none think my ear issue is due to my grinding or TMJD (all have done relatively simple exams). Your videos REALLY have me second guessing their opinions now and have convinced me I really need to find someone that specialize in TMJD's in my area...

Thank you Dr. for this video, in my situation I was having a throbbing on / off pain in one ear and also felling off balance, then the pain also went to and concentrated to my jaw. So I first went to an ENT Doctor, who said I had no ear infection but felt that I did have TMJ. He also said I had impressions of the back of my teeth on my tounge. So I then went to my regular dentist who made me a night guard that was only to be worn at night. After doing some research I discovered that there is a difference between a night guard and a orthopedic device. So I then searched out and found a Dentist who specializes in TMJ disorders and he is going to do the exact procedures that you are prescribing here, it's going to be a bit expensive but I'm hopeful. A lesson learned is: Make sure your dentist specializes in TMJ.

God bless you!! I am trying to work and save for the custom made orthotics. People don't understand how it affects the ears because it isn't happening to them and mine causes the fullness which creates the dizziness/vertigo. Even when sitting I have a sense of "falling backwards" during an episode. Thank you for this info and when I can eventually afford the orthotics I hope that it does rid me of the inner ear fullness sensation that causes the dizziness. You offer me hope!!!!

I started getting a lot of severe jaw pain. I also was going through a very stressful time and realized I was clenching my teeth all the time. Praise God for this. Hi, this was very informative, thank you. I was diagnosed with TMD in 2013, but I've had my jaw popping sound for as long as I can remember. Up until a week ago, the only symptoms I've had is a kind of tiredness-pain from chewing and/or talking to much. But about a week ago I first experienced congestion in my left ear - in the same side as the misalignment of the disc -, and then less then 20 hours later I had, for the first time in my life, a sudden "attack" of vertigo that lasted around 15 hours in its most acute phase, and then slowly got better. The day after I was diagnosed with vestibular neuritis and got prescribed prednisolone. I'm still a bit shaky/unbalanced a week later. Then, a few days after, I noticed a barely noticeable, high-pitched "static" kind of tinnitus noise in the same ear. Yesterday I saw another ENT who wanted to diagnose me with Meniere's disease. Neither of the ENT doctors I met with believed it was from my TMD, even though I already had a diagnosis. It seems somewhat unlikely that I got both TMD and Maniere's disease. From my understanding ETD can give rise to - and thus explain - all of these symptoms, except the vertigo. Of course, it's impossible for you to know what the right diagnosis is, but according to you, could this be TMD causing these symptoms? Thanks.
@theTMJdoc

It is possible that these symptoms are TMD related.

@@sweatyice97 I'm so sorry to hear that. I have some fullness in both ears, maybe a 3 or 4 on a scale from 0-10, and also some intermittent tinnitus, but thankfully I can only hear it when it's quiet. Sometimes there's a bit unsteadiness and feeling of unease, but the biggest problem and source of "suffering" and distraction is the ear fullness. And worrying about another vertigo attack which will cause all other symptoms to get worse, is also a source of anxiety. But I've had these symptoms for over nine months now so I've gotten relatively used to it, so I often don't think about it. How about you, what exact symptoms du you have and how much do they affect your daily life?

Thank you for these very informative videos. About 8 weeks ago, I noticed this bothersome clicking sound whenever I swallowed. I went to a ENT as it was interfering with my sleep. He checked my ear and didn’t notice anything wrong with it. He did, however, ask if I clench my teeth at nights even though he didn’t think it’s that unusual to hear clicking sounds whenever we swallow. This won’t stop me from looking for relief as it really bothers me. I do think that certain sleeping positions at nights does make it worse the next day. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Ever since about 3 weeks ago I have had problems with opening my jaw fully and it has been extremely painful to chew/ bite down and it has gotten easier to chew but I still cant open my jaw the full way. I also have pains in the back of my neck, left ear and jaw and I feel dizzy but not like the room is spinning or my head is spinning more like I feel like I am going to fall over or like I feel imbalanced. I do wear a retainer to bed as I had braces but because of bruxism they have started to develop small holes and the plastic is waring away. My dentist said that I will get another 6 months out of them before they become unwearable but I am considering getting a mouth guard instead.

