Stunning Hike to Laguna 69 | Lima to Huaraz, Peru

Peru is a hikers dream! We flew into Lima, Peru and stayed in the coastal town of Miraflores, and then bused from Lima to Huaraz. We spent two days hiking in Huascarán National Park and stayed in an alpine hut called, “Refugio Peru" siting at 15,300 feet elevation. We hiked to Laguna 69, one of Peru's most beautiful alpine lakes.
Laguna 69 and Refugio Peru is situated in Cordillera Blanca, the world’s highest tropical mountain range. Huascarán National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site and biosphere reserve. This area is also home to the tallest mountain in Peru, and 4th tallest peak in the Western Hemisphere, Mount Huascarán sitting at 22,205 feet tall.
During this hike you are surrounded by 360 views of jagged glaciated mountain peaks. We both got mild altitude sickness, but that didn’t stop us from taking in all the beauty. We travelled to Peru in Sept and it was definitely low season in this area.

This was our first international trip in 2.5 years! We can't wait to show you the mountains of Peru. The people were so kind and welcoming. Accommodations ranged anywhere from $10 (alpine hut) to $60 USD per night (hotel). Meals were between $3 (breakfast) to $25 USD (dinner) total for both of us. It is a very affordable place to travel. I liked the travel parts. Airplane shots were cool. Hot water bottles were nice. Lima looked a little poor and polluted coming in, but nice on the ground. The food looked amazing. Lima city center yes please. I like the way you trade comments like a couple musicians jamming. Travelling in a large windowless box no bueno. Huaraz video was great. The mountains on the way to the Refugio were primo. It was pretty amazing overall is a pretty good description. Many thanks for showing it to us.

This is stunning!! I had no idea that there was this overnight version of the laguna 69 trek! What a wonderful choice over the daytrip! When did you go? The trail and the hut both look quite empty. Was the trail up to Ref. Peru easy to follow?

We really loved this area and found a lot of solitude. Tim is great at planning routes! We went in Sept 2022. The hut was very empty, only one other party staying there and a few tent campers outside. It was quite cold, so glad we didn’t go that route. We may have seen a total of 6 people until we got to laguna 69. The trail was easy to follow overall and well market, quite steep and exhausting! 😅 we used both alltrail or Gaia app map downloads to make sure we stayed on trail. There are a few trails that branch off from the trailhead 🤙🏽

What a beautiful trip. I have to agree with Helen's opinion on llamas! There is never TMI - The shirt could read "All we do is hike, eat, and poop" - I'd get it. Sounds like you need to carry some oxygen with you on hikes like this. That elevation difference sounds brutal! At you got to have a fair amount of alone time.

Thank you! The llamas made us so happy. Oh my goodness. The “poop” part on the shirt would be pretty fantastic. 😆🤣 Having a small tank of oxygen would have been nice. They do make those, but buying it in Peru would’ve likely been a scavenger hunt. It was brutal being at 10k almost the whole trip. We enjoyed the lack of people there. It was also off season, so early to mid September

My friend from Huaraz said to me that he cant use phone in public places or on streets in Lima, kind of dangerous. Btw, love from Philippines ❤🇵🇭

We did have to be careful in city center Lima. Friends told us to watch our stuff carefully and to not wear jewelry or anything fancy. We barely took out our phone and had our backpacks in front versus behind. The market was the most busy and we had to keep our eyes out on people that were definitely watching the tourist go through. Like any major city, there is crime, but just have to be aware of your surroundings and don’t be out too late in the evening/night.

Very nice video! I just love seeing footage of this wonderful national park. Me and my girlfriend will be visiting it also next july in our trip traveling the world :) Btw, maybe a bit of an unrelated question. I have bought an action camera to film our journey and am trying to get an idea for the right settings. May I ask what FPS and what shutterspeed you guys filmed in? Did you use any ND filters? It seems your footage is quite stable but also still looks smooth and natural.

Thanks so much! Congrats on your trip around the world next year. We really loved the mountains in Peru! You’re going to have an amazing experience. Let us know if you have questions on full-time travel ☺️ We just use a standard uv filter to protect the lens and the lens hood to cut down during harsh lighting. We don’t use ND filters, just when flying the drone. We shoot in 4k at 60 FPS. We use a gorilla pod to help smooth out our shots and in post production we stabilize the shots. Hope that helps!

