Years ago...childhood...dad's friend let me shoot his S&W Model 39. I grew up and saved my money...and one day realized I could own a S&W 39. And that's when it started... And then it was the 59's.... Seperate safes for the S&W' 9's s and 1911 45's so its still OK.... OMG the S&W 39 is perfect!

My childhood bestfriend's father owned a nickel 39-2 aswell as an nickel 66-2 that we were allowed to borrow an take out with us to the woods or wherever we felt comfortable shooting. Both of those 2 S&W's with the old rosewood & medallion grips started my obsession with vintage handguns. Still my favorite hammer fired semi is that old 9mm and that .357 mag filled the spot for fav. Wheelgun.

Thanks for sharing these wonderful guns with us. I might not be able to afford them, but I do appreciate being able to just admire them through Legacy.

1911’s mainspring housing is either flat, or arched. Guys were shooting low when not aiming, so later models were arched, and a relief was cut into the frame behind the trigger.

Great information on some classic firearms. I have a 42 Underwood M-1 and it is missing some of the stock stamps that yours has, so I suspect the stock was refinished. It does have the correct stamp inside the stock though I am at least know its and Underwood. You said your M-1 was 1943 manufactured and I was told by a so called M-1 carbine expert that from 1943 on the Underwood's had the bayonet lug. Mine carbine does not have a bayonet lug. I think the WW2 firearms all have such a unique history to them just from the manufacturing aspects of them. I mean and IBM pistol? or a carbine made by a typewriter company. The history they all had on the battlefields speaks for itself. Thank you for sharing history with us !!

Also, the small U on the magazine indicates it is a war time replacement mag made by Union Hardware. Original Underwood carbine magazines have a two letter code, like UU or UI for example. Otherwise that Underwood is a beautiful example of an as manufactured gun. 👍

Gun collecting is like coin collecting, the slightest ding or scratch can reduce prices considerably. Don't dismay, you can pick up some excellent items if you're not in to the serious minutae that causes prices to skyrocket.

Decades ago during the Golden Age of Surplus, purchasing most of these WW2 era small arms in very good or better condition was in the affordability of the common workaday man, I no longer think that is the situation, what I see now is you can purchase something that looks like it came out of Tutankhamun`s tomb for 3 times the price.
@hardluckclub7271
@hardluckclub7271 Год назад
it’s a shame and i totally agree. collectors have set these ridiculous prices and every little tweak to a gun year makes them “rare” and unobtainable to most of us. on top of spending that much, you sure as hell will never want to shoot it, and isn’t that what we are suppose to do with then😂😊
@timf2279
@timf2279 4 месяца назад
So, are the increasing prices due to inflation or limited availability? I would guess what was available in the 1960s and 70s still exists. Are people holding on to these items and not selling them, or were items destroyed creating demand.

I've wanted the James Bond gun for probably 30 or more years. I finally got one on a local auction, a dandy too. They advertised it as a 380 PPK, when I saw it for the first time, I realized it was manufactured in 1939 and a 380 from then would be very expensive. Well, It was not a 380, but rather a 32 and I got it for about $1500. It's 95% or better and I love it.

@@wildmanjeff42 Company 0149 10th Division! Don't forget the spats, white canvas spats that had to be washed & bleached white. All the old barracks are gone now. My son went to Great Mistakes in 2018 and I didn't recognize the place when I went for his graduation. All new air conditioned buildings. We were lucky to have a good breeze coming in thru the windows, I went to boot from May to July 85. I never imagined it could be so hot & humid in Illinois that time of year, being so close to Lake Michigan. I've never heard any comments about the change to the 'lightening' cut area of the front of the M1911 slide just ahead of the frame, the early (1913) M1911 shows a rather acute radius curve whereas later models feature a much gentler radius. Was this a "Colt" thing early on? The arched mainspring housing was an attempt to 'raise' the natural point of aim of the M1911 for the average shooter as part of the improvement program which resulted in the A1 model.

I need some info. I saw an Interarms PPK/s in a gun store recently. Its blued in mint condition with no signs of wear. It has the original box with 2 mags, the manual and the warrenty. It has black Walther grips and a spare set of wood checked grips withot markings. No test target. The serial number is 0101xx. No suffix. Since the serial number deems low I think its an early Interarms piece. Its marked Made in USA. No proof marks that I noticed. I would like to know the year of manufacture and a fair retail price. Thank you.
