I know they are wasps, but I never knew they could sting because of how remarkably chill they are. Like, if I see one, I won't go out of my way to get rid of it's existence. I may remove the nest because it's placed in a horrible spot, but that's about all the bad I'll do to it.

Yeah, I've never had any real issues with mud daubers. They're pretty docile. It's the paper wasps you have to watch out for since they can been pretty aggressive. I got stung on the eyelid by one of these as a kid. I found a discarded metal office desk that had been dumped for some reason, in good condition to. I was curious if anything was inside of it...and yep! As soon as I opened a drawer one flew right at me and hit my eye. Reflex saved me and it stung my eyelid. I didn't even feel the sting itself and it took 10 seconds or so to feel any pain at all. I'm sure it only stung me because I broke its nest and it felt trapped in the drawer or something like that. I didn't stick around to investigate and only caught glimpse of it. It wasn't that a bad sting despite the location. I'd rate it lower than yellow jackets or carpenter bees, but worse than sweat bees. My eyelid was swollen for a few hours and after that initial burning subsided in a few minutes, it was more of a dull ache. I've been near tons of daubers and never been stung before that, or since. Carpenter bees are similarly non-aggressive and my sting there (or bite?) was because it got trapped in my shoe. That cause my whole foot to swell up and I couldn't wear my shoe until the next day.

They're called Daubers because their nests resemble Daub, which is a pretty ancient method of building homes out of mud and sticks. Usually seen with "wattle and daub" homes. It was used by native Americans and by the European colonists alike.

@doctaC07
@doctaC07 Месяц назад
This kind of confirms it. Lived in FL most of my life and always knew these were virtually harmless. I really think you'd have to pin one down like that to get stung. I've accidentally destroyed multiple nests before while cleaning and they just fly away. Paper wasps look similar and daubers are often confused for them, and they will sting if you bug them... although they aren't that aggressive either, compared to hornets.

These lived in our summer kitchen years ago. Very passive, non-aggressive, they tend to be solitary which causes them to naturally prefer to flee and live rather than sting and risk dying. I also believe Dauber is pronounced "Dah-ber" as opposed to "Dab-er". A Dauber is a "A crude or inartistic painter, or the implement used for daubing." I love this channel so much

Grew up around swarms of the shiny blue ones in Wisconsin, as well as some sharply colored black and yellow ones. Took a couple stings as a kid that were NOT fun, but that could either be because I was so young, or because their venom is more potent than their Costa Rican cousins. The only time I've ever been stung by a mud wasp when when I was hanging on to a railing and I didn't know that the post I was grabbing had a nest inside. My finger must have been covering up the entrance cause a wasp that was flying around gave me a quick zap on the back of the hand. I backed up and even went back to the post to investigate and I saw the wasp chilling on the post not even trying to come after me. Knew immediately that it was a slip up on my end and continued about my day. Getting stung on the back of my bony hands definitely didn't feel good but it was nothing horrible. Worst part was the itching a week later.

I live in Mississippi and we have dirt daubers (idk if it’s the same thing) but they never sting. Literally you can swat at them and mess with there nest and they never sting. Honestly I didn’t know they could even sting humans until this vid, but they are so docile that they will apparently only sting you if you force them to. Definitely not a species to worry ab.

Thank god he said the container wasn't made by the wasp cause I was sitting here in awe until he said that. My brain before- "I can't believe those wasps can create and mold plastic containers" My brain after- "I can't believe those wasps can create and mold plastic containers"

Fun fact, they hunt spiders, and they will sting them, which will cause paralysis and they will inject their bodies to feed the lavae. They can feed on the spider from the inside out.

We call those "Dirt Daubers" where I'm from. Dauber being pronounced "Dobber". My father, who was raised in the swamps and woods, used earwax to assuage the pain from wasp stings. I didn't believe it until I tried it.