Hello! I’ve been having dizzy episodes & feeling off balance since December 2022. I finally went & saw an ENT specialist. She checked both ears & said my ears looked good & saw no fluid BUT I SOMETIMES FEEL FLUID IN BOTH OF MY EARS. Like, it’s stuck…like it wants to come out but won’t. I did an audio test & passed with flying colors. The ENT specialist looked up my nose & said that my nose was very inflamed, which can cause my Eustachian tubes to swell. So, she prescribed me prednisone. I don’t know if the prednisone is working or not…today is just Day 6 of 12. However, I’m still experiencing dizziness & imbalance. It is the absolute worse. It has caused me to have extreme anxiety & panic attacks. I’m in need of relief! I do not want to have to deal with this any longer. Anybody dealt with something similar?

I have struggled with what I believe is TMJ ear pain and popping in my left ear for years now. I have been to several ENTs who have performed many tests and even used a camera to rule out issues with my Eustachian tubes. I do believe this issue may have been caused by an increase of stress and anxiety and maybe dental work? I've been practicing TMJ exercises/massages and posture videos but have had little to no luck. Another specialist I saw recommended lifestyle changes such as less sugar in my diet, more exercise and a less sedentary lifestyle which has been hard to stay consistent with but I am trying. This issue is really affecting me every single day and even gets in the way of my favorite hobby which is music production because the issue seems to get worse with louder music / headphone use. My dentist does tell me that I grind my teeth and has provided a mouth guard. I have been told to practice these lifestyle changes and exercises and if no improvement is seen then I can go into the office and go through something called the modified Muncie technique or Endonasal Cranial Adjusting. I have even seen there are surgeries such as Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty. I am just confused because I am not sure if its an issue with my Eustachian tubes or this ligament you reference in the video. I am starting to wonder if the treatment you have mentioned is right for me. Can you provide any insight Dr. Mistry? Thank you.

Hi! I feel stuffy constantly and find myself always digging in ears to see if there’s wax or something causing this. I do find I have an increase in wax over the last year or so and sometimes get small balls of wax out. I’ve never had this problem before but notice it more when I’m suffering from painful tmj flare ups. Is this common with tmj? I’ve struggled with pain in jaw, neck and temples for many years 8+ and have found most dentist want to do braces or complete restoration instead of trying any therapies first. I have tried Botox with very little relief. Do you have a doctor recommendation for Colorado? Denver Fort Collins area?

Thank you for making this video and keeping connected with viewers!! Im 26 & About 2 years ago, I started feeling stuffiness in ears that wont go away. Ever since, its constantly stuffy in both sides - ive been to several ENTs who said nothing is wrong with my sinuses. It caused so much anxiety and worry that I started getting headaches and face/head pressure, so I went to a headache doc who took cat scans and mri and said nothing was wrong with me-gave me muscle relaxers which didnt do much for me and suggested to do physical therapy. I still feel stuffy in ears (and in mouth/ear connected area), head/face pressure, and I feel pressure in my wisdom teeth area although I had them taken out. I suspect TMJ because my jaws click and pop when opening, but no jaw pain, or any jaw soreness. Could it be TMJ related without any jaw pain? Also have been through stress little before it started and throughout until now. Thank you so much for reading and responding to comments!!!

Great videos! I've recently been diagnosed with TMJD after a visit to my Dental Hospital, who advised I stick to a soft diet for the next 8 weeks to relieve tension on the overworked muscles, while my dentist has given me a mouthpiece to wear at night which has slightly relieved my headaches since I began wearing it last week. My main area of discomfort is the stuffy ear (as well as around the eye/cheek/temple), and was wondering what the likelihood is of that to reduce or go away with these things I'm currently doing - and if there's anything more that could be recommended?

