I seem the remember that some police stood down in Parkland. Didn't want to expose themselves to the risk. and they had guns and are or should be trained to use them. - it is always talking points, and the rightwingers cannot think. There was a mass shooting in a movie theater and one or a few in the audience had concealed weapons. The problem is that police cannot know who are the shooters and who is the good guy with a gun. Or one good guy mistakes another good guy for a terrorist. These gun owners were aware that being seen with a gun meant they could get shot at the spot. They did not use them. Police malfunctions with firearms all the time. The most benign explanation is that they are stressed out, cannot keep their cool and overreact. Or they do not hit the target. The stress must be even higher for untrained amateurs. It is more likely to have a family member killed by accident (teenagers sneaking in during night and parents mistake him or her for a home intruder) than to ever defend yourself from a _dangerous_ intruder. Most burglars run if they are detected. And the guns only help the good guys with a gun if they actively look for the shooter(s) or the shooters are close. Police work in groups they have radio, kevlar vests etc. Probably a look at the floorplan. and with luck they are well trained, and are training constantly ! And the training includes becoming more stress resistant.
