One of the last days Metal Detecting in 2023 and what an INCREDIBLE one - in fact one of the BEST EVER; an exquisite Medieval Seal Matrix and a Roman silver coin were the highlights but early medieval brooches and buckles and coins were also found - all with the XP Deus 2 Metal Detector on UK pasture!

The State do not necessarily want to own the finds but do wish to encourage finders to record finds through the PAS scheme. It is a great shame that FLO’s do not have the resources to speed up recording the and return of finds to the finder. This lack of resources will unquestionably lead to our history going unrecorded for future generations and the significance of the artefact will be lost. I, therefore, always encourage people to become “self recorders” within the PAS scheme. Another great vid ALexander - may 2024 bring you even greater success. Cheers.

Very good thoughts and insights Warren, thank you - I honestly think we should be faintly discouraged from bogging the PAS down with every cut half, musket ball and georgian buckle.... just for the time being and then when they are up to speed they can start encouraging us to bring everything again... a bog standard Edward penny is just not important enough to have be logged and data collected - but it can be once they get all our stuff back first and they have the time to deal with it! I entirely agree. I am sorry you have had poor experience with your FLO. My London FLO is rushed off his feet with Thames artefacts. It seems that like me you have enough artefacts to set up your own museum. I would love to help you archive your finds. Cheers.

Honesty, personally, i dont understand why anyone thinks the state has any right over a citizen when it comes to an artifact the citizen digs themselves.

Always had this interest in finding an historical Item & after watching Time Team I understand that the earth & structure around it all helps to put the object historical into context which is important for our history . The only example I can give is a run out on the Cotswold hills above the Stroud Valleys . Years ago my best mate bought a metal detector which we tried out on what's know locally one of the commons where cows roam in the summer . So we started in a random area just trying it out & soon we heard that familiar beep & dug into the earth find a military button , then we moved a small distance & beep again , digging just below the surface we found a number of crushed baked been cans ?? What We were finding is the detritus of the 2nd WW2 , this is where the yanks camped in what was knick named sosages a camp site holding US soldiers before DDAY . After reading about it years later it became clear this is what it was & tho my mate who kept the button , I'm sure we could of traced the army unit camped there but those two Items told me a every day story . My mother was a local lass who was picked up by an American truck & taken with other local girls to the US field Hospital in the Painswick area who held dances for the soldiers .

Merry Christmas! I hope you get to spend time with your son. My Christmas is delayed a week by my oldest coming for New years. We have Christmas and a big bonfire in the pasture. I just read that beehive thimbles like yours are from the 1300's. What a great lot of finds in that land! The Roman looks like it was dropped yesterday. Finally got some cold weather here. If you can call mid 50's cold. Should be even colder tomorrow. The chill gets you in the mood.

Love the seal matrix, what a find, we have not been lucky enough to find one yet and it is on our bucket list. The motto means that the letter is private and not to be read by anyone, "I am private" meaning the contents of the letter or message and would have been sealed over with the wax so it was visible if the seal was broken.

Your Medieval finds no longer need to be silver to 'have' to be put in front of a FLO. Not everything will be 'treasure' but best to cover your backside👍

Thanks Donna and hope all well - its all a bit grey that area and i wish they would stop insisting everything gets declared BEFORE they have a system in place to deal with what people bring them already!!!! I will be more likely to be cooperative when they tell me what has happened with the stuff they already have taken ... its about 5 years now... it needs a serious overhaul to get trust back to the system and it does annoy me they seem to be taking more on when they obviously cant deal with the situation as it stands! Hope all well!

Another bloody brilliant vid, wish I could get some good land to detect as an archiolagist it's still difficult so only really get to dig on our digs in europe and got no problem with people finding history, and the main history is well beyond a metal detector depth.

I do enjoy watching you, seeing the things that you find, and hearing about the history of the pieces. At the same time, I find it extremely ironic how you bear distain for the Portable Antiquity Scheme, yet you use them as a resource in your research. Yet if people didn't do what they're supposed to and turn things in to the Portable Antiquity Scheme there wouldn't be anything there for you to research...

I agree Micah but perhaps I am allowed to use their site while they contemplate the whereabouts of the two silver items they have which I found one of which I think was quite a rare viking silver brooch... they shouldn't try and undertake such a task, encouraging everyone to declare every last hammered coin and spindle whorl if they cannot deal with what comes in and either lose or steal some of it to boot....

Merry Christmas and Happy New year's, I don't know if you recall I told you I'd been off the drink for 28 days? Well you were right after the second month I lost count of weeks but it's well over 4 months sober, I had a little glass of port Xmas day but I'm not interested in it at all now 😂 well pleased I've surpassed my 3 month goal and now I'm saving Money I don't see the point in drinking again. Excellent content as always and I've saved about £150 towards a metal detector, everyone I ask says you'll get a good one at around the £250 mark so not far to go

Robbie well done Mate i was really pleased to hear that ... and if you can handle a little glass of port then thats brilliant - i always have a swig of red wine if someone opens a good bottle as i want to know what it tastes like! I am fortunate it doesn't make me want more... sometimes immediately but certainly not a day or two after - I really don't think about it now and I honestly save thousands of pounds a year!!! Keep it up! And 250 - 300 about right for a first detector definitely - I have a video about it its on a playlist on the homepage!

@@HolzHammerSagas thanks dude that means alot cuz if I'm honest I've been not getting invited anywhere these days but it's cuz I don't go to the pub but I know theirs good communities in this type of thing mudlarking and detecting so I want to fill 2024 with loads of positive stuff, I already started as I make things with matches also make fishing rigs in advisory always a good way to pass Time I love fishing and theirs a club that teaches people to fish which I offered to volunteer helping beginners next year so all positive and I'll check out the vid on home page

Hi Alex, watched this on day of release but only found time to comment now, another excellent video and thanks for some Boxing Day entertainment. That site has a look about it, that I can't explain, dont know if it's the little stone bothy or what it is, but it looks full of Eastern promise. Dont want to sound like a know it all but I find a huge amount of ring brooches way up here in the Highlands, they were a thing up here, right up to at least the mid 18th century, finally losing popularity and culminating in those huge Highland plaid brooches. I can identify the early examples by size and design. One thing I do know is that my ring brooch finds outnumber my annular buckle finds by by about 50/1. If my understanding is correct your large example is a ring or anular buckle not a brooch. The round section of the ring is not exclusive to anular buckles, although most are flat section I do have one or two ring brooches with a round section frames, but the real giveaway that it is a buckle is the absence of a cutout or recess in the frame where the pin would sit in situ and rotate, on a ring buckle the pin will move all the way around the frame. Hope this helps with an the ID. I have not been able to get ou for over 4 weeks due to terrible weather conditions on all my days off, so thanks for keeping me sane.