@@HelenandTimTravel Thanks for the offer, I'll keep that in mind! Alright, so what shutterspeed are you shooting in with 60 fps? I will probably be forced to film in a shutterspeed of a 100 or 120 at minimum, in order for the footage to be stabilized. Im using an action cam (dji osmo action 3) that doesn't allow for stabilizing in post afaik, since it doesn't give access to the gyro data. Sadly this sometimes makes my 30 fps footage feel unsmooth when moving at slow speeds. At higher speeds its ok and you will start to see some motion blur. Would you have any tips on dealing with this to make it look as smooth as I can? Sorry to bother you with these questions, but I'm just looking for povs from more experienced filmers.

@Koensol we shoot in 120 fps shutter speed. We don’t do a lot of slow motion in post with our DSLR footage, but we do with our drone footage. We do most of the slow motion in post with the the ramp tool on Final Cut Pro to speed up and slow things down. We don’t have the DJI osmo action cam, but we use a gopro 10 that has pretty good stabilizer. Is there a gimbal or a mount you can use to stabilize for the DJI osmo action 3? Not a bother at all! Thanks for thinking are great filmmakers…still improving and learning everyday 😆☺️

@@HelenandTimTravel I didn't mean the actual slow motion effect, but just like when I'm walking or panning the camera, it becomes choppy to look at as the shutterspeed is like 4 times higher than the fps. The camera's stabilization is very good, but in order for the electronic stabilization to work, I can't use shutterspeeds of 60 to adhere to the 180 degree rule. It just doesn't work anymore and footage becomes unusable. So I guess another option is to also shoot in 60 fps, but the files will be huge if I shoot in that all year xD I wonder of it's possible to add motion blur effect to footage in post, as atm I don't see myself getting an expensive gimbal and most mounts still need at least 100-120 shutterspeed for it to be stabilized. Anyways, thanks a lot for the information! And your footage looks great I'd say, you should be happy with it ;)

@Koensol a lot of great technical points here on stabilization. Sure you’ll have it to play around with it in post. Let us know how that goes 🤙🏽Our primary camera SonyA7SIII has in body image stabilizer (IBS) which is helpful. We have 4 external hard drives and cloud base storage we back up to 😅 we go through a lot of footage. The key is shooting shorter clips. They are usually no more than 8 seconds long unless we are talking. We often just stick to filming static shots, so not walking with our hiking shots as much as we can. We do a lot of action using our gopro and sometimes mix in some iPhone footage too. It’s always hard to find a balance and a lot is based on weather and terrain we are hiking in too

Hi guys, Thanks for the videos it was awesome 🎉🎊👍. Q's if I may, how you managed your altitude sickness? Which medicine or any great tips that I can use?. I had bad experience went hike to annapura circuit trek at nepal and namtso lake at tibet, vertigo badly is a killer for myself. Could not be able went through above 4000m level. How many days in total you manage this hike? 2 days as per video said is good. TIA 🌹

You’re welcome! Glad you enjoyed the videos. We spent one night at the Refugio Peru and hiked to Laguna 69…so yes, two days. We took Acetazolamide (Diamox) to help prevent altitude sickness. We started taking it in Huaraz when we were doing some high altitude trekking in this area. We got there a few days prior to acclimatize. Of course please consult your doctor/physician before taking any medications just to make sure it’s safe for you to take it. You can get a prescription from your doctor if you’re in the states or over the counter when you’re in Peru.

Thanks, Fernando for watching! Great question! We ended up taking a bus operated by a local tour company. We booked our bus when we arrived in Huaraz. They seem to be everywhere right off the Main Street (by city center park) in Huaraz. Since the trailhead for Refugio Peru goes out of Laguna 69, a very popular trailhead, buses go out daily. We told the local tour company that we were spending one night there, so they noted that and told us a bus would be there to pick us the next day for the ride back to Huaraz. Just note, the drop off spot and pick up spot at the trailhead can be different, so make sure to keep that in mind. They have collectivos (local buses), but we found they don’t go to trailheads, and you still have to take a taxi. There isn’t cell service at the trailheads, so calling a taxi is a bit complicated if you need a return ride. We recommend just booking a round trip ticket with a local tour operator when you arrive to Huaraz ☺️ im sure you can you also book a bus ticket in advance online, but we didn’t plan ahead 😅

@Tophellokittylover welcome to our community. We may have said it in the video. Trying to remember, but you can book it through a tour company in cash. We remember paying less than $20 USD per permission for round trip, drop off and pick up in same location at Laguna 69 trail head

Were you able to book the Refugio before the hike?

We did not book in advance for Refugio Peru. It’s first come first served, cash only when we went a few years ago. There were at least 40 to 60 beds from what we could see and that’s not including outside tent camping for those that didn’t want to pay to stay in the Refugio.