Hi Doctor. Previous to getting 5 dental implants last year i never had any facial / ear pain. I also had a sinus lift with the osteotome process for 2 upper implants. For 3 weeks after i had very bad burning inside my ear as well as cheek pain. The ear pain subsided until i has the abutments fit a few months later . Lots of stress on my jaw for 45 mins and the burning was back for a few weeks! Then once my crows were fit the burning was constantly there for months albeit much milder. The dentist removed 2 lower crowns which made the burning move from my ear to my face. Then i had a lower implant removed as i thought this was the cause but now the burning pain has never gone away! I feel all the trauma my jaw has endured had caused this . I have clicking jaw , mild tinnitus, ear pain in both ears but mainly the right, fullness in right ear, headaches , pain behind right eye , really bad neck / shoulder pain. Tmj areas are tender to touch but doesnt hurt to open my mouth. Have you seen anything before where extreme jaw strain has caused similar issues?

Can Tmj cause a patulous eustation tube? I have been diagnosed with an open Eustachian tube and also my jaw has been very sore. It could be from clenching at night bc its mostly in my lower jaw and back molars (when I wake up im not in pain, as I use my mouth it happens, can that be typical with clenching?). Hi, I’m back again. So on Friday I went to the ER and the doctor said it was ear wax in my ear and he cleaned it out but even after that it didn’t feel that much diff because of the peroxide he used in my ear and so they recommended me and ear drop to remove ear wax and that’s what I’m doing rn but while using an ear drop ur hearing isn’t suppose to be perfect right?

How can a dentist find out if a person has TMJ? I have a clogged ear fro 3 months. I did have an ear infection and that cleared but not my clogged ear. I had a decayed -# 30 molar that was infected. I had an abcess on my gum. I was on 875 mg of Amoxicillin and I just went to an oral surgeon who told me I still had the infection under the tooth. I also was given a Panoramic X-Ray from my regular dentist and he felt on the sides of my jaw and. Asked me to open and close my mouth. Is that how you examine for TMJ? I’m just trying to find answers thank you.

Hi Dr. Priya, My 15-year old son has experienced constant clogged feeling in his ears, plus clicking since last October. He visited an ENT, and had an MRI to rule out a growth. We live in Maine, the only TMJ specialist, Dr. Robert Mitchell retired, do you have a recommendation for a TMJ specialist in Boston. Thank you so very much

Thank you for your video doctor. I have had TMJ related stuffed ears for 5 months now and visited more than a couple ENTs who said my ears are normal. Due to tension on the masseter and temporalis muscles one doctor advised me to see a TMJ specialist neuromuscular dentist. I am on my second week of wearing a 24/7 orthotic deprogrammer, since my bite is misaligned. I am also doing physical therapy for TMJ and osteopathic manipulation. In your experience is it common for symptoms to fluctuate during the first few weeks before having an overall improvement, when using an orthotic? Also is it not uncommon during the first weeks to have the intraoral muscles feel more relaxed when examined by my dentist but later in the day to have the masseters and temporalis muscles feeling tight? Same applies to waking up more relaxed but stress kicking in makes my face muscles tense after a few moments. Do you think that with the aforementioned treatment I am on the right path for recovery? Thank you doctor once again.
@theTMJdoc
@theTMJdoc 2 года назад
It's hard to say if you're on the right path to recovery - has the stuffy ears sensation gone down? It is common for symptoms to fluctuate during treatment.
@dopocc
@dopocc 2 года назад
@@theTMJdoc Thank you so much for your reply doctor. The stuffy ears for the first two weeks have been fluctuating, and I feel that if my muscles were more relaxed I could open my mouth more and pop the "airplane ears" feeling, but not yet. When I really relax, they definitely feel better and when I get stressed and impatient I feel my face tight and the ears more clogged. Does this sound any similar to cases you have been treating? Is it often a gradual improvement with three weeks being what is usually needed for? Again thank you, I really appreciate your answer and all the best to you doctor!
